What is the Barnsion?
The Barnsion setting is on a large central Montana ranch sitting between four mountain ranges. You have 360 degree views awaiting you with all the sights, sounds, and smells you would expect on any working cattle, sheep, grain, and haying ranch. It would not be uncommon for several hundred cattle or a couple thousand sheep to be trailed through the yard. The machinery and equipment scattered nearby are not props for a bed and breakfast, but the necessary tools and equipment needed to operate the main agriculture businesses on Miller Ranch. The sheep herder wagons, visible here, are still utilized occasionally for seasonal help during calving and lambing time and have been a part of the history of the ranch dating back to 1977 for this generation and a life time of the preceding generations.
The idea for the 'Barnsion' was birthed from a wish to build a horse barn within close proximity of our home and the need for a woodworking shop. It seemed very logical to combine the two ideas with a common roof and wall. Hosting visitors is a big part of our lives, so our dreaming took the approach to add on a room for guests. After planning these areas on the ground level, it seemed a waste to build this without utilizing the upper level possibilities. One idea led to another and we have the 'Barnsion'. The main beams for the construction of the ' Barnsion' were salvaged from a demolition site and the front porch logs were pieced together from the remains of 60-70 year old power poles taken down on the ranch. The entire building is heated from waste oil from our mechanical shop and collected from the surrounding area.
The name 'Barnsion' came from the nickname the locals called it during construction. It seemed a cross between a barn and a mansion. We are not aware of any other structure with this name or built like this building, therefore we have the one and only original 'Barnsion'
Sheds are a large part of the ranching history and were usually built using the common wall of a larger barn to provide protection and shelter in the time of storms.
On the lower level of the 'Barnision', is a lodging facility we call the 'Shed'. We designed and built the 'Shed' to have a private suite for our personal guests visiting at the ranch. We needed a place where friends could bring their families and enjoy time on the ranch or in the area and have privacy to enjoy some fantastic family time. Part of these plans included a custom kitchen made from rustic blue pine and repurposed granite. The Shed has everything you will need to prepare and enjoy your favorite meals.
On the counter you will enjoy a generous portion of fresh coffee roasted for us locally by Snowy Mountain Coffee.
The Shed is especially romantic when it's cold with the cozy warmth of the Vermont Castings Fireplace. Close the curtains, dim the lights, and watch the fire. Let it warm and rejuvenate you after a hard day of riding, touring, or meetings. With the tub and shower, and plenty of warm water, you'll be clean, cozy, and warm, and ready to relax.
Because of the fantastic insulation, the Shed is cool in the summer. Although we have a window air conditioner, it is actually not needed most of the time.
Whether it is hot or cold, you can enjoy your favorite shows on Dish Network from the lazy boy, the rocker, or the California King bed on the main floor.
A highlight for children is up the pine ladder. Here you'll find two full pillow top beds, behind the handcrafted railings, overlooking the kitchen and fireplace.
This suite is best suited for a family, or a couple for a romantic getaway but with the semi-private California King bed on the main floor and the 2 loft beds, this unit can sleep up to six people.
The Shed is affordable enough for a single or couple and yet has enough room for a good sized family. Being on the ground level, this unit will accommodate guests with some types of disabilities.
The Shed can be utilized by itself, or used with the Upper Room, which is a separate VRBO listing # 576769
'The Upper Room'
Please check out the Upper Room listed above for a complete description. It has three uniquely designed bedrooms, which have either king-sized pillow top beds or super twin single beds, providing versatility for couples, singles and children. It has 2 bathrooms and a jetted tub, two decks, fantastic views and a full kitchen, Dish network, a large screen TV. This unit with sleep from 9-12 guests.
The Upper Room can be used with the Shed to accommodate from 15-18 total adults.
Under certain conditions we may also consider opening up a private area in our home nearby with two more bedrooms and a private bathroom, a walk in shower and jetted tub. If you have a large group, this could provide accommodations for up to 4 more adults, with a queen bed, king bed, and baby crib. This can be utilized with either the Upper Room or the Shed.
With all these rooms we have beds for up to 22 adults at the location.
Outdoor Kitchen-Fireplace-Gazebo-Archway, and Patio:
Summer shade, an outdoor sink, sandstone rock countertops, barbecues and grills, archways, deck tables and chairs, evening romantic lighting, a crackling fire and the smell of food make this place a one of a kind piece of art with a function.
This space may be available for our guests with advance permission. Many nights we would be glad to share this with you or allow the use of this space by yourselves. This has been a favorite place for private parties and small weddings. Occasionally you might hear music coming from here as the sun sets and the cool evening breeze makes the fire needed. The sunsets from here in the summer months are breathtaking looking up at the Crazy Mountains and the Musselshell River Valley. It really doesn't get much better than this.
On the south side of The Barnsion is a tack room, fresh year around water, a round corral, and a beautiful fir barn with stalls filled with fresh shavings from the wood shop next door.
These spaces may be available for guest’s enjoyment, with special permission. Ask us about bringing your horse and taking trail rides around the ranch without having the restraints of staying on a specific trail and explore the natural beauty and fresh air.
OTHER ATTRACTIONS AND ACTIVITIES
Around the Ranch:
Every season brings a time for new experiences around the ranch. Calving, lambing, irrigating, haying, harvesting, weaning time and shipping to market are normal activities here. Although it would be difficult to guarantee, there is always something happening on Miller Ranch that you may want to experience.
Fishing, Hunting, Bird watching, Photography:
Whitetail deer are normally seen on the ranch and there may be the seasonal chatter of nesting Sandhill Cranes or the clear distinct song of the Western Meadowlark. The American Fork Creek runs through the ranch and the Musselshell River is nearby. They have smart Brown Trout and, with the proper licenses, may be available for your enjoyment. The Musselshell Valley and the local mountain ranges are known to have many whitetail deer, antelope, mule deer, game birds, bear, lion, and elk. If you like to use a gun, bow, or hunt with a camera, it can probably be done from here. Public hunting may be open nearby on the Montana Department of Fish Wildlife and Parks' block management parcels or 30 minutes away in one of the mountain ranges.
Bicycles and ATV's:
Bicycles are always welcome and ATV's are welcome with some reservations. There are times when we cannot have an ATV moving through the livestock or riding on the hay ground. I am sure we can find a suitable place for you to enjoy here on the ranch. Many experienced riders may want to enjoy the open trails in the United States Forest Service only about 30 minutes away.
Hiking and Walking:
Take a walk to the creek and enjoy yourself without having the restrictions of a designated trail. Enjoy the sunrise with a hike in the fresh Montana air. Because it may change daily, please ask us where it would be safe to explore.
Horses and the Stable:
Ask us about bringing your horse and taking trail rides around the ranch without having the restraints of staying on a specific trail and explore the natural beauty and fresh air.
Rest, Relaxation, Restoration:
Friends staying at the 'Barnsion' have told us the best part of this experience was the peaceful atmosphere, enjoying the beautiful views, and the rest, relaxation and restoration from the pressures of life.
There is a saying in Montana, 'If you don't like the weather right now, just hang on it will change soon!' We have seen 90 degree temperature swings in two days due the Chinook winds that blow through our area. The weather in Central Montana can change quickly.
It is always pleasant inside these accommodations with air conditioning for the hot months and a cozy fire in the stove for the cooler months. You may be looking for a place to write, read, study, play games, quilt, or get away from a crazy fast paced life. Every group or family will have specific goals and ideals. We will try to do our best to accommodate all your desires.
Because our location is nearly the geographic center of Montana, our guests will be within a day’s drive from any site Montana. Yellowstone Park is a day trip from here. Within two hours drive from here you can enjoy just about any cultural or recreational activity the state has to offer. Whether skiing at Bridger Bowl or Showdown, snowmobiling, rafting, fishing, hunting, or site seeing, the list could go on endlessly.
Several major airports are within two hours, making it easy to fly in and drive here without major traffic.
Hi there, we are David and Renee Miller and we love living in Central Montana! We were married in 1975 and moved to Harlowton in 1976. Renee started working at her career as a banker that year and David formed Miller Ranch the next year which is a family ranching partnership. Thirty-eight years later we still love living here on the ranch.
We continue these responsibilities today as well as working other ventures and businesses. We are the parents of two grown children, have six grandchildren and have lived in our present home on the ranch since 1981. “The Barnsion' dream started in the fall of 2011.
We are located in the heart of the BIG SKY country so we are close to the mountains, but love the Musselshell River Valley and the wide open spaces all in one place! We look forward to sharing the Barnsion with you, as you experience your own time under the big skies of Montana, where clean air, bright stars and that wild west adventure awaits you!
Although we work very hard at business, we know that faith, family, friends, and fellowship are our priorities of life.
'As we age' it seems more important to live and eat healthy. Part of the master plan is to build a greenhouse that can be heated year around and provide fresh vegetables for ourselves and guests. The compost is on site and the power, water, and heat tubing have been run underground in preparation for this exciting project.
A riding arena is also planned where guests can spend time exercising or training their horse or warming them up before going on a trail ride.
The original idea for the 'Barnsion' came at 3:00 am in the morning while visiting relatives in Idaho. I drew a sketch of the external view of the building, as I saw it, and started dreaming about exactly how to build the structure and eventually settling on a proposed floor plan.
Several tried to discourage me and stated 'What in the world are you doing building a giant box out here?' and another comment was 'You have really gone crazy now'. I must say I understand more what Noah must have gone through when the Lord told him to build the 'Ark'.
The world renowned architects and draftsmen and their plans were left out and small sketches proved to be enough for the talented builders we had. When you put several creative people together, you come up with many good ideas.
We are so grateful for everyone that helped us build this building and learned from everyone that helped us. We could not have accomplished this without you.
If you are willing to cook for yourself, you can enjoy all the benefits of the larger dude ranches at a fraction of the price.
We have lots of options to accomodate a single person, a couple for a romantic weekend or enough room to accomocate up to 22 people for weddings, retreats or family reunions.
If your plans include horses, you can bring your own horse who will have a place to stay as well.
Everything in 'The Barnsion' is handmade, no factory look, totally unique!
The atmosphere is laid back and peaceful here. No city traffic, sounds, or chaos here.
I held a conference at The Barnsion on October 29th. It is centrally located and ideal for Montana crowds under 100 in attendance. People attended from Helena, Bozeman, Billings, Lewistown, Denton, Winifred, Ryegate, Long beach, and Big Timber. It was an "all day" conference with a meal provided. The chairs were comfortable and the setting uniquely "Montana". The Millers were very accommodating. I would call it a great success. I plan on doing it again! Thank-You!
Before I left for Montana I looked at the reviews... I thought this place must be nice for it to have nothing but 5 stars. (I have never seen that on any of my vacations before.)
We rolled into Montana at a very inconvenient time for the Miller's. I called Dave and told him and he said just go in and get some rest from the long drive. It was no big deal to him at all.
For the first two days the guys in my group were video chatting their families showing them where we were staying. We were blown away with how nice it was. IT FELT LIKE HOME!!
Better than the Barnsion itself was Dave Miller. I am a Finance Manager at an Auto Group in Michigan. I deal with tons of people on a daily basis. I am not sure if I have ever met a more genuine , kind, God fearing person in my life. Dave is incredible and I will never lose touch with him.
I thought is there anything that I can say negative about the Barnsion and I thought....well " yes", I wish we would have met Dave's Wife. She must be amazing as well! Amazing location, Amazing accommodations, and most important.....Amazing people.
Thank you Miller's! We will miss you until we see you next hunting season. I already can't wait!
My husband and I stayed at The Shed for our 5 year anniversary during our trip to Montana. The Miller's met us upon arrival and not only showed us where we were staying, but gave us a complete property tour. It is a beautiful property and I can tell you the pictures do not do it justice. The Millers have put a lot of time and thought into the construction and finished product of the The Barnsion. The property was clean and well-furnished along with a delicious loaf of fresh baked bread, honey and ground coffee. We visited with the Miller's for several hours the first afternoon of arrival. They were kind and friendly and provided us with some local history as well as some ideas for sightseeing during our stay. I would highly recommend you schedule a stay at The Barnsion if you are ever in Montana. You will not be disappointed! I can't wait to get back myself!
The Barnsion Shed was very clean and welcoming, and the western decor was so appropriate with every detail taken into account. We were greeted with delicious fresh home made bread, Montana honey, and ground coffee. The Millers were very accommodating and friendly, and we very much enjoyed our informative chats with them and our stay there. Hope to visit again some day.
The Barnsion provides the best of Montana. The accommodations are fantastic and the location/scenery are up there with the best. The peacefulness and tranquility are unmatched. The owners are wonderful, very accommodating down to the finest detail. I would highly recommend The Barnsion to anyone looking to enjoy a genuine, authentic, relaxing stay under The Big Sky.
We travel a lot for our business and often take our two young children with us. The Shed at the Barnsion had all of the comforts of home that allow us to work away from home and still live as a family. It was exceptionally clean and we were greeted with homemade bread and a wonderful blend of coffee beans. We will definitely be staying here again if we have the opportunity to.
