About the property

Cabin On Birkie & Camba Trails.

Modern timber frame cabin built in 2009. Open floor plan designed for gathering with family and friends. Main level kitchen opens right into the family room with a wood burning stove. The center of the kitchen boasts a timber frame table that seats 10-12. Adjacent to the sitting area is a 'bump out' with extra space for relaxing, napping or sleeping. There is a pass through space in the wall from the entry that allows firewood to be set right next to the wood burning stove. Two sliding glass doors exit the kitchen space to bring you out to the spacious deck or a screened in porch with a gas grill.

The second and third levels are lofted and open to the space below. The second level has a bedroom, bath and sitting area with a spiral staircase that will take you up to the loft space. The loft (and the two levels below) offers beautiful views inside and out. We overlook the Namekagon River Valley to the West. We are nestled right up the woods and the Birkie trail to our East and South.

The structure of the cabin is concrete. The floors on the main and lower level are concrete. The lower level is encased in concrete which keeps it quiet and holds a consistent temperature. The walls in the lower level are lined with corrugated metal to allow skis and bikes to be moved in and out. There is a bedroom, bunk room, bathroom, wax room (for waxing skis) and sauna in the lower level. The washer and dryer are located on this level as well. There is a walk out that will bring you underneath the deck where there is an outdoor shower and access to the large yard.

There is in-floor heat on all levels. The upper levels are heated further by the wood burning stove.

About Scott Brown

We live in Minneapolis and getaway to our slice of heaven in Hayward. I grew up in Milwaukee and my wife in Iowa. We met in college at Iowa State and settled in Minnesota.

For years we have made the drive to Hayward for the Birkebeiner and loved the energy of the race and the surrounding community. It has a magic about it. As life often works, many things fell into place effortlessly and next thing we knew, we were buying some property on the Birkie trail and building this beautiful cabin.

We love our cabin and its close proximity to all the silent sports. We recently have had children and are not able to get up here as often as we would like. We love the area so much that it made sense to open up our cabin for others to enjoy it too.

Why Scott Brown chose Hayward

We have designed our cabin for comfort and relaxation. We wanted a space that we could come and have quiet and solitude. We also wanted this space to easily house our extended family and lend itself to being together. We went the extra mile and outfitted the cabin with thoughtful amenities.

Further, this community provides year round entertainment and enjoyment for all types of activities - skiing, snow mobiling, snow shoeing, hiking, biking, boating, ATVing, fishing, hunting, etc.

What makes this cabin unique

We fell in love with the views of the Namekagon River Valley. The sunrise, the sunsets, the fall colors and the stars at night. We loved that we walk a few minutes to the Birkie trail and can ski for hours.

We added many unique architectural features inside the home. We love to sit in different areas of the cabin, enjoying different views of the inside and out.

We added the 'bump out' (L-shaped seating area by the wood burning stove) to feel part of the outside. At night, if you lay here you can see the stars. It is the best!

We purposely do not have wifi, cable or phone service in the cabin. So much of our lives is connected to technology. We come here to get away from these things. There is cell service available in the area.

Beautiful Location and Property

Loved the quiet peaceful location, yet right on the trails. House was well kept and we really enjoyed the wood burning stove and sauna after a long day. Plenty of dishes, glassware, and utensils for our group of 7, and the large kitchen table was perfect for us. The 'ski room' was a great place to stash our skis, snowshoes, and bikes too.

Beware that owner has a $500 (refundable) security deposit AND REQUIRES that you either allow another $5,000 (that's not a typo, it's $5,000) to be charged to your credit card OR you MUST buy insurance for $99.00 to cover damages up to $5,000.

Great Northwoods Cabin!!

I'd echo what most others are saying - it is an awesome cabin to rent! All the amenities you need in a cabin - I mean, it even has a wine cooler! I have no complaints to make! The in-floor heat was great as well - no need for slippers. Don't pass this one up - you won't be disappointed.

Great weekend had by all

We are a group of women that get together every year on Pres. Day weekend to X-C ski, snowshoe, hike, cook and enjoy time together. This was a great place to gather. There was room for everyone, a kitchen stocked with everything we needed, beautiful windows to catch sunlight and a great deck. The weather was beautiful and the only thing we were wanting for was some good snow. We made the best of it and got out to hike a few of the dirt roads and trails but couldn't help but be wishful of explore some of the many ski trails that were so close by. Hopefully next year. . .

Lovely property, Difficult owner

We stayed in this cabin a couple years ago and enjoyed it. We returned for a stay this year and arrived to a cold (50F) cabin which took 4 hours to warm up. There were no matches or kindling to help light a fire in the wood stove to speed up the process. It was also dusty and not very clean when we arrived. At the end of our stay, we cleaned as instructed. A week later, we were told it took "extra time" to clean up our mess and the owner claimed it cost twice as much to clean and that there was damage we did not do. I had to contact my credit card company to get back the damage deposit. Beware.

Owner's Response: It is truly unfortunate when we have disrespectful renters like Erika Saveraid. We rent our family property for others to enjoy and make memories just like we have but we expect them to treat us and our property with dignity and respect. To set the record straight it is clearly explained in the instructions that the heat will be set to 50F in the winter between renters and yes it does take 4 hours to warm up since it is in floor heat. We do have a fireplace and typically have an abundance of firewood to heat the cain very quickly. I was there the next weekend to inspect all of the damage from her stay and there was plenty of kindling and lighters to start a fire. It was also very clean since it has been cleaned weekly with all of the rentals we've had this winter. When our cleaning crew bills us for their time it is very consistent when responsible renters stay there. The bill I received from them for Erika's stay was twice as much as typical. The report I received was that there was feces smeared all over the bathroom wall, the place was a mess, there was marker all over the downstairs wood bench (which I need to have sanded down to remove), and there were dirty dishes. When I asked her about the report she didn't deny any of it but instead chose to berate me, complain about things that had been explained prior to her visit and then threaten me. The damage deposit was withheld until I could reconcile her account of things and the cleaning crew's report. In the end, since I did not have the documentation that I require from them to withhold the damage deposit other than the invoice and marked wood bench, I refunded it in full to be fair. Although Ericka has stayed with us in the past without incident she in not longer welcome to return. If you are considering renting from us and will not treat our property with respect and follow our rules, I encourage you to find one of the many other properties to rent in the area. Thank you.

Perfect Cabin in a Great Location

Our group could not have been happier with this cabin. We have stayed in others in the Hayward area and this worked for our group perfectly. The main great room of the cabin was ideal - with all of the modern amenities you'd hope for. The over-sized dining room table was awesome for gathering everyone around it. Only a few short miles into Hayward, it was great for the couple of times we had to run into town to pick up random items. The cabin is perfect for a secluded relaxing weekend, however, some of our group wanted to watch movies and football game, so we did bring a TV which was not a big deal at all. Overall, I would recommend this cabin to anyone interested. Great stay and great times!
