Castello del Duca, also known in the past as Casale della Marciliana (or Marcigliana), is an ancient fortified hamlet that dates back to the Middle Ages. It stands on a hill on the outskirts of Rome in a dominant position and enjoys enchanting views. On one side we see the Marcigliana Nature Reserve, which is part of the estate, and on the other we see the beautiful Roman countryside across the Tiber plain as far as the Monti Reatini.
Despite being surrounded by a beautiful estate of about 700 acres, Castello del Duca is located just 15 km from the centre of Rome. It is connected to the centre of the city by means of the Via Salaria and the railway line Settebagni-Roma Tiburtina-Fiumicino Airport. The Settebagni station is less than 10 minutes walk from Castello del Duca, where there is a train every 15 minutes which reaches downtown in about 30 minutes and Fiumicino Airport in just 1 hour.
The village of Settebagni, which is less than a 5 minutes walk away, is extremely safe and you can easily purchase most of the things you may need at two supermarkets and various local shops.
Within the estate of Castello del Duca, you can take long walks on the huge property which includes fields, oak and pine woods and olive groves.
The apartment was exactly as described. Fabio met us at the property and showed us everything and how to operate them. The best thing was that there were heaters and he didn't tell us we had to restrict our use of them. Being from a very warm climate in the US, being in a cold country and told you can't use the heat is pretty disturbing. But Fabio told us to just turn it up to whatever we wanted to. So when we left to go out for the day, we made sure to turn it off while we were gone, so not to waste the gas. This did lead to one problem, as somehow we turned it off completely and couldn't get it to turn back on. We had to call Fabio late on a Sunday night, but he showed up and fixed it within just a few minutes of being there and all was well. Great customer service. It seemed to me that whoever set this apartment up set it up as if they where going to be there themselves, it had all the little things that some others did not have, those little touches that make it comfortable, those things you have at home but forget to take when you travel. The bed was comfortable we slept very well. The property was clean and well maintained. The construction is apparently quite good as well, we just rolled with the earthquake that rocked the country at 6.6 on the riker scale. I would recommend this property, especially for couples. It is close to Rome by train or car. The only drawback is that the last train back is early (11:00 PM) so you have to get a cab from the station (I think it was around 30E). Driving in Rome is a treat all it's own, parking yet another one!! We just parked and hoped for the best. We didn't get a ticket in Rome, but we did in Florence. That was the only problem because Rome is open late, you don't want to leave. To have to catch that 11:00 PM train makes you feel like you are missing part of your time there and the parking issue is just that an issue. The apartment is great though. The drive to the airport was not long from there either, less than an hour. Thank goodness for that as, we thought our plane took off at 10:00 AM but found out at 5:30 AM that it took off at 8:30 AM and had to take off out of there over an hour earlier than we had planned to. Sorry for the mess we left Fabio. Thanks for a great place to stay. I would stay there again.
The apartment was a good size and well equipped with only minor issues (which did become more annoying as the stay progressed). The bathroom is in need of renovation; in particular the shower handle and head were completely broken meaning the shower was more like a hose. Secondly the air conditioning did not work. There were fans/air purifiers provided but this was not adequate. The meshes on the windows were not secure so we did not want to open the windows. We gave it 4 stars but the issues made it a bit scruffy and potentially nearer 3
Fabio was very helpful and actually upgraded us to his larger apartment next door to the one we original booked. It was awesome! It was spacious, beautifully appointed and clean. The grounds were beautiful and
made us feel like we were in the Tuscany country side, even though we were only 20 minutes by train from the center of Rome.
The only negative was there were no screens on the door or windows so mosquitos were an issue. Also, if you are driving, parking is a little tight.
Over all, it was the coolest place we have stayed in Rome and I would highly recommend it. We will be sure to return next time we're in Rome.
Beautifully located, very clean and quiet apartment; the property manager was very helpful and easy to communicate with by email both before and during our stay. The rooms were spacious and well-appointed, and we appreciated the historical construction details which have been preserved on this old estate. We enjoyed walking to the little grocery store in the village and taking the short train ride into the city center. After the hustle and bustle of sight-seeing in Rome, it was a welcome change of pace to return to our apartment in the evening. All in all, our favorite place to stay in our 5-country tour of Europe!
Beautiful estate in a very nice and quiet location. Clean apartment with some goodies provided. Fabio was very helpful and easy to communicate before and upon arrival. Spacious rooms, only watch out for your head in bed- and bathroom due to the beams. Only a 10 minute walk to the train station and not even 20 minutes to center of Roma.
We recommand this lovely place.
