About Gary Ornoff

Gary and Christine Ornoff

Gary Ornoff purchased this house in 2006

Why Gary Ornoff chose Gloucester

We fell in love with this house on a new years day drive in 2006! We thought we were going to see a small home in need of repair but instead we saw a wonderful place that has a personality all its own! Something about being away from the City lights really can do wonders for the soul! We have enjoyed the River House for several years now and hope you find it as relaxing as our family does!

Perfect weekend retreat!

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic weekend at the River House. We were amazed at the size of the house. The photos don't do it justice. We enjoyed the private beach and kayaking around the river. Our dog had an amazing time exploring the surrounding area. We also enjoyed a trip to Main Street, Gloucester visiting the quaint shops on a rainy day. Ware Neck Produce had some amazing fresh shrimp which we cooked in the large kitchen. Plenty of cooking utensils to cook a banquet if you wished. We also appreciated all the games, DVDs etc. The house is so well stocked. We'll need to go back to enjoy it all as we ran out of time. A week here would be great. Thanks for a great stay. We'll be back!

Nice home, could use some tweaks

  • 4 of 5

The home is spacious and comfortable. One mattress could use an upgrade. The kitchen is nice size, easy to cook your own meals. The sauce pans were unusable, though because of peeling tephlon. We went out and bought one to use. The baking sheets were only usable with foil.

We were a bit shocked to arrive to a note on the refrigerator that requested we wash, dry, fold, and put away all sheets and towels we use. Since we paid a rather large cleaning and service fee (making the stay closer to $200 a night!!), this seemed out of place. They have a lovely washer and dryer though.

We could not get two DVD players to work and ended up having to gather the kids in a bedroom to watch something. Not a big issue just inconvenient.

We were concerned about taking the trash out at the end of our trip knowing the dump would be closed on a holiday. Gary was happy to work it out with us.

Location to the river was great. Quiet end of the road. We loved having the kayaks to borrow. All in all a lovely stay. Just a couple little hassles that we’re noticeable.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the feedback and glad you enjoyed your stay. Many rentals do not offer towels and sheets in the price of your stay and we do provide them but ask to do your best to leave the property like you found it. I do agree it’s a little inconvenient to drive the trash a couple miles away but it’s one of the things to expect when enjoying a rural quiet get a way. Two of the mattresses were replaced this year along with comforters and we have plans to upgrade mattress toppers next week. Many other upgrades are in the works such as WiFi-new sitting chairs-DVD players-Cox Cable-Kitchen pots and pans. The 2000sf. home is such a value @ approx $175 night especially when comparing to the average hotel rate around $140 night. We are glad you had a nice time and thank you for the feedback! Hope to see you again in the near future!

Landscape and outside property was unmanaged. Having the renters to take trash to a trash dump, bad

  • 3 of 5

Inside property was acceptable. Trash removal was not available on Sunday. As a renter I felt it was not my responsibility to take trash to the dump . Coming from out of state this was a problem.

Owner's Response: We apologize and will speak to our property management team and find out why yard was not kept up, they have done a great job the last 2 years! As far as the trash goes it’s very clearly stated on the house rules “Do your best to have the trash removed and taken to the local dump, approx. 2 miles away they are closed on Sundays.” My housekeeper can take the trash to the dump on days where tenants cannot make it there. This is a county rule for the city of Gloucester Va does not have curbside pick up in this zip code.

ok stay

  • 3 of 5

Big home plenty of space. I hate to be crucial over small things!

Let me start with this… for the money it’s a good deal. With that said if small things were improved we would have had a better stay. Attention to details matter to me. A lot of the blinds were either broke or do not function, light bulbs in bathrooms, bed room burned out. Luckily I found some bulbs. Kitchen wares need to be replaced: old or not functional. Trash was a concern. We were down for a wedding and were packed up pretty good in the car. We were scheduled to leave on a Sunday. We didn’t know how we were going to take care of the trash because no trash pickup… directions were left to the dump but were closed on Sunday. I would imagine your cleaning company would take care of this.. beings no trash pickup. Communication was clear, and Gary was very responsive. Thanks for allowing us to use your home.

Great place for family getaway

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at this home. We've been to many other vacation rentals and I was very happy with how laid back this one felt. Not only in location and amenities but also in how it was working with Gary on details. Our kids really loved the boats and it was so nice to be able to get out there first thing in the morning!! We also explored a bit and were sent to Haven Beach outside of Mathews. Super secluded and clean beach we enjoyed before the tide took our spot away. Lol

We'd be happy to return in the future!
