White Oak Pond is a beautiful 290 acre quiet lake nestled in the picturesque village of Holderness, New Hampshire. The pond has limited development with only 30 properties around the 3-mile shoreline. There is a 7.5 HP motor limit on the lake, which makes it ideal for swimming, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, paddle-boarding or just plain gazing at the ever-changing lake, listening for the call of the loons or watching a sunset.
The cottage is located two miles east of Holderness Village and 7 miles from Exit 24 (Ashland) off I-93.
This cozy cottage with two bedrooms in the main cottage and an additional bedroom in the attached studio is just right for a relaxing family vacation. It sleeps 6 with its two double beds and a set of bunk beds. There is a bath with tub in the main cottage plus a powder room and separate shower in the studio. The kitchen is equipped with stove and refrigerator, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, dishes, and cooking equipment. There is internet service in the cottage. There is a screened porch as well as a patio, picnic table and grill. This is a self-catering cottage so guests supply their own linens (though linen arrangements may be made) and are expected to leave the cottage clean and ready for the next guests. Pets will be considered on an individual basis.
The cottage is 250 feet from White Oak pond where there is a private beach for your personal use. The water is shallow near the beach, making it great for small children. There are a dock and a raft which are shared with the owners when they are in residence. Two canoes are available for your use and kayaks can usually be borrowed from the owners. There is a marina with a launch nearby on Squam Lake and boats may be rented there.
There are many nearby attractions from the Squam Lakes Science Center to the White Mountains and shopping in nearby Meredith. Clark's Trading Post, Ruggles Mine and Polar Caves are a few attractions which are a short drive away.
We are a couple in our eighties who needed a quiet, peaceful place that would provide a change of scene from the retirement community where we live. We found this spot to be just what we were looking for. The cabin is small, but comfy and neat, with all we needed for our week's visit. We stayed there near the end of August, when the weather was excellent: sunny, comfortable temperature and cool at night. Whatever provisions we needed could be had by driving a short distance away and, since we are addicted to the New York Times, we were delighted to find that the small mini-mart down the road carried it every day. The best part of our stay, however, was the lovely little private beach. We went there every day from 2:00 - 3:30 when the sun flooded the beach and we tried to soak up enough rays to last us through the coming winter months! We also took our cocktails down there at 5:00 and sat watching the changing light and listening to the gentle lapping of the water, hoping for another appearance by the loons. No motor boats or jet skis are allowed on White Oak Pond, so there is never any intrusion on nature's sounds. The occasional Sunfish working the breeze and kayaks exploring the waters provided just what was needed to complete the scene. There are many good restaurants nearby, as well as art galleries and craft stores. Next year, before we go back there, I hope to do some research on nearby hiking trails. The owners are lovely people and we enjoyed talking to them, finding that we had many things in common. They were most helpful in helping us get settled, but not the least bit intrusive. The only thing that we found difficult was the sound of traffic on nearby Route 3, but it seemed to calm down by nightfall. We would definitely recommend this place. There is nothing more soothing than falling asleep listening to the loons calling across the water.
My grown son and I rented the cottage primarily to enjoy some fishing in Squam Lake. We liked the idea of the cottage not being directly on Squam Lake since the Lake is so busy with water skiing and jet skis and just so many boats. We fished some on White Oak Pond in one of the canoes available with the cottage. White Oak Pond was beautiful, quiet and interesting. Much of the time we had the 273 acres of the Pond to ourselves. We had no problems with the cottage which has a wonderful screened in porch. It would be nice if the cottage was right on the water, but there is a nice beach with chairs for the cottage ; and we were on the Lake or Pond almost all day anyway. We would definitely look forward to returning.
The wife & I enjoyed our stay. The cottage was very clean. Quiet & peaceful setting. Couldn't ask for more! We would definitely rent it again. Our thanks to the owners .
We visited the cottage for 6 nights (myself, wife and three boys 5, 8, 11). Cottage was nice and very clean. Had everything we needed. Short, nice walk down to the lake to private beach. Sandy beach, clean water, nice swim out to the raft. The lake is probably the most quite lake we have ever stayed on - no powerboats or jet skis. The owners are really nice and helpful but not intrusive. Also, it is very conveniently located between 93 and Meredith. Would definitely consider coming back again!
