Approximately twenty five years prior to the French and Indian War, The McDowell Family settled in the beautiful Cumberland Valley and farmed land at the foot of Parnell’s Knob for several hundred years. This 19th century farm house is located on land that has been in the McDowell family since the 1700′s. The farm is still in the McDowell name with the eighth and ninth generations of the family involved with ownership. It is still a working farm with cattle housed in the barn and crop lands and pasture being utilized.
Our family loves to visit this amazing house on its beautiful property, and we would love to share our great experiences with you.
Joe McDowell purchased this farmhouse in 1830
In 2012 we began renovations to Parnell Springs to provide a unique guest house rental on the historic property with modern amenities. Originally there were five bedrooms on the second floor of the house. We converted this area into four bedrooms, including a hallway and two bathrooms. Downstairs, the guest front door was removed and an additional window was installed in it’s place. The down stairs will feature a modern kitchen, living room/dining area, parlor, and study. Future plans call for the old kitchen to be converted into a sunroom. There is a second story porch as well as three porches on the first floor from which to enjoy views of Mount Parnell and the beautiful countryside in our unique Cumberland Valley.
The brick section seen in the middle of the house is as the original house was built in 1870 right after the Civil War. The house had two front doors, which was the tradition of the time; the one on the left was for the family and the one on the right was specifically for guests entering the living room. The right door has been replaced with a window. A spring located in the basement provided the water supply and necessary cooling for the milk harvested on the farm.
Near the beginning of the 20th century the family added a two story section to the north and south sides of the house. The new section on the north included two rooms downstairs, one of which was a formal parlor. A twisting stairwell leads up to two more bedrooms on the second floor. The one story addition on the south side of the house contained a kitchen and bathroom, and a concrete cistern was installed above the bathroom to provide running water.
From our farmhouse guestbook:
Thanks so much for the great home. Everybody loved it. There was a lot of room in the house and the yard outside was nice and big. We really enjoyed seeing the cows and playing the great games here. Thanks you very much.
I almost don't want to write a good review because I want to keep this place to myself. Such a beautiful home on a gorgeous piece of property all which were extremely well-equipped. Only about 8 minutes to Mercersburg Academy. We were just there for a weekend visit but could have comfortably stayed much longer. There were a couple of housekeeping glitches but the property owner was very quick to respond and his wife even baked us some fresh muffins for our inconvenience. The home is on a farm with a small herd of cows which were quite friendly and very fun to watch and talk to. We definitely plan to visit again!
I was delighted to find this alternative to other places we'd stayed in the area when visiting Cowan's Gap State Park. Our family has grown considerably over the years, and this lovely farmhouse provided a place where we could all be together yet still have plenty of space if we felt like being alone. Surrounded by cornfields and grazing cows, the home is immaculately clean! We didn't see a single bug inside the place, which is amazing when you consider how much it's surrounded by nature. The beds were very comfortable, and the linens and towels were plentiful. The playroom filled with toys delighted our 2, 6, and 7 year olds, as did watching the cows coming and going throughout the day. The parlor was perfect for our after-dinner bingo games, and s'mores at the campfire was a great way to end each day. The kitchen was modern, spacious for cooking, and well-stocked with dishes, pots, etc. The dishwasher was an added bonus, as we did plenty of cooking and eating! (I felt guilty about the amount of trash we left!) We never ran out of hot water and also were happy to be able to do some laundry mid-stay. The wide open spaces surrounding the house were great for all kinds of outdoor games and for our lab, who loved this place as much as we did! Visiting Cowan's Gap has been an annual family tradition for over 70 years, and we now hope to make the Parnell farmhouse a part of this tradition.
We had a great time! Beautiful location, charming home and lovely cows. Our kids want to know when we're coming back.
This was an amazing place. A perfect, quiet, relaxing getaway. The house is in a beautiful, quiet location, but close enough to plenty of day trips, like Gettysburg, and Cowan's Gap state park. We had two young families with our group, and really appreciated the family friendly environment, the toys left for the children, baby monitors, pack and play, etc. The house had plenty of space, an amazing kitchen, and everything was well kept and prepared. Would definitely recommend this place for a getaway vacation!
We decided to stay in the farmhouse since we went on a ski trip to whitetail.
The house is very nice and comfortable.
The location is kind of far from town.
We enjoyed a long weekend at this beautiful farmhouse -- it was exactly what we were hoping for our getaway, with our primary goals being to have plenty of hangout time with friends (four adults and five kids aged 10-15); prepare and enjoy yummy meals in a nice kitchen; and go skiing at Whitetail w/o having to face a long drive. This farmhouse nailed it!! It's clean, comfortable and big; has a fantastic HVAC that kept us cozy warm on two very cold nights; is wonderfully appointed with comfortable beds, nice linens and towels; has a well-stocked kitchen with every appliance/cooking tool you could ever need; and has had a lot of upgrades (kitchen and bathrooms in particular) that made our stay incredibly comfortable. The owners have thought of everything, with notebooks and brochures of nearby attractions, and we loved reading about the history of the 1860s house, as well as the fact that it's stayed in the family for nine generations! We all loved saying hello to the cute and curious cows every morning and evening, and we found the 10-15 minute drive to Whitetail very easy. We also enjoyed two spectacular sunsets - the house is situated perfectly for sky gazing! We would stay here again in a heartbeat -- it's a great home-away-from-home and a far more special memory than staying in a hotel could ever be. Re: the TV situation, FYI the only network channel available is NBC, so if you want to watch something specific that's not on NBC (we ended up watching the Super Bowl via a hotspot-linked laptop), come prepared. Not a knock against the owner or the house AT ALL -- we knew about it all upfront -- just throwing it out there to help future guests' packing list. :)
The farmhouse is approximately 1.5 hours from Hershey Park, 2 hours from Lancaster, and 1 hour from Gettysburg.
