Great Early June Getaway for Alums to Return to Decorah

  • 4 of 5

Overall, our group of 4 really enjoyed our stay at the Nest. Being alumni of Luther College, we all enjoyed being in such a great spot in downtown Decorah!

The Good:

- Place was clean with comfortable furniture

- The kitchen was great to work in, with nice appliances, cookware, dishes, and utensils.

- There was plenty of linen available (plus a nice washer/dryer) for our group of 4.

- The wifi was excellent, and we enjoyed being able to connect to the Bluetooth speaker system.

- Check-out was very easy and the location was great (middle of downtown).

- We enjoyed the $20 Magpie Coffee credit.

- Appreciated the ability to have our dog stay with us at the property.

- One parking spot available in the side alley (rear of property), which is next to the barbecue restaurants grill/smoker. Plenty of nearby unrestricted parking as well.

The Not So Good:

- Arrived at 2pm per the check-in time, but because the cleaning of the property was not yet completed we were asked to leave and return at 3:30pm.

- The bedroom opens out to the side alley, which now shares space and is above the adjoining barbecue restaurant. Due to the heat and smoke smell, we were unable to have windows open. Because the wall AC unit in the living room also did not cool the bedroom, it was too hot to be comfortable to sleep in the bedroom.

- Would prefer an electronic refund of the security deposit, rather than having to send a mailing address and wait 1-2 weeks.

We enjoyed our stay

  • 4 of 5

The loft was as shown. Nice accomodationss that are very close to everything. We walked everywhere. 15 min walk to toppling Goliath and pulpit Rock. 30 to ice cave. Reason why not 5 stars is because it is rather noisy. A lot of banging/slamming and loud talking from the business below us. Host was very nice and was quick to respond to requests/questions. If location is primary concern, this is the place. If you are looking for quiet place to relax, may want to look elsewhere.

Wonderful place to stay in Decorah

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Nest while visiting our daughter in Decorah. When I walked in I was amazed how spacious and stylish it was and how comfortable. The full kitchen allowed us to have breakfast together with her friends with lots of room to visit. Loved how close it was to lovely Decorah scenic Main Street, very walkable, yet, little noise. The Nest was very clean and well kept, other reviewers mentioned cigarette smell, we had no problems with that.

I would highly recommend the Nest to anyone visiting Decorah. If you don't need the amenities of a hotel, you will get more room, great style, and a full beautiful kitchen for your stay.

Top Notch Accommodations for Weekend Away

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at The Nest for 2 nights/3 days recently as part of a weekend getaway to Decorah. We have an infant and appreciated the spacious loft as well as the washer/dryer in the unit. Our other option in town was Hotel Winneshiek, and we feel we got much more space and bang for our buck at The Nest - it is essentially an apartment/loft. It is very tastefully decorated and has everything you might need (kitchen supplies, shower supplies, laundry, etc). The location was key for us - we walked to many of the shops and other sights in town - and it is perfectly located for such activities. You are within walking distance to the grocery store, town center, coffee shops, restaurants and boutique shopping. The kitchen is nice if you want to cook a few meals to cut down on eating out costs. The space is very spacious and has a trendy historic vibe - and there is a bonus porch on the back. The bed was one of the most comfortable beds I've slept in!

Another added bonus is the $20 credit to Magpie Coffeehouse. We had the best breakfast I've had in a long time there and their coffee and other baked goods are also to die for. We used the credit on our last morning in town and are so glad we did. Very nice added amenity - and they also left Magpie coffee in the kitchen for our use. So delicious!

I would say there are only two drawbacks - the back entrance is a bit scary as far as walking across the roof of the business below to get to the back door. It's not unsafe necessarily, but there are no railings. The 3-4 steps that lead up to the back entrance aren't secured to the unit at all, so that could be improved safety-wise potentially. A safer alternative would be to use the front stairs entrance, but we drove several places and primarily used the back entrance because of the parking spot location. The other drawback is while we didn't experience this until the morning that we left, there is some cigarette smoke odor. We think there must be a tenant next to The Nest or underneath who smokes - we didn't smell it at all until the morning we left so perhaps they were away for the weekend. Then it was pretty evident near the bathroom/bedroom doorways. Not so much in the rest of the unit. Just something to note for anyone with a sensitivity.

The Nest is the only place we'd stay if we would return to Decorah! Highly recommended.
