Overview

About the property

2 Bed, 1 Bath at the foot of expansive mountain views

Lovely and comfortable adobe, stone and wood home in a remote location in Cochise Stronghold. Peaceful and quiet with exceptional hiking literally at your back door. The Cochise Stronghold Canyon (elev. 5,000 ft), is uniquely situated in secluded woodlands surrounded by granite boulders soaring 7,000 feet. Whether for casual hiking, climbing or bird watching, the cabin offers a comfortable and serene starting point. Two decks offer different views to relax and watch the wildlife and the stars.

The canyon is famously known as the final refuge (and resting place) of the great Chiricahua Apache Chief Cochise. This rugged natural fortress was, for some 15 years back in the 1860s, the home and base of operations for Cochise and his people.

Many wonders await you in the canyon - hiking interpretive trails, bird watching, traversing gentle boulders, climbing world-class cliffs, and incredible stargazing! There are miles of trails to explore the unique ecology and geology of the area. Here you can fill your days and evenings with the honest pleasures of life…you will feel as though you've stepped back in time to experience the enchantment of the Old West.

There is campground a quarter of a mile at the end of the road. There, interpretive trails take you amid the boulders and among the junipers and oaks. This canyon has few full-time residents. You may (if you're lucky) see one or two friendly neighbors walking or driving down the dirt road during the day but generally, the canyon is quite secluded and quiet.

You'll have full access to the comfortably decorated cabin, including two bedrooms (one queen, one full-size bed), living room with floor to ceiling rock fireplace (with comfortable and sleepable couch), modern kitchen, full bathroom and two patios from which to enjoy quite different views.

This is a perfect place to enjoy a short or extended getaway to truly benefit from nature's serenity. While we promise it may be difficult to leave the cabin, there are some very cool excursions within a 45-minute drive, including a drive to Bisbee (a quaint and now artsy former mining town), Kartchner Caverns (largest wet cavern in the U.S.), Tombstone (the famed “town too tough to die"), and lots of smaller ghost towns along the way.

The property is pet-friendly but it's not wise to let them run unattended. We ask that guests stay for a minimum of three nights to offset the cost of cleaning/maintaining the house. If you would like to stay for less than three nights, please send us a message, we'll get back to you.

There is Internet/Wifi access, a large flat-screen television with DVD player (no cable/satellite) and a great collection of movies, a few board games, and a small adult mountain bike to take jaunts down the trails.

There are two bedrooms, each containing a comfortable queen size bed. The master bedroom also has an ottoman that opens to a child/toddler sleeping mattress. The couch in the living room is one of the most favored sleeping areas. Additionally, there are comfortable bed cushions in the master closet that can serve as additional sleeping or resting areas.

About David Auerbach

I help manage the family cabin with my mother Christine. It's been in the family since the early 70's when our family owned a pistachio farm in the valley. The cabin has been a special place to us for many years and we're excited to share it!

David Auerbach purchased this cabin in 1974

Why David Auerbach chose Cochise

Unlike the surrounding areas, the stronghold canyon is a very different terrain and climate. Beautiful rock formations that you can stare at for hours while relaxing, and many nature watching opportunities. If you're a hiker, this is some of the best hiking and rock climbing in all of Arizona, right in the backyard of the cabin.

Cochise Cabin

  • 5 of 5

We stayed the whole month of Feb. The place was wonderful. Christine and David were very easy to work with. Both very accommodating. The cabin has everything you would need. The location is perfect. Great hiking, close to many Wineries and other points of interest. We just loved the whole experience there.

If I had a holodeck This is the program I would run on it.

Everything was just as we hoped if not better. It was the wrong time of year so the creek was not flowing so next time we will plan that better. And we will stay longer. We saw deer every day just walking down the street. Saw a skunk on the patio after sunset but he did not spray. He just walked away. It was great. Cannot say it better. And David is very responsive to any needs.

Oh and we both slept like babies. The beds were both so comfortable.

Beautiful Cabin in a Spectacular Canyon

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I (and our three dogs) thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this lovely cabin. It was clean, well equipped, and very cozy. The canyon is spectacular and the house is situated a good distance from a not-well-traveled road, meaning you can relax in complete privacy on the deck or patio. At night, it’s a stargazer’s paradise!
