About Dorothy Gehgan-heim

I am retired from stage and television as an actress and worked for over 20 yrs as an interior designer. I have lived in many parts of US. I have lived here on the Key Peninsula since 2003. The barn and guest cabin living quarters was built in 2008. We wanted family and friends to have a special place to stay right here.

Dorothy Gehgan-heim purchased this cabin in 2003

Why Dorothy Gehgan-heim chose Puget Sound

We moved from a beautiful waterfront home located on the Lynnhaven River and Chesapeake Bay in Virginia. We wanted to be on water again with views of the mountains and Puget Sound. This property had all we were hoping to get with wonderful NW woods as well. Close enough to three cities, Seattle, Olympia and Tacoma, yet out of the crowd for peace and relaxation. Gig Harbor is a beautiful town and has all we need just 20 minutes away. Key Center has enough to fill in the basics only 11 minutes away.We still have easy access to three cities by car or ferry and the Sea/Tac airport for any longer distance travel.

What makes this cabin unique

The world is a hectic and stressful place for many people much of the time. We have a spot that offers a real get away to no stress for total relaxation in a beautiful natural setting. Just relax and take in nature at it's best here in Western WA. The true Pacific NW of old growth forests, water and mountain views. Magnificent sunrises and golden sunsets. There are many ways to enjoy the life here on the South Sound. There are long stretches of beaches to explore and National and State Parks to enjoy. You can do many activities outdoors and explore small towns around the Sound, take a ferry to several different Islands and Canada. Within a two hr. drive you can be at the Pacific beaches. Visit Mt. Rainier NP or Olympic NP, Hoh Rain Forest, Crescent Lake, the San Juan Islands or Cape Flattery. We are very close to Hood Canal, Harstene Is. and several local wineries. The Glass Museum in Tacoma with the Dale Chihully bridge is special, a must do where you can actually watch works of glass art being made. Point Defiance offers a wonderful Zoo and dining at Anthony's. Gig Harbor is our little gem of a town.

If not day tripping, the very best is to stay put right here and enjoy all the relaxation and beautiful location, maybe go kayaking, or for a walk or bike ride. After a lovely day fall asleep to the sounds of nature.

Private and Peaceful

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful place to spend a quick getaway with family. We felt comfortable and welcome perched in the spacious Camp Blackbeary. Dorothy was a delightful hostess, offering anything we might need, from children's books (for the 3 year old) to ideas for the best beaches. Thank you.

The cabin had everything. Most of all peace and quiet!

  • 5 of 5

The cabin is in a quiet corner of the Key Peninsula. My daughter's and I went there to unwind and refresh in a distraction free environment. Set in the middle of a wooded area it was easy to think you were all alone in the wilderness... But you're not. Dorothy, the proprietor, lives in the home just down the hill and she is very gracious.

Besides all of the kitchen stuff inside, there is a small gas grill outside with gas provided. We used it alot. There are a variety of coffee makers, small electric, a French press...leave the k-cups at home unless you bring your own maker. There's virtually no phone network data connection so don't stay there with any intention of getting business done... Which was great because my kids had to put the phones down and just visit. We are already looking at the calendar for a good time to go back.

Owner's Response: Thanks Travis, I look forward to you coming again. Glad you enjoyed the peaceful location. One can get cell service and if you bring your own wifi jet pack you get internet here. I don't have it as most guests want to get away for a few days and relax. Dorothy

Cozy hideaway for family bonding and fun!

  • 5 of 5

Tucked away high in the trees, all cozy warm, this cabin provided our family the perfect Thanksgiving weekend retreat. We spent hours playing games and puzzles next to the fire, we cooked together in the charming kitchen, we hiked down to the beach combing the rocks for shells and treasures and enjoyed the lush green forest just outside our window. It's the perfect perch for bird watching with binoculars, while staying warm and dry. Spectacular views of Mount Rainier towering above the waterways and docks was truly picturesque! We adventured to the nearby State Parks to hike and beach-comb. We spent time in Gig Harbor browsing art galleries, shops and even took in a musical theater performance at the Paradise Theater! Caught a yummy meal at Lulu's Home Port Restaurant only a few miles away. The host of our cabin was so wonderful and accommodating, bringing us extra hot chocolate and popcorn. We listened to old records on a real record player (first time for the kids!!) and had plenty of books and magazine to flip through for those idle moments so rare in our lives now-a-days. The fact that the cabin does not have internet or TV really gave us all some quality uninterrupted time to re-ignite our chatter and laughter, and even the sacred quiet time of just being together, each with a book in hand. The completely open space of the cabin was a wonderful atmosphere, making us feel connected and close at all times, while the atrium style high ceiling and large windows gave us a sense of abundant space and connection to nature. We realized how different it felt than having separated rooms that cut off the flow of energy and conversation. The kids loved it and said as we drove away that their favorite part of the holiday was just spending time playing and giggling together. The cabin was clean and decorated in such a way that we felt instantly at home. We loved every minute of our time here and can't wait to plan another vacation at the Blackbeary Cabin again! I highly recommend it to anyone looking to find a little peaceful hideaway for your next vacation, alone or with family!

Owner's Response: Nicole La Fleur and family, were the best guests. A lovely family including Pepper their sweet dog. I'm so pleased to have guests who appreciate the nice simple life in my cabin. It is a stress free place with peace and relaxation in mind. The nature and the beauty of the North West woods near the water is what is special here. It's a retreat. The La Fleur Family got it! They enjoyed it and I hope to have them come back again. They had plenty of places to go, and things to see and do. Both daughters were able to enjoy their special interests in theater and photography. It was so nice to learn about their talents in these areas and see them enjoying it here in our region. It was a win, win for us all! Thank you for your lovely notes with art work, girls. Please come again. Best wishes to you all. Dorothy

Uptown Gig Harbor with it's new malls has more restaurants and shops and Galaxy movie theater.

The historic downtown Gig Harbor on the waterfront has specialty shops and festivals, with weekly summer events in Skanskie Park along the harbor. Several galleries, museums, and wonderful restaurants like Tides, Anthony's, The Green Turtle, Brix 25, Kelly's and El Publito. There are kayaking and boat rentals to tour the harbor.

This historic fishing villiage offers many wonderful ammenities and is a very picturesque place. It has one of the best photo views of Mt. Rainier and the Harbor.

The Longbranch Wharf is the very best photo view of Mt. Rainier and the Sound just a few minutes walk from our Cabin on Filucy Bay.
