Photos and Description of this 1 bedroom holiday cottage in Wailuku - Maui Beach House, private

Brand new, spacious, airy cottage across from beach, great views, yet private

Permit Number: BBWK2014-0001

Hawaii TAT # W40850386-01

We have passed rigorous inspections for your health and safety.

Now with air-conditioning! And now with Direct TV!

Escape the traffic and the touristy areas yet be right on the ocean watching sunrises and moon rises over the ocean, surfers, whales, windsurfers and kite surfers. Our location is central to all the places you will want to go and we are at your service to share our knowledge and love of Maui. We offer guests a chance to join our local friends at our BBQs or to join us for a swim in our favorite spots in Iao Valley, just a short drive away. Guests can also choose to just do their own thing or to book a more extensive tour with us. It's totally up to you.

The Space

Our two-year-old cottage has all brand new appliances, bed, bedding, pillows, towels, etc. Sliding mirrored doors separate the bedroom from main room. The cottage sits on the ocean below our upscale neighborhood and your only neighbor is a doctor on one side and us up the hill behind in the home we bought in 1999.

My husband and I stayed there a couple of nights to check it out and make sure it is homey. The bed is so comfortable -- Serta mattress, plush mattress pad and new all-cotton sheets quilt and shams are wonderful!

As much privacy or socialization as you like -- I stock it with coffee, tea and condiments and bread, bagels and butter in the freezer to get you started on breakfast. We provide you with snorkel gear, beach chairs, coolers, etc. and give you tips on good things to do and things to avoid.

Separate bedroom and bathroom has 2 doors so there is privacy if one person wants to sleep and the other stay up or get up. Plenty of room for two or for a family with a child who can sleep in a crib (available to rent from No Ka Oi Baby Rentals) or on the couch.

We can also refer you to friends who will give you local rates on activities such as water sports, downhill biking, used car rental and art gallery. We can give you each 3 day passes to the YMCA for classes, weights, racquetball or pool.

The area we are in is called 'Central Maui' because you can easily drive to everywhere else. Yet our particular location feels more like country with open beach and ocean in front and to the north. Be aware that there is no commercial business within walking distance but the beach and a golf course are there for pleasure walking!

Guest Access

Anywhere on the property.

Interaction with Guests

As much or as little as you like.

The Neighborhood

Our neighborhood is upscale, our neighbors really friendly owners -- we often have BBQs here with them and always include our guests if they'd like to join us. The beach is right across the road in front of the cottage and when the surf is big, it's great to watch the surfers there. When there's no surf, the beach is empty. We love it both ways! It's not a swimming beach but those are a short drive away and by staying here, one avoids the touristy, hot, dusty surroundings of the beach cities

Getting around

We have a bus system and Jordan and I can drop guests off on our way places but a car really is recommended as only tour buses go up into the valleys and up to the top of Haleakala.

Other Things to Note

We stayed in a B & B years ago in Switzerland and the women treated us like family and it had such an impact on us that we try to do the same and make our guests feel at home. On the other hand, you may want to just do your own thing and that's perfectly fine, too.

About gail nagasako

Jordan was born and raised in Lahaina and comes from a well-known and highly respected family. His grandparents immigrated here from Japan. He went to University of Hawaii for 3 and a half years and has traveled extensively in the South Pacific. He and his wife also traveled England, Sweden and Europe and a half-dozen US states. He was owner of a highly successful fish wholesale business and knows just about everything there is to know about the ocean and the things that live there and the things you can do in and on it. He’s a happy-go-lucky guy who is game to do just about anything on a moment’s notice.

Gail was born and raised in Michigan. After graduating from the University of Michigan, she fulfilled a childhood dream by moving to Hawaii. She is the founder of H.A.P.P.Y., a social and networking group for homeschoolers. As such, she planned social events, offered crafts and field trips., She still counsels families interested in homeschooling and is the author of "Homeschooling: Why and How" and "Real L.I.F.E. Parenting." She is a writer, speaker, and artist.

Both Jordan and Gail are veteran Red Cross volunteers and should anything happen on Maui, you will be in good hands.

We have been married for 37 years and have a son, Thumper (Yes, that’s his real name), a retired professional rollerblader, having been in the top ten worldwide his entire career. He competed in such renowned contests as X-Games and Gravity Games. He is the highest rated videographer/editor in Hawaii, having All-Five-Star reviews and participates in a multitude of sports.

gail nagasako purchased this cottage in 1999

Why gail nagasako chose Maui

Before we bought this house 15 years ago, I asked my family where they most wanted to live and we all said this subdivision. It's like country but not so wet as Haiku, which can be moldy, nor so hot and dusty and crowded as Kihei and Lahaina, and not so far and cold as Makawao and Kula. We love the feel of being private and quiet and yet so close to everything commercial, the parks, the Maui Arts and Cultural Center, the hospital, the YMCA, the malls, good restaurants and our favorite: Iao Valley where we go for short or long hikes and swims in the cool clean river pools. We didn't want to downsize so we built the cottage last year so we'd have a bit of income so we could continue living in this heavenly spot.

What makes this cottage unique

We pride ourselves in giving the personal touch. We offer our guests a chance to mix with locals at our BBQs, or to join us for a swim in our favorite spots. And if they want to remain totally on their own we respect that as well.

Fresh air, beach ambiance, not touristy, views of sunrises and moon rises and whales playing (December through March) and surfers, stand up paddlers, and an endless source of driftwood for our fire pits.

Perfect Private Cottage on Maui

  • 5 of 5

An amazing, private place to stay with helpful owners. The cottage is stocked with everything you could ever want and more. It is very clean with lots of useful guide books and information from the owners. The location was perfect for exploring the island. It was shame that we missed the beautiful sunrises due to bad weather - the cottage would have been perfect to view them. All the more reason to return again in the future! We can't wait!!

Owner's Response: Hi Fiona & Jason, Yes, the one thing we can't deliver is great weather! Though with all the micro-climates one can pretty much always find sunshine, if not a sunrise. I hope you had a pleasant, if very long, trip back home and are enjoying what must be wonderful fall colors there. Do come back for our sunrises and moon rises. And the whales in the winter. Aloha, Gail & Jordan

A wonderful place to stay while on Maui

  • 5 of 5

My wife, and I, stayed in the cottage as part of a celebration for my retirement. The cottage was a wonderful place to stay. The owners are very engaged in making sure our experience was the best it could be. We found the resources provided to us by the owners to be MOST useful. We used a LOT of their information provided by the hosts. Their recommendations and their cautions were an essential part of our planning our activities. I found their recommendations to be better than any other sources available on the internet. We used recommendations provided for activities to The Road To Hana, The Discovery of Lanai, and even the recommendation to buy a long sleeve shirt with rash protection that can be used outdoors and in the water. We used their discount to purchase food supplies at the local grocery as well. '

The cottage is clean, well stocked, private, pleasant and it has a great view. The ocean is literally 50 yards away, just across the street. The view out the windows is full of ocean waves. It has a good clean bathroom, shower, washer/dryer that work well, a comfortable bed, Direct TV. Many needed supplies are available such as condiments, shampoos, body wash and a fully stocked kitchen.

We have already discussed coming back to Maui and will plan on staying here again, if it is available.

I would recommend this lodging to anyone.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your detailed review and I really appreciate that you found the accommodations so good and my recommendations so helpful. I can imagine the Road to Hana was a bit treacherous after the big storm we had two weeks ago. 'Iao Valley was ravaged and will be closed indefinitely while they repair torn up parking lots and cart away debris. They are calling it the 500 year flood! I'm actually surprised the Road to Hana survived it! Congratulations on your retirement and we hope you enjoy yours as much as we are enjoying ours -- so nice to not miss special opportunities that come up because of work! Enjoy Kauai and hope you get up to Kokee....there are some really nice short hikes up there and a breath-taking view into Kalalau. A hui hou!

A nice place to call "home"

  • 5 of 5

Just stayed in this cozy cottage for a week and loved it! It's private, clean and well stocked with everything you could possibly need. We used the beach chairs, boogie boards, noodles, cooler and beach towels. It was such a treat to be supplied with coffee, fresh fruit, bagels, condiments and seasonings. The ocean view and sunrises are lovely from the deck. We did not find the street between to be an issue at all and in fact enjoyed a stroll each morning down toward the golf course. We found this location to be very convenient to everything we like to do all over Maui. The hosts are a wealth of information, nearby should you need anything, yet totally respectful of your privacy. We would stay here again in a heartbeat!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your nice review. I especially like the heading as we have tried to make the cottage a real "home away from home" so that visitors can spend minimum time shopping and maximum time enjoying our beautiful island. So glad you enjoyed the stroll down the road. Jordan and I like to walk down there before bed and sit on the big log facing the ocean. In fact, last night I thought I ought to add that to my list of things to do. So peaceful and a perfect way to wind down before sleep. Or to enjoy watching the waves during the day. Hope you had a pleasant trip home and that we will see you again. A hui hou!

Perfect for Us

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay. Gail and Jordan are great hosts - available when we needed them but never intrusive. The cottage is simple, well laid out, and clean. The location is great with a nice deck to watch the surf and surfers. If you want a small cottage with a view on the other side of the island this is the place. We would definitely return here. Our last day it was really stormy and Gail suggested we check out the waterfalls in the Iao Valley that hadn't been seen for years - they were magnificent! Thank you, Gail.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind review and we are SO glad you got up to 'Iao that day and that we did, too. The entire valley is now closed except for residents and they suffered a lot of flood damage. We are anxious to get up there and see what has happened to our favorite swimming spots. Thanks, too, for getting the towels started and for the goodies you left behind :-) And the note in the book about it being a perfect spot to chill after the craziness of the destination wedding. Best wishes to you two and to the newlyweds! Aloha, Gail & Jordan

My husband and I had a great time in Maui, the house is very nice and owner are very kind.

There is everything available that we need. There is no hotel will provide those condiments for their guests. My husband and I want to go back to Maui again, and that is the place we want to live again.

Owner's Response: Thank you, Roger and Helen, for your gracious review. We hope you will come back again, maybe during whale season to get away from those harsh Midwestern winters that we know only too well! But have a wonderful autumn -- that season in the Midwest is hard to beat anywhere! Aloha, Gail & Jordan

there are lots of things to love about Beach House!

  • 5 of 5

after having been on the road for about 24 hours, the first thing that struck me when we walked in the door was the smell of fresh pineapple and seeing the macadamia treats left out for us! ... and the following morning I saw all the other goodies: bagels, cream cheese, strawberry preserves, butter, guava drinks and bananas, and there was ample sugar and scott towels and spices and laundry detergent (we did lots of laundry!)... we also appreciated the points card for sack 'n save (we sacked a lot and saved A LOT!)... the owners have obviously put a great deal of thought into preparing their rental so that guests feel welcome, and I've never ever ever received an email a week before our arrival reminding us not to pack too much in our luggage! Gail and Jordan are very generous and concientious, and every single day, we got the feeling that they wanted nothing more than for us to have a good time... we've never felt more welcome anywhere, even though we didn't even meet them face to face until our 11th day there, the day of our departure... other things I absolutely loved: the binder with all the great fact sheets (restaurants, hiking, beaches, etc.), the clearly-marked light switches, the really comfortable bed and pillows, the soft towels (lots) and sheets and the wonderful hair products (I bought some of the same shampoo and conditionner to bring back home), the pineapple lamps in the bedroom (wish we could have found similar ones for sale somewhere), the books (as a librarian, I'm always happy to see a guest library), the artwork, the number of TV channels (although we mostly watched the Olympics), the view of the ocean... the owners have really thought of everything! there are even anti-slip strips on the outside stairs! and one of the best things is THE LOCATION! arriving in the evening after nightfall, we had no problem finding the rental (thank you, Gail, for your precise directions!) -- we were probably in the best location on the island -- we went to the west coast by the north shore road AND by the more travelled southern road, we hiked and went to beaches throughout the island, we travelled the road to Hana via the Piilani Highway (our hosts' suggestion, and we were not disappointed!), we hiked the Haleakala crater, lunched at Mama's Fish House and stopped at Paia for souvenirs... we came back every evening after a full day of activities to a quiet, cosy, comfortable refuge. Truly, I can't recommend Beach House highly enough! thank you again!

Owner's Response: Hi Lisa & Christophe, Thank you so much for your stellar review. It sure made my day. You are right, we have put a lot of thought into stocking the cottage. It has become a game of sorts, trying to have it so fully stocked that guests will find everything they'd ever need. And we really do love sharing our location. Before we lived here, I asked my family where they would want to live if they could live anywhere on the island and we all said here. Lucky we found this property and we're so happy to share it with others. You two really made the most of your time here and saw and did everything and still had time to relax! We get real pleasure out of seeing our guests enjoy our Maui beauty and activities. And thank you for giving us a head start on cleaning by putting the towels in the washing machine!! Enjoy the rest of your summer! Aloha, Gail & Jordan

Enjoy peace, quiet and privacy when home, yet have an easy drive to all the wonders of Maui. What I love is being able to watch sunrises and then go to Kihei (20 minutes) or Lahaina (35 minutes) for a sunset picnic and come home again to our country-feel area. We almost always have Tradewinds coming right off the ocean so the air is some of the cleanest on the planet.
