Mountain Walks Retreat for Individuals, Groups, or Families.

Bedrooms 3
Space 1,375 sq ft
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 1 - 4 nights

About the property

Situated in the spectacular Dartry mountains, Glenade, County Leitrim, this cottage is a perfect quiet retreat for hill-walkers and sightseers alike. As local Irish owners, we provide a unique guide to the area that will allow you to make the most of every moment of your vacation.

The cottage is spacious and charming comprising of an original stone building with a modern extension. It has a living room; fully fitted kitchen/diner with all amenities and a dining table that easily seats eight; three double bedrooms (one en-suite); two bathrooms - a shower in each; and oil central heating with a cosy solid fuel stove to supplement.

From the cottage itself are beautiful mountain views that change hourly as sun, mist and moonlight shift across the valley. You can choose from a short stroll down the lane to tougher hikes up the mountain, and anything between. The mountain peaks to challenge you are Benbulbin, Benwhiskin, and Trusk More each with pathways of varying ease and difficulty and all with spectacular summit views.

This is the heart of ‘Yeats Country’ with easy access via car to Sligo, Yeats grave, and Lissadel House. Nearby attractions also include Glencar lake and valley; Queenmaebh burial site (Knocknarae, Sligo); Manorhamilton village (with traditional music); Bundoran coastal town (with beautiful cliff walks and beach); Sligo town; and Donegal Town & castle.

Other attractions, within day-trip range, include Slieve League Cliffs (Donegal - highest cliffs in Europe and utterly spectacular, 80min ); historic City of Derry (Northern Ireland, 90min); Marble Arch Caves (Enniskillen, 50min); and The Giant’s Causeway (Bushmills, 130min).

This area of Ireland is unspoilt countryside with considerably fewer tourists than Kerry/Killarney. Historically, because of the (now ended) ‘troubles’ in Northern Ireland, areas north of Galway and Dublin have not been promoted by the Irish Tourist Board. This area is EQUALLY if not MORE beautiful than its southern counterparts and much more economical! In Leitrim, Donegal, Sligo and their neighboring counties you’ll have a vacation to remember without cleaning out your bank account.

We use the cottage as our family cabin most of the year and our children love it. They love the stream in the garden, climbing trees and getting (very) muddy and wet as they explore the countryside. The cabin is equipped with books, games, and movies. Within three miles is the coastal town of Bundoran with a beach, cliff diving board, and various water sport camps for adults and children. Bundoran also has a Fun Fair and an indoor water park (for rainy days).

You can book via this website. Click 'request to Book' and provide a little information about your group and travels and we'll respond within 24 hours. The website will charge a fee in addition to the cottage fee so follow their process to see what that is. They also offer other extras which, in our opinion, is not necessary for a normal visit with normal use but it's up to you :-)

About Amanda

The property has been in our family for generations. It was, originally, the home of our great-uncle. It is well maintained year round because of our frequent visits with children and grandchildren. As a result it feels more like a home than a vacation property.

Amanda purchased this cottage in 1880

A Peaceful Retreat

  • 4 of 5

My family very much enjoyed the peace and quiet of the cottage during our recent stay. It was secluded enough to recharge in, yet still within a comfortable driving distance to Sligo, Bundoran and Donegal. The cottage was well equipped and Adele was quick to respond to questions and issues and ensured that our stay was as comfortable as possible. Our children enjoyed the selection of movies and games and we all enjoyed curling up by the fire on rainy evenings.

Beautiful views!

  • 4 of 5

Very quiet cottage in a peace setting. Enjoyed the sounds of sheep nearby. Felt like staying in a family cottage. Owner and family were helpful. Cottage has games and movies to use. A dishwasher and outdoor furniture would make the stay more enjoyable.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for the review Brenda. So glad you enjoyed the cottage. You were so lucky to be there when there was a heat wave - very unusual in Ireland for May! Our last set of outdoor furniture was destroyed in a storm. It really is nice to be able to eat outside and enjoy the view so we'll definitely get more organized for this summer. No plans for a dishwasher though! My mother used to say "I've got seven of them." (meaning her children). We say the same to the kids and grand-kids when we're there!! But who knows, maybe one day. :-) Very best for your future travels and you're always welcome back to Ireland & the cottage, Amanda

Secluded and peaceful in a dramatically beautiful location

  • 5 of 5

My husband & I spent a lovely 6 weeks in the cottage. We were surrounded by beautiful mountains, a stream and peaceful pastures. Amanda & and her sister Adele were very accommodating and helpful, telling us about walks and things to do in the area, as well as making sure we were comfortable and well. They quickly responded when I told them the cafetiere was not working & replaced with a new one. The house is comfortable, with a large kitchen area and 2 full baths. I never lacked kitchen equipment to make our meals. I loved that the cottage is so close to both Donegal & Sligo. The closest village, Kinlough, has all the basic amenities, and a good pub to watch football! I recommend!

Owner's Response: Thanks Trevor for being such wonderful guests at the cottage. We're so very glad that you enjoyed it and that it was a good place from which to explore the beauty of Ireland. I must apologies for the '4 stars' in the review of you as guests - it was because I did it from my phone and the screen was so small I made an error - it was meant to be five stars. I've tried to fix it since but it seems to be unchangeable. Apologies again but you were perfect guests! Very best to you and your wonderful family for the future! Amanda

Wonderful rural get-away

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time at this rural cottage with breathtaking views in every direction. Amanda was a wonderful host, explaining the particulars of the heating system and the wood stove that was available to supplement. She also directed us to some special nearby walks that were delightful. We ate our meals here and had everything we needed. Thanks to her for sharing her place with us!
