Photos and Description of this 1 bedroom holiday cabin in Lewis and Clark County - Stecker Ranch

Our hand-built log cabin sleeps 4-6 people in comfort.

The cabin we call THE WINTER PALACE is our most cozy, luxurious one. Its name originated one big winter when it kept us warm and toasty during a run of 20 below weather.

The LIVING ROOM has a cushy recliner, a hand-made rocking chair, and a full-size super comfy couch with matching pillows in American Indian motif. There is a modern, windowed wood-stove and a hand-made desk with mirror and table lamp. Etchings and lithographs adorn the walls and bookshelves are loaded with good books. Tall, old-fashioned, handmade windows give plenty of light and great views of the wild mountains and a chandelier and kerosene lamps warm your nights.

The KITCHEN has a new electric range and oven and an ample refrigerator and microwave. A vintage pie safe contains a complete set of cups, glasses, dishes and bowls, and a full set of cutlery. Pots, pans and skillets, a chopping board, and a variety of utensils are ready to use along with a set of knives, a coffee maker, and an espresso unit. There are twin sinks, cupboards for storage, and a table for four with straight back chairs.

The BEDROOM is a rustic charmer with two Queen beds with luxurious mattresses, crisp linens, warm blankets and down comforters. It has a sturdy woodstove, a chest of drawers, and a built-in closet for clothing.

The BATHROOM has a glass enclosed shower, a toilet, a sink with cabinet and mirror, a full-size storage cabinet, and a ventilation window.

The GYM has a Universal exercise machine, a free weight set, and a bench.

Our SAUNA is a point of pride, with a woodstove heater and polished oak benches that easily seat six. It has an insulated ceiling paneled in cedar, an air-tight double-paned window and electric light. The floor is masoned mica schist as is the wall behind the exhaust chimney. It's the height of luxury on cool evenings.

All rooms are carpeted, or have decorative rugs, or both. Windows are snugly fitted and can be opened as desired. Log walls are clean and polished and the roof is insulated to be cool in summer and warm in winter.

We have two other accomodations for overflow bookings: The Bunk House and Jim’s Summer Place. Both are sturdy, hand-built, comfortable log cabins, situated up in the quiet woods above the main cabins but without the cushy amenities of the Winter Palace.

The Bunk House has a small kitchen with an old Monarch woodstove, and a living room/bedroom with a bunk bed and full size mattresses, a comfy large chair, a chest of drawers, and a small, efficient wood stove to take the chill off spring or fall mornings. There is no running water but there is a functional outhouse. Guests whose parents or friends are in the Winter Palace will use the facilities there.

Jim’s Summer Cabin is similar in layout but without the bunk beds. It has a small kitchen with a microwave, and the bedroom holds one Queen bed, suitable for two kids or an adult couple. Again, there is no running water or indoor toilet, but occupants can use Winter Palace facilities.

We don’t advertise these cabins for rent but either or both can be had with bedding and towels for $150 per night (three night minimum) or $700 per week.

About Paul Edwards

Paul and Helen Edwards, and our son Jason, own the ranch and the five pioneer-built log cabins. For most of the year we’re at the Ranch or at our home in Helena and can be reached for reservations at one or the other.

Paul Edwards purchased this cabin in 1991

Why Paul Edwards chose Montana

It had always been my dream as a writer to have a place in the Wild Rockies as far from the turmoil of urban madness as possible. We scoured Northwest Montana and, having seen a couple of dozen remarkable properties, knew this was the one for us. It has been all we hoped for and more, and every day at Stecker Ranch nourishes our spirits.

What makes this cabin unique

The ranch is on the Sun River, directly below the soaring crags and ramparts of the Rocky Mountain Front. Our cabins, surrounded by Doug Fir and Limber Pine forest, are in de facto wilderness where grizzly forage and elk bugle in the rut, and Canada geese make sky music in the fall. The confusion and cares of modern city life are far away and there are no neighbors. At the ranch you feel the joy, peace and serenity of true wild country, and you might imagine that you are living in the land as it was when only the Blackfeet set their lodges here pursuing the vast herds of buffalo.

Second stay here. Have been in the summer and early fall and had a wonderful trip both times. Clean and well maintained cabin, high speed internet, and a great owner. Plenty to do close by. Highly recommend!!

Great Rocky Mountain Front Experience

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this cabin for four nights in July 2016 in order to experience life on the Rocky Mountain Front. What we found when we arrived was an updated, spacious, well-appointed Little House on the Prairie with mountains jutting up immediately behind it. We can't say how old the house is, but it certainly felt historic. There's no TV (we appreciated that), but there are plenty of books to read, as well as high-quality wifi.

We were a little worried there wouldn't be enough for our kids, ages 4 and 8, to do, but we found plenty. They swam in the Sun River and a local reservoir, played some of the board games we found at the house, and ogled at real cowboys and played the jukebox at the Buckhorn restaurant/bar in Augusta. Just a minute from the house at Sun Canyon Ranch, we sipped local microbrews and ate delicious hamburgers while our kids made friends with other kids at the ranch. Our 8-year-old and I were able to go on a 2-hour-long trail ride up a mountain in Lewis and Clark National Forest through Sun Canyon. The 4-year-old, who was upset about being left behind (not old enough, according to their rules), was treated by the ranch owner's son to a ride on his pony and his golf cart. They also played handball (pool, minus the cues) and horse shoes with some of the younger ranch guests. They had a ball! Each night, we settled down under the house's down comforters to read Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House series--what a perfect setting, because the house allows you to really imagine what it must have been like back in those days. Thanks for an outstanding experience at Stecker Ranch!

The best of both worlds

  • 5 of 5

This cabin along the Rocky Mountain Front is wonderful. There are views of the Front and the prairie to the east. It is really quiet and secluded here. There is a lot of land for walks with dogs. The cabin is very well kept and a pretty spot inside as well as outside! The kitchen had everything needed for cooking. The two beds in one room would be comfortable for families but a bit awkward for two couples. We had great weather in early June but the wood stove would make it cozy on inclement days. Access to hiking trails is another great aspect of the location. We maintain wonderful memories of our four nights at this cabin.

Restful, quiet cabin

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here with our granddaughter for five days. Had a great time. Granddaughter went horseback riding at the lodge nearby and we took hikes. The only grocery store in Augusta (18 miles away) is one of those rare places that has everything even tho it doesn't look like much from the outside. The beds in the cabin are very nice and firm. Plenty of towels and the kitchen has lots of utensils and primary condiments-catsup, mustard, mayo, salt, pepper, etc. We'll look forward to coming back. Summer sunrises are spectacular.

The ranch, on The Rocky Mountain Front under soaring Castle Reef and Sawtooth Mountain, is near the Sun River trailhead entry to the spectacular Bob Marshall Wilderness.

The wild country all around us is as Lewis and Clark found it. Biologists call it The American Serengeti. Every animal and bird that they saw still lives here, free and wild, excepting only the buffalo. Elk roam our hills and calve on the adjacent Sun River Game Range, and grizzly forage through in Spring and Fall. Black bear and mountain lion roam and den in the forest around us, and both Whitetail and Mule deer abound. Despite the shameful de-listing of the wolf, our mountains aree refuge for them and their calls are still heard in our back country.

The property is bounded on the north by the Sun River--a Blue Ribbon Trout Stream--home to big Rainbows and lunker Browns as well as beaver, Canada Geese and many water birds.

Bluebirds nest here in Spring and four species of hummingbirds spend the summer, as do Swifts and Swallows. Golden and Bald eagles hunt the prairies and fish the rivers and lakes.
