Overview

About the property

A comfortable lower floor suite, part of a magnificant estate home

Chimera is something so fabulous it cant really exist. But it does here in Victoria. A quiet retreat from the pressures of life, a place to be close to nature, tranquil and unhurried , it is situated on a point of land reaching out into Esquimalt harbour on an estate that has to be seen to be believed. Nestled off a spacious deck at the waters edge is a 2 bedroom suite with private entrance . The suite is the lower floor of a large house and is a walk out suite with lots of windows and natural light. The owners live upstairs. The newly renovated kitchen provides everything you need to enjoy local produce and the comfortable light and spacious living/dining makes life easy. The bedrooms are provided with fine linen and plenty of storage and offer one queen sized bed in bedroom 1 and a queen sized bed and one twin bed in bedroom 2. The sofa opens out to provide more sleeping accommodation with a large queen sized bed. The 2 bathrooms (one ensuite the other a 2 way bathroom offering ensuite from Bedroom 2) are well appointed with luxury soaps and supplies, shower, vanity and toilet. There is an in suite laundry with washer and dryer.

The large deck reaches out from the suite to the water and provides a wonderful place to sit and soak up the sun. There is a barbeque and dining facilities on the deck. To one side is our 84 ft private dock so if you want to arrive by boat ask us about moorage or bring your kayaks ( or use our 2 sit upon kayaks or large inflatable boat- life jackets provided) and use the dock to launch and explore the waters around Cole Island, a 1857 Royal Navy building, originally for storing ammunition. The soft pink bricks of the old building glow in the sun and provide many photo opportunities.

Enjoy the local wildlife, magnificent blue herons, mink, otters, seals, swans, geese and eagles. Go crab fishing off the dock. On the other side of the property is Tovey Cove a small secluded beach with a access a few minutes walk away. The shallow water means that it warms quickly. Esquimalt Harbour is a busy working harbour and there is always something to see, with boats going in and out , canoes, kayaks, paddleboarders, divers and fishermen.

View Royal is a small community within 15 minutes of downtown and has a large supermarket, medical facilities, liquor stores and restaurants. Victoria General Hospital is a few minutes away. The Galloping Goose is a wonderful bike and hiking trail which goes from downtown Victoria , through View Royal and onto Metchosin, and Sooke . It is 60 kms long and you can get onto it within about 2 kms from the house. Bring your bikes. Thetis Lake is a wonderful hiking trail and great place for a walk It is only 1.5 kms away.

About Jean McKay

Jean McKay has lived in Victoria for 20 years after spending time in UK and Australia. After traveling the world and seeing many wonderful places she chose to make Victoria her home.

Jean McKay purchased this apartment in 2009

Why Jean McKay chose Victoria

Jean fell in love with the property the moment she first set foot on it almost 10 years ago. Over the past 8 years she has completely rebuilt and renovated the old house . Jean feels that she has a responsibility to take care of and protect the grounds with their old stately arbutus trees for future generations. She is privileged to get to live here but never takes it for granted.

What makes this apartment unique

Sitting on the porch, gazing through the graceful twisted trunks of aged arbutus trees, watching the sparkling water and the light shining in from all sides. Watch to see how many seal creatures and birds you can spot. Did you see the seals, otters, mink, raccoons, blue heron, eagles ? Enjoy the spectacular gardens and views showcasing the Olympic Mountains and breathing in all that fabulous fresh air bring a sense of peace and oneness with the natural world. Come here for a holiday and find a world you may have forgotten still exists.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Hi Jean

I want to thank you for the hospitality that you gave us over the five day stay at your apartment. The whole vacation was a wonderful experience and Shirley and I will be looking forward to repeating it in the future.

Your apartment was just like home and provided us with everything that one could hope for. It is spacious and even when all six of us (including two five-year-olds) were there, the place provided ample space for everyone. The grounds are beautiful and the deck was the place to be in the warm afternoon sun. The location is also excellent — very close to grocery and other shopping as well as being very close to Hwy 1.

I highly recommend you place to anyone who wants peace and quiet, great accommodation, and a wonderful environment.

With thanks

Wonderful

  • 5 of 5

This is one of the most beautiful places I have stayed and I travel quite a bit. Jean is a wonderful and kind person, extremely helpful if you need it, although you really want for nothing, everything you need is provided, the property is neat and clean as a pin, beds comfortable, lots of space, soft towels, warm and cozy. I will be visiting again in June and staying here, highly recommend!

  • 5 of 5

Our family was lucky enough to find this amazing home. Jean is a gracious host who shares not only her beautiful outdoor spaces but her favourite local spots.

The suite is stocked with everything you need to make you comfortable and feel at home.

This one will not disappoint.

Great property! Amazing view!

  • 5 of 5

We recently stayed at the property with out-of-province guests and couldn’t have found better accommodation. It suited our party of six perfectly. The pictures do not do justice to how well the suite is organized and decorated. Would return in an heartbeat!

The city is situated on the Juan de Fuca Strait and faces the Olympic Mountains in Washington State providing beautiful ocean and stunning mountain views. Victoria has a temperate climate of mild year-round temperatures which provides the perfect environment for the green lush gardens you will find here. Of course you will want to visit the world famous Butchart Gardens and enjoy the fine dining, fireworks and other events that are staged here. Check out their website to see what is on. Victoria's old world charm and European flair, means that there are excellent services , including some of the best dining in Canada, both modern and old world pubs, world renowned afternoon teas, excellent indoor and outdoor shopping, and a host of fresh-air activities. A few minutes away you can join the Trans Canada Highway to travel “upisland” and experience the spectacular views as you cross the Malahat, experience the extensive rural areas of Shawnigan Lake and Cowichan Valley , stopping to buy local produce, cheeses, at farm doors or stop for lunch at the many restaurants serving local products. Don’t miss Merridale Cider Farm and you have to try the local wine, which is winning all sorts of awards.

Further upisland is the fascinating City of Totem Poles- Duncan. Don’t miss the Native Culture Centre and the BC Forest museum. Chemanus, with its murals, restaurants , antique stores and fantastic theatre complex offering the best of live performance and food is well worth the easy drive. Victoria itself offers parks, beaches, the trees and gardens, excellent museums, a fascinating history, and activities for all the family.

. Vancouver Island is a very large island with more than 1 million people in total and an area of 32,134 km2. Most of the Island is made up of spectacular wild areas where bear, cougar, eagle and salmon make their home. Wilderness, hiking trails, wild life viewing, fresh air and room to breath.
