This lovely, quiet, private, free-standing cottage has lots of light and feels like a tree house in the redwoods. Fully furnished and newly re-done, this one bedroom has a very comfy king size bed, wood floors, bathroom, kitchen (gas stove), living room, full-size washer/dryer and a small office with a desk and picture window. Perfect for a couple’s retreat, or as a temporary relocation/transition home. Great place for a writer seeking inspiration and solitude. Mill Valley is a charming village with shops, great restaurants, and live music. It's close to the quaint European style town of Sausalito, and only 15 minutes from San Francisco. In minutes you can be on beautiful hiking and mountain biking trails on Mt. Tamalpais, in Muir Woods, and in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. It's 40 minutes to the Wine Country, one block from the biking/walking path from Mill Valley to Sausalito, one block from the bus stop to San Francisco and connections to SFO and Oakland airports; 10 minutes to the Golden Gate Bridge; 10 minutes to Sausalito (and a lovely ferry ride on the Bay to San Francisco) Dedicated parking is in a carport beneath the cottage.
My family has been in the Bay Area for generations and survived the San Francisco earthquake in 1906. My grandmother owned a cottage on Mt. Tamalpais in the 1920's. My father helped put up some of the original hiking trail signs on the mountain. I came back to Mill Valley when I was working as a CNN correspondent in San Francisco. I've traveled all over the world and Mill Valley is one of the most wonderful spots on earth.
Rusty purchased this cottage in 1995
Mill Valley is so close to one of the world's great cities, has numerous great restaurants and charm, yet it's minutes to be on hiking trails with gorgeous views and no one around. Trips to the wine country in Napa and Sonoma Valleys are 40 minutes away. This is the cottage on the property of my main house but is separated by trees, stairs and a deck. Because there are two redwoods just feet from the windows and small deck, you feel like you are in a tree-house. But there are many windows and LOTS of light. It feels very private yet, so close to everything by walking or by car.
There is also a small spa walking distance down the hill where you can get a massage.
Mill Valley has a film festival every October featuring international filmakers and their work. There are also a number of small coffee houses, art galleries and boutiques in town. For entertainment, the Throckmorton Theater has a variety of music, plays, and comedy. Also Sweetwater is a club which features a variety of musical acts. Nearby is the Green Gulch Farm, a Buddhist retreat featuring classes and organic produce.
Sausalito is only a couple miles away and you can walk or drive to this charming town right on San Francisco Bay which is very European in feel. There is also a great art festival there every September.
There are several state and federal recreation areas for hikers and bikers within ten miles of Mill Valley. Not only is there Muir Woods, with it's gorgeous huge redwoods, but Mt. Tamalpais where some of the first mountain bikes were designed to ride on the fire trails. Stinson Beach and Muir Beach are both quaint beach towns just over the hill from Mill Valley.
I fell in love with the property because it was SO close to where I worked in San Francisco, yet I felt like I was miles away from the rest of the world. The cottage is very private and quiet with soaring redwoods outside, yet lots of windows make it very light and cheery.
Great location close to downtown Mill Valley, Sausalito and access to PCH North. San Francisco is right across the Golden Gate. The apartment is fully equipped and comfortable
This cottage was so cute, clean, well-stocked, and quiet. In a great location close to SF but Mill Valley is close and very quaint with fabulous restaurants and shops. We really enjoyed coming to this cottage after a long day of adventure and reading in the comfy chair and just generally feeling very relaxed and happy...we want to come back!
My boyfriend and I stayed at this cottage for 3 nights while we were in town for a friend's wedding. This was our first experience renting off VRBO and it was a hit! The location is key if you are visiting San Francisco and are looking for something close enough to make for easy travel between the city and where you are staying, yet, far enough away from the city to give you a break and FRESH AIR when you've had your fill of the city for the day. When I came to leave my review just now, I can't help but be irritated at the previous reviewer's comments regarding the exterior of the house and the TV (of all things!). The location of the cottage is off a quiet (and steep!) street that is very woodsy. One night we came home and there was a whole family of deer in the driveway! I can honestly say, I didn't take much note about the actual exterior of the cottage because I was too busy looking around and enjoying the serenity of the area. Anyway, the interior of the house was super cute, very clean, and felt like a home away from home. The bed was very comfortable and it was a really nice perk to be able to do our laundry before we left! There's also a complimentary bottle of wine waiting for your when you get there... to me, anywhere that provides you with that kind of greeting gets an "A+" in my book. Even the people on the street were friendly. One of the neighbors down the road stopped us one morning when he saw us walking our bikes down the big hill and gave us some helpful/friendly tips of the area. There are loads of brochures/menus of things to do and places to eat in the office area. We tried three places to eat which were great. Make sure to try Sol Food!! It was delicious!! My only regret about this stay was that we were so busy (and tired!) that I didn't have time to write in the guestbook about our experience and leave a few helpful hints for out of towners.
* There is a bus stop less than a block away from the house. If you want to go to San Francisco (or even take the ferry from Sausalito) I highly recommend riding the bus! You'll want to look for the Golden Gate Transit Bus (route 4 I think?). We used the bus the entire time we were there - so convenient!
Rusty - Thanks for sharing your place with us. It was a great experience for us!
We really enjoyed our stay at the cottage amongst the tall trees in Mill Valley. It had a great central location , 5 minutes to Sausalito, Larkspur, and downtown Mill Valley which is charming. 25 minute drive to San Francisco.
The bed was very comfortable, there were good quality linens and towels which are important to me. Nicely decorated with beautiful hardwood floors. It was great to be able to make breakfast every day and the washer and dryer are full size and brand new. Good selection of pots and pans for cooking, attractive dinnerware. Cute office which my husband used. Carport parking for two cars.
Negatives- the TV in the living room was very small and should be updated. There is no dishwasher. The exterior of the house needs updating, new siding. The exterior does not match the very nice interior.
Overall it was a very good experience and we would definitely consider staying at the cottage again.
This charming cottage is stocked with all the basic amenities and is beautifully situated in a quiet neighborhood amidst towering redwoods. It is close to Muir Woods or the ferry in Sausalito, for a beautiful ride across San Francisco Bay to Fisherman's Wharf. The furniture is comfortable, the cottage is clean--a lovely place for either a quiet vacation or to explore nearby restaurants and shopping.
Clean, nice space, great amenities, very comfortable and it presents a treehouse like feel. A very luxurious treehouse that is.
Patti & I enjoyed our stay very much and are eager to return.
Marin County just north of San Francisco, is filled with quaint towns and beautiful scenery. The giant redwoods of Muir Woods are a 'must see', both majestic and humbling, and right over the hill from the cottage. Mill Valley has a film festival every October featuring international filmmakers and their work. There are also a number of small coffee houses, art galleries, restaurants and boutiques in town. For entertainment, the Throckmorton Theater has a variety of live music, plays, and comedy. Also Sweetwater is a club which features a variety of musical acts. The towns of Mill Valley and Sausalito are unique but quite different from each other. There are several state and national recreation areas nearby featuring world renowned hiking and mountain biking. Pt. Reyes National Seashore features oyster farms where you can sit outside and picnic and barbecue your own oysters. Close by San Francisco has everything one of the world's great cities can offer; museums, galleries, shopping, historic sites, world-renowned restaurants, parks, breathtaking views and much more! Also close, via a short beautiful drive, are Napa, Sonoma and Mendocino Valleys featuring world class wineries. For those who love the water, you can rent kayaks and paddle San Francisco Bay or rent a sail boat. Walking across the Golden Gate Bridge with it's incredible panorama of San Francisco is an incredible experience. A short walk down from the cottage and you are on a walking and bike path through a picturesque wetland which is part of San Francisco Bay. There is also a small spa within walking distance where you can take a hot tub and get a massage. There is also a horseback riding stable located in Tennessee Valley and less than 3 miles from the cottage.
