About Rusty

My family has been in the Bay Area for generations and survived the San Francisco earthquake in 1906. My grandmother owned a cottage on Mt. Tamalpais in the 1920's. My father helped put up some of the original hiking trail signs on the mountain. I came back to Mill Valley when I was working as a CNN correspondent in San Francisco. I've traveled all over the world and Mill Valley is one of the most wonderful spots on earth.

Rusty purchased this cottage in 1995

Why Rusty chose Mill Valley

Mill Valley is so close to one of the world's great cities, has numerous great restaurants and charm, yet it's minutes to be on hiking trails with gorgeous views and no one around. Trips to the wine country in Napa and Sonoma Valleys are 40 minutes away. This is the cottage on the property of my main house but is separated by trees, stairs and a deck. Because there are two redwoods just feet from the windows and small deck, you feel like you are in a tree-house. But there are many windows and LOTS of light. It feels very private yet, so close to everything by walking or by car.

There is also a small spa walking distance down the hill where you can get a massage.

Mill Valley has a film festival every October featuring international filmakers and their work. There are also a number of small coffee houses, art galleries and boutiques in town. For entertainment, the Throckmorton Theater has a variety of music, plays, and comedy. Also Sweetwater is a club which features a variety of musical acts. Nearby is the Green Gulch Farm, a Buddhist retreat featuring classes and organic produce.

Sausalito is only a couple miles away and you can walk or drive to this charming town right on San Francisco Bay which is very European in feel. There is also a great art festival there every September.

There are several state and federal recreation areas for hikers and bikers within ten miles of Mill Valley. Not only is there Muir Woods, with it's gorgeous huge redwoods, but Mt. Tamalpais where some of the first mountain bikes were designed to ride on the fire trails. Stinson Beach and Muir Beach are both quaint beach towns just over the hill from Mill Valley.

What makes this cottage unique

I fell in love with the property because it was SO close to where I worked in San Francisco, yet I felt like I was miles away from the rest of the world. The cottage is very private and quiet with soaring redwoods outside, yet lots of windows make it very light and cheery.

Great cottage!

  • 5 of 5

The location is excellent - close to the 101, downtown Mill Valley is a 5 min drive and there is a walk and bike trail very close as well. The cottage is very comfortable and bright, nice bed with soft sheets and nice touches like spices and coffee. A good home feel. Highly recommended!

Wish I was there....

  • 5 of 5

The owner Rusty is very accommodating and on top of things.

I rented the Cottage for my wife and I to attend a Mill Valley wedding.

Unfortunately for me, I came down with bronchitis and had to stay home. However, my wife and daughter had a great time. They loved the charm of the place and it's location. They both recommend it highly.

Maybe next time for me!

Love this adorable cottage

  • 5 of 5

Before arriving at this adorable cottage in Mill Valley, we were wishing we had actually reserved a location inside San Francisco. I am thrilled we did not make that mistake. We loved the cottage and it was perfect for our needs. We loved having a washer and dryer since this was one stop of a three week trip. The cottage is tastefully decorated, quiet, clean, and the bed was very comfortable. The only thing I personally missed was having a TV in the bedroom. The location turned out to be great. We only crossed the Bay bridge twice into San Francisco over our 5 night stay. I had failed to research the toll for the bridge, but it was an easy fix once I knew I needed to do an online account to pay tolls. It only takes about 15 minutes to get into the city depending on the time of day. If we are ever in the area again, we would want to stay here again.

Wonderful stay!

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed the cottage in Mill Valley. It is located right off Hwy 101 and easy to cross the Golden Gate to San Francisco or to go north to wine country. It's also really close to Muir Woods and Sausalito.

Mill Valley is a very nice town with lots of great restaurants and beautifully set in the shadow of Mt. Tama. We felt like we were truly on vacation even though the city was just a short distance away.

The kitchen was well stocked and the extra office space was nice to help spread out. Rusty was a great host and answered all my questions. He also had a lot of great instructions on how to use everything in the cottage and restaurant suggestions in the area.

If you are looking for a quiet place to stay outside the city the place is it!

Nice place to stay but didn't care much for Mill Valley

  • 4 of 5

The downtown area was more appealing but the area near the home was not very enticing.

We originally had a VRBO place to stay in Sausalito but there was a booking issue with the owner as she had promised the place to family the days we needed . We thought Mill Valley would be very similar to Sausalito but it was much more rundown with no acccess to any water and seaside type walks. The main roads were all under major construction.

The home itself was comfortable and had what we needed. The heater could use some maintenance as it banged and clicked quite loudly.

There really was very little to do in the Mill Valley, though we did get tickets to a wonderful performance at the Throckmorton Theatre of Yale's acclaimed acapella men's group... amazing singing and very funny.

We went to Muir Woods National Monument which did not disappoint. A day trip into Sausalito was lovely as well.

Marin County just north of San Francisco, is filled with quaint towns and beautiful scenery. The giant redwoods of Muir Woods are a 'must see', both majestic and humbling, and right over the hill from the cottage. Mill Valley has a film festival every October featuring international filmmakers and their work. There are also a number of small coffee houses, art galleries, restaurants and boutiques in town. For entertainment, the Throckmorton Theater has a variety of live music, plays, and comedy. Also Sweetwater is a club which features a variety of musical acts. The towns of Mill Valley and Sausalito are unique but quite different from each other. There are several state and national recreation areas nearby featuring world renowned hiking and mountain biking. Pt. Reyes National Seashore features oyster farms where you can sit outside and picnic and barbecue your own oysters. Close by San Francisco has everything one of the world's great cities can offer; museums, galleries, shopping, historic sites, world-renowned restaurants, parks, breathtaking views and much more! Also close, via a short beautiful drive, are Napa, Sonoma and Mendocino Valleys featuring world class wineries. For those who love the water, you can rent kayaks and paddle San Francisco Bay or rent a sail boat. Walking across the Golden Gate Bridge with it's incredible panorama of San Francisco is an incredible experience. A short walk down from the cottage and you are on a walking and bike path through a picturesque wetland which is part of San Francisco Bay. There is also a small spa within walking distance where you can take a hot tub and get a massage. There is also a horseback riding stable located in Tennessee Valley and less than 3 miles from the cottage.
