Lori and I met in Grand Canyon where we were both river guides. After a 13 year residence in Uber-rural Torrey, Utah (pop 250) we moved to the metropolis of Dolores/Cortez and bought a 26 acre hayfield. We put in a septic system and bought a 20 year old, 30 foot travel trailer where we lived while I built the 'shop.'
Lori Cooper purchased this apartment in 1995
The 'Apartment' as we call it, is one wing of the shop building. We and the two kids lived in it for seven years while I scratched together the capital to build the 'dream home' out of pocket. We've been in the house for 12 years now and the kids are gone. In a lot of ways it would make more sense for us to move back into the Apartment and rent out the house. It's got everything you need.
Sorry, Montana, these are the best sunsets on earth. 192 degrees of sky. See into three states. The San Juan Mountains are America's Alps and less than a hour to the northeast. You can be at the base of the trail up Mt Wilson, the 14,000 footer featured on the Coors beer can in about the same time as it would take to get to Canyonlands National Park heading the other way. Single-track biking through the pines or the desert, 15 minutes either way. The Dolores River has some fun whitewater a few months of the year and the nearby San Miguel has some genuinely challenging sections. Flyfishing on any number of streams. Lake fishing at the second biggest body of water in Colorado. Canyons of the Ancients National Monument. You can see our placed from the first overlook when you're on top of the Mesa Verde scarp where the big mama cliff dwellings are. In fact, it's probably the coolest place in the world....
We loved our stay and would have stayed longer. Lori and Tim have put time and care into decorating the home for a more pleasant, clean, and comfortable stay. As others have mentioned, the kitchen is well-equipped and the property is part of a pleasant peaceful rural experience. It was great to see deer pass through, to enjoy fresh Colorado water, and to smell clean, fresh air.
We stayed here for four nights and could easily have stayed longer. Hosts Lori and Tim are right on the same property, very friendly, and we felt we could call on them any time. The guest cottage was well-kept and spacious, with the best-equipped kitchen we've ever had in a VRBO. It's a rural setting and the property is very pretty, with its own small herd of deer that walked through every morning, and a field of cattle next door. WiFi worked fine. The location is perfect for spending time at Mesa Verde, and we even did a round trip to Chaco Canyon one day. If you go to Chaco Canyon try to stop at El Bruno's in Cuba, NM for lunch. In Delores, Montezuma Restaurant was a comfortable family place with great Mexican food. We had a wonderful time at the Cooper's place in Delores and highly recommend it!
Lori was absolutely wonderful! The house was very quiet, clean and comfortable!! It is I. An excellent location to visit Mesa Verde among other attractions!! And downtown Cortez is close too! But the view... The view takes the cake!
This lodging was excellent and very spacious with comfortable seating and beds. The full size kitchen contained all the dishes, pots, and kitchen equipment needed. We especially liked having a full size washer and dryer. The location was rural and quiet with a good view of the mountains and was only about 10 min from Cortez and convenient to Mesa Verde and near Anasazi Heritage Center, an outstanding museum. Lori was very nice and interesting and gave us fresh peaches and apples from her orchard and tomatoes from her garden. Great place to stay.
Very clean and comfortable. Fully stocked kitchen so I could do a lot of cooking and baking. Large bathroom with lots of hot water and strong water from the shower. I found the bed in the second bedroom more comfortable than bed in master. Washer and dryer so convenient and does large loads. Everything well-maintained. Owners very responsive. I would definitely stay there again.
We loved this little cottage on it's beautiful property. We'll definitely stay here again if we are in the area. The owners are very sweet and friendly. It is in a great location. Loved it..
