|Minimum Stay||5 - 7 nights|
House with shady garden and large sunny terrace overlooking the sea in the old town of Ventimiglia which is across the river from the main town, a short walk to beaches, shops and restaurants. The house has gas central heating. The garden has a large table and chairs and is ideal for dining; it is sheltered behind high walls with a canopy of bougainvillea growing over it. The terrace also has a table, chairs, sunbeds, an umbrella and has spectacular sea views.
Ventimiglia is famous for its huge Friday market but nearby are the Alpes Maritime for hiking and cycling or Monaco and the Cote d'Azur for glamour and sophistication as well as San Remo in the other direction. Shopping opportunities are endless. The ski resort at Limone is 1 hour's distance by train or car in the mountains of Piemonte.
Ventimiglia Alta is an old town which still has a thriving local community. There is an 11th Century cathedral, 4 other historic churches and many other fascinating old buildings.
Utilities & final cleaning: The house is so near the sea that you can hear the waves even in the winter from inside with the windows closed. You can get down to the nearest beaches on foot in 5 minutes. These are pebble beaches but around the headland there is a sandy beach that is only accessible on foot or by boat though even at this beach there is a restaurant and sunbed hire. It is also especially popular with surfers and is very safe for children as it stays shallow a long way.
Gas and electricity costs are not included in the rent as these are charged at a higher tariff for 2nd home owners in Italy and are significantly more expensive than these cost in the UK. Although during the summer months this is unlikely to cost a great deal, during the winter with the central heating on it could add an extra £30-£40 (approx) per week.
There is a charge for a final clean of the house at the end of the stay at 14 euros per hour. Average time taken is 2-3 hours but obviously everyone is different.
Deposit: There is a returnable deposit for the keys and against damage of between £100 to £250 depending on number and ages of guests to be paid in advance.
I am a retired recruitment consultant and I live in London but spend as much time as possible in Ventimiglia.
Linda Thompson purchased this house in 1989
It's a house with a lovely shady courtyard garden and a large sunny terrace. It also has lovely sea views from the terrace and through the decorative garden gate. It is also very secure being hidden behind high walls.
The house is situated in the mediaeval part of Ventimiglia which has a wealth of historic buildings and a relaxed Italian lifestyle.
We spent fourteen days on the French and Italian Riviera, starting in Nice and finishing in Florence – three adults and two children. We stayed in three apartments and this one outshone the others by far. The apartment is beautiful with magnificent views over the Mediterranean. The courtyard in particular is stunning. The Bougainvillea was in full bloom and it was the perfect haven away from the hot afternoon sun. Ventimiglia Alta offers a truly authentic Italian experience. There were bakeries, supermarkets, cafes and bars all walking distance. We were also lucky enough to experience a parade celebrating the town’s medieval history. I hesitate to leave this review because it will inevitably make it more difficult for us to book again. However, I would thoroughly recommend it for families and others.
Forgot to add that the photos here don't do the house justice. It's 100x more beautiful in real life. Maybe the photos need to be updated although looking at the availability, maybe they don't need to?!
Ignore the one negative review left below. Those guests should have done some research before they decided to book in Ventimiglia, perhaps they should've gone to Benidorm instead. However, if you want something more interesting and infinitely more beautiful then go here.
We absolutely fell in love with not only Ventimiglia, but the house itself. When we arrived we were greeted with a stunning courtyard that provided a bit of shade from the blazing midday sun. The house was really clean and was stocked with plenty of clean linen and tonnes of space. The bedrooms were absolutely lovely with stunning furniture and charm. Upstairs (outside) was another terrace, perfect for sitting out on in the cooler evenings.
Yes, the house is quite high up, and you do need reasonably 'good legs' to walk up and down to the beach/town (20 mins), but the medieval alleyways and shops etc. made it all so worthwhile, especially during the evenings when they're all lit up (very special). Being up quite high does provide you with some stunning views out to sea and, to the right, Monaco etc. which are absolutely stunning, providing a really nice warm breeze.
There is a small amount of graffiti, but that's to be expected and certainly doesn't detract from the beauty of the place. Some dog owners do tend to leave their dog's mess on the pavements, but in the grand scheme of things, is a really minor drawback. This is a place where real people live in real homes, it's not a holiday resort.
There are a few excellent local shops, where you can buy all your basics and some YUMMY food (try the torta verdi and pizzas). The lady in the local mini supermarket is lovely, even if you don't speak Italian, so I don't know what those people were talking about. Some excellent and cheap restaurants within walking distance too.
There's so much to say but not enough space here! I will say that we'll definitely be going back again sometime. It would be really useful if there was a visitors book so that guests could share thoughts and ideas of things to do etc. but apart from that, everything was perfect and we didn't want to come home.
We had a wonderful week in Ventimiglia staying in this beautiful house. We found the local people lovely and very friendly - our 4 year old especially was adored so much so, she was amazed on a trip to Monaco that no-one was calling her "bella". The old town is wonderful full of hidden gems and well worth a walk round. We loved the new town too - great shops, lovely cafe bars and a fantastic restaurant in Geppy's Wine. The covered market was a fantastic experience with great local produce. The Friday street market was full of bustle and life. Although we did travel out and about the children soon voted that their favourite time was down at the beach - swimming in the sea, which we did every day under Margunaira - also our favourite place for an evening meal or a prosecco out on their deck followed by our sea front walk and final stop at Bagni for ice cream. Ventimiglia offers so much for a fantastic family holiday it was hard to drag ourselves away but we did manage Monaco, Nice and Noli (another gem further into Italy). We hired a car but actually found we could have managed without as the travel links were so good. The house was lovely, very well equiped and the covered terrace was great for cooling down and al fresco breakfasts. Ventimiglia was not as polished as some of the resorts around it but we loved it the more for that - it was authentic true to itself and had some of the loveliest friendliest people you could ever wish to meet and we speak no Italian. We fell totally in love and can't wait to go back again.
We had a great holiday week in this house in Ventimiglia. The house is clean, spatious and very well equipped. We especially liked the two terraces: One below, where you can find shelter for the hot afternoon sun under a marvellous bougainville; and the upper one, ideal for breakfast and dinner. Another special feature are some beautiful authentic pieces of furniture, especially the cupboards in the sleeping room.
Old Ventimglia is very special and very nearby. Do not expect a Disneyland version of a mediaval city: The houses do not look like they have been painted yesterday. But, this gives the city a very authentic look-and-feel, a real city where real people live. We delighted to explore the old town and to find each day new parts and little alleys. Also, very practical is that two supermarkets, a baker, two nice restaurants are very nearby. All populated with very friendly and helpful people.
The beach is close (though you have to climb up and down somewhat), not crowded, and clean. We came by car to Ventimiglia (for which we found parking space without a problem), but liked that we did not need it during the week. We made trips to the Hanbury park by bus, and to Sanremo and Monaco by train. And all this made our stay here a great mix of relaxation on the beach and under the bougainville, and nice visits to a variety of places. Recommended!
I have just returnd from a holiday at the above named address and very satisfied I am. Well equiped with both linen and kitchen ware but we did`nt use the latter as two minutes round the corner we could purchase just about all we needed, take-away,deli,groceries and fruit and wine. At the top of this street, Via Garibaldi, two minutes the other way are two good restaurants. We had a car and were very surprised to find no problems at all with parking. Of course the beach is at hand and was enjoyed immensly, and quite alot of sight-seeing within short walking distances.Ventimiglia is something special and quite a lot of pleasure can be had just wandering around the narrow streets. I would like to note that the photographs of the house, in my opinion, do not do it justice. It is good practicle and comfortable home .
Ventimiglia Alta is a mediaeval town across the river from the main town of Ventimiglia (about 5/10 minutes walk away) Behind it are the Alpes Maritime and directly in front is the Mediteranean. The French border and Menton is 6km away and in the other direction are Bordighera and San Remo. Nice is a 40 minute drive by autoroute and Monaco is about 20 minutes away. The world famous Hanbury Gardens are also a short drive or bus ride. Transport facilities from Ventimiglia are excellent by bus or train so a car is not necessary.
