Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday home in Youngsville - Casa del Rio

Exclusive site at the Waters Edge

'Breathtaking,' 'Fabulous,' 'Stellar,' 'Magical' - Casa del Rio, a unique southwestern home awaits those who seek a glimpse into what the West was like – before it was “won.”

Completed in April of 2014, Casa del Rio offers timeless views of the Rio Chama, Abiquiu Lake, Ghost Ranch - with no other habitation to confound the imagination. The house rests on a mesa about 100 feet above the narrowest part of the Rio Chama, just before it empties into Abiquiu Lake. Unique to this area, a private path winds its way directly to the water. Four circles of stones (tipi rings) found on the land are silent proof that these vistas have been enjoyed by people for hundreds of years.

Inside the 1500 square foot house you will find all the luxuries and amenities of the 21st century. An open floor plan includes great room, dining area and kitchen; all under hand-hewn vigas harvested from the San Juan forest. Leather couches, swivel chair, Taos-made furniture - all make it a pleasure to take in the ever changing landscape in any direction. (Be sure to catch the dawn when the morning light descends upon the water). Hand painted retablo and santos, Navaho and Zapotec rugs, prints by RC Gorman, and Georgia O'Keefe all enhance the experience of being immersed in the southwest.

The kitchen features granite countertops, energy saving appliances, and an island with cooktop. A 42” LED satellite TV, WiFi, and sound bar provide connection to the modern world. (for those who must) Soft foam, queen size mattresses, resort quality bedding ensure your night’s rest – so you can be prepared for your next day’s adventure...

Located in the heart of the Piedra Lumbre (Valley of the Shining Stones) Casa del Rio was designed for outdoor living. Covered portales on the east, north and west sides provide shade from the ever bright New Mexico sun. The concave shape of the house provides shelter from wind and wraps around an additional 800 square feet of a Colorado red flagstone courtyard. On the courtyard, or under the portal, you will find; a moveable chiminea (fireplace), a four burner gas grill, two lounge chairs, a love seat, and table and dining chairs for four.

To complete your Abiquiu experience there is an outdoor hot tub positioned for panoramic river and mountain views. For those who prefer, there is also a two-person, heart shaped bath. Full moon nights are are so bright you can see colors on the walls of the river canyon. On moonless nights the stars seem so close you could almost reach up and touch them...

The waters of Abiquiu provides an important resting place for migratory birds; a virtual oasis in a land of desert and mountains. Eagles, osprey, geese, and many other species take time to have their needs met on their way to other destinations. Perhaps this description may one day apply to you!

Why Gordon Hirsch chose New Mexico

A 15 minute drive from the highway, Casa Rio is situated at 'the end of the trail' leading to Abiquiu lake. When you look to the East, North, or West there is no sign of human habitation to distract the eye. The landscape has remained this way for millions of years.

Hollywood crews have been coming to this area for decades to shoot films requiring vivid scenery typical of the wild west. Some movies made in the area include: the Lone Ranger, Brothers, Silverado, Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull, No Country for Old Men, The Missing, Wyatt Earp, 3:10 to Yuma, Red Dawn, the Last Outlaw, and City Slickers.

What makes this house unique

It offers sensational, undisturbed views of the lake, river canyon, and mountains.

This is the only lakefront property with a private trail to Abiquiu Lake, opening up a whole new world to be discovered.

This is also a great 'base camp' for exploring more of northern New Mexico.

An ideal location for nature lovers, anglers, paddlers, astronomers, archaeologists, paleontologists, botanists, geologists, historians, birders, artists, writers, musicians, hikers - of all skill sets. This is an amazing place for anyone with a sense of wonder!

We loved our time in Abiquiu at Gordon's home. The view is spectacular. You can look up the Chama River or out to the lake. Definitely take advantage of the hot tub and watch the stars. The sky is so dark that you see stars like never before!

Owner's Response: Thank you, Jean, for your comments. I am glad you enjoyed observing the night sky from the hot tub. Being an original "city slicker" myself, I was astounded the first time I saw the Milky Way from Abiquiu - I thought the stars were so close that I might actually be able to jump up and touch them. You are great guests and I would be happy to have you again!

Absolutely Awesome

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay at Casa del Rio. The setting, the views, the home - everything was just as we remembered it from our first visit. We are anxious for our next visit.

The home is set high on a bluff above the Chama River just as it flows into Lake Abiquiu. You can see mountains in every direction, including those of Ghost Ranch. The crystal clear outdoor hot tub is a real treat - after dark on a clear night you can see stars like you've never seen before; or you can get up early and watch the sun rise while soaking in the tub.

The kitchen is well stocked with everything you need for preparing your own meals. We used the gas grill several times, even cooked our morning bacon on the grill (in a homemade aluminum foil tray). There was a supply of kitchen spices, coffee filters, napkins, paper towels, but some of that is stuff that previous renters have left behind.

Gordon, the owner, supplies plenty of towels, bedding, paper products etc. He has DirecTV with recording capability, a sound system, DVD player and a few DVDs to pick from. The wi-fi was always dependable, but being satellite, it's only enough bandwidth for basic things like email and web surfing. Even as remote as it is, our AT&T cell phones worked well.

The drive from the highway to the house is about 3-1/2 miles of fairly rough dirt/gravel/rocky road, but it does not require an SUV - any vehicle can drive on it; you just might drive a little slower with some vehicles. There are a number of turns and forks, but Gordon's instructions are right on. Our first drive in took us 45 minutes, but now that we are comfortable with the road, we do it in about 15 minutes.

There are lots of things to do around Abiquiu:

- Ghost Ranch - They have tours and there is some great hiking.

- Plaza Blanca - Hike it and photograph it. Beautiful white mountains.

- El Farolito's in El Rito - A great place to eat, less than 30 minutes from Abiquiu.

- Chaco Cultural Historical National Park - A great day trip. It is Indian ruins from around 1000-1100 AD. It's a 2-1/2 hour drive one way.

- The Monastery of Christ - a bit of drive that follows the Chama River, awesome scenery and the facility itself is so peaceful.

- Bode's Store in Abiquiu - they have a good supply of groceries (and gasoline).

But even with all that (and more) to do, just sitting back and relaxing at Casa del Rio tops the list.

Gordon is a great host and makes sure your stay is an unforgettable time.

Beautiful home with an incredible view..

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I truly enjoyed the peace and quiet here. Dark star filled sky's in the evening, and wondrous views, to have coffee over in the mornings. We enjoyed seeing the 3 mule deer bucks each evening! Abiqui is one of the most beautiful places we have ever been. We had an incredible visit. Thank you, Gordon.

Excellent property overlooking Abiquiu Lake

  • 5 of 5

This is a beautiful piece of property, both the Casa del Rio, overlooking Abiquiu lake and the grounds. We spent 4 days over Labor Day weekend, Sept 2016. Quiet and peaceful. The home is very well appointed. Everything you'll need. The kitchen is fully equipped. The TV and Wifi were excellent. The hot tub is conveniently located on the back patio. The property was very clean and well maintained. There's a foot path leading to the lake. It's about a 15 to 20 minute trip and about 4 miles from the main road to the Casa del Rio, which is at the end of the road. From the main road, it's another 15 minutes to Bodes General store. Bodes has odds and ends market items you may have forgotten, or need to restock, a small snack bar, burgers, burritos etc., with limited hours and a gas station. We spent most of our time relaxing during the day and astro photography at night from this dark sky location. We made a one day trip to Ghost Ranch on the far side of the lake about a 45 to 60 minute drive door to door. We recommend it as a short partial day trip. A number of Hollywood movies you’ll recognize have been filmed there. From the Casa you can see Ghost Ranch on the far side of the lake if you know where to look or use binoculars. Three miles as the crow flies across the lake. We never made it to Espanola, the closest town. I'd say about an hour from the Casa. Maybe next time. Gorden was an excellent host. He's readily accessible by email and cell phone if necessary. The listing well represents the property. The information he provided prior to the trip was excellent. Both sufficient and detailed. This was our second trip in a year to Abiquiu Lake. Now that we know about Gorden's Casa del Rio, we will definitely return there. Soon I hope. We highly recommend the property. We're from the Denver CO area, so it's about 6 to 6.5 hours door to door. Convenient for extended weekends.

Absolutely one-of-a-kind!!

  • 5 of 5

This is a magical place. The views are better than any of the pictures, and to watch the light change makes it all even better. We had a full moon while we were there and got to watch it rise in the East with the sunset, and set in the West the next morning over the lake! In addition, the home is beautiful. Very comfortable and clean, great kitchen, and everything in working order. You can tell the owners take good care of this very special home. Thank you for sharing it Gordon.
