Secluded single family home on 40 heavily wooded acres...yet only 10-min from the scenic North Shore and only 20-min to downtown Duluth! The starry nights are spectacular away from the city lights and the sights & sounds of wildlife are everywhere.
Our single level 30' x 40' guest home (built in '06) has an open floor plan. The great room measures 18' x 30' and has a spacious kitchen and dining area on one side with the living room/TV viewing area on the other. The two bedrooms are located at the front of the house...one has a queen bed and the other a double with the latter room also having a loft directly overhead... which is ideal for two children... sleeping bags required. The back of the house has a fairly large bathroom which doubles as the utility room. The washer and dryer are located here, which guests are welcome to use.
A fully functional wood burning stove is centrally located in the great room. Guests are welcome to use it...my wife & I heated this home for 6-years almost exclusively with wood. Firewood is provided at no charge. As a back-up, there are individual electric wall heaters in each room.
Interaction with Guests
My wife & I are in the midst of finishing our retirement home which is located in the middle of our 40-acres, so we are only a 5-minute walk up the driveway should guests have questions or need our assistance in anyway.
Breathtaking views along the shore of Lake Superior are just 10-minutes away! Stroll along the beach or bike, roller blade, jog or walk along dedicated paved pathways. The Lakeside residential community is only 5-minutes further where you’ll find an awesome city park, 27 hole golf course, craft shops, bakery, grocery store, gas stations as well as a convenient place to pick up subs, pizzas, etc.
Closer to home, guests are welcome to hike along the walking trails that we've cleared on our private 40-acres or, crossover onto 100’s of acres of adjoining State property to explore even more! Wild raspberries are often plentiful along the trails in late July/early August and wild hazelnuts are ready for picking in August….provided you get to them before the squirrels and deer do! The north side of our property is peppered with numerous Maples so during Sept/Oct, a walk through the woods becomes exceptionally brilliant with all of the Fall colors!
Guests are also encouraged to simply sit back, relax and enjoy the campfire area. (Campfire wood is provided at no charge.) I personally never get tired of listening to the sounds of the night accompanied by a spectacular star lit sky… all from a front row seat in this country setting!
While a bike ride to Lake Superior is not out of the question...particularly since it is mostly downhill, the return trip could be a real bear! We're in the country, so personal transportation is necessary!
This was our second stay at this beautiful peaceful setting. It is so nice to have a quiet place to retreat too after doing the tourist stops. Wish we had more time to enjoy the property but we were trying to pack a lot in for a short stay. I would certainly recommend touring at a more leisurely pace and making time to hang out at this "home away from home".
Our stay was terrific! The place is quiet, peaceful, well-equipped/stocked and organized - everything we needed or wanted was right at our fingertips. We like to run and go during the day and then come back for supper and to relax in the evening, and this was a perfect place for that. Arrangements were simple and easy, and Royal's communication was great - he anticipated most of my questions before I thought to ask them. We hope to come back for another stay - a GREAT place on the beautiful North Shore of Lake Superior!
We really enjoyed our stay at Royal's property. It is close to Duluth as well as to Two Harbors, so if you enjoy watching the a Great Lakes freighters, as we do, this is a perfect location. The cottage has every convenience anyone could need, plenty of room, and beautiful surroundings. It is spotlessly clean, too. We didn't have time to use the fire pit or the newly-added glassed/screened in "outdoor room," but those are certainly nice features. The property exceeded our expectations, and we thought it was a great value.
Very nice property, only reason gave 4/5 is it's a little drive into Duluth.
Beautiful and roomy, we felt right at home. Perfect location to stay if you want to enjoy all the sights and sounds of the Duluth area but want a quiet north woodsy place to stay. You will not be disappointed.
From the minute we booked until we left we had a great experience. Royal sent us instructions for getting to the residence and how to get to the house shortly after booking. The directions were easy to follow. Once we arrived everything was perfect. We had everything we needed from the towels, to the bedding, the VCR (and a great selection of movies) and even comfortable blankets in the living room. It is a bit out of town but we didn't mind the drive as we packed a lunch and ate it while touring around the surrounding area and then came back to freshen up before going back for a nice supper. Would highly recommend staying. We had children ranging in ages of 13-19. They enjoyed it as well.
