At the end of a gated, quarter mile long driveway is our 1 and 1/2 story log home. Perched on the side of Levinseller mountain, this house faces due south and features a 4 season sun room that transitions to a covered wrap around porch. On top of the house, is an 8X8 tower that has windows on all 4 sides. For those not afraid of heights, you can step out on to a 4X8 deck and sit down to enjoy a view of the back side of the Camden hills, a sliver of Penobscot Bay, part of Lake Megunticook, Ragged Mtn, Hatchet Mtn, Moody Mtn, and our own Levinsellor pond. Which, by the way, is directly across the street from our driveway. It is clean and perfect for a dip on a hot summer day. At night, the tower is the perfect place to check out the stars.
When you enter the house, you step into the kitchen, which is fully equipped. Cooking is by gas stove. The washer and dryer are tucked into a pocket in the kitchen. The kitchen and dining room are open concept. Walking through the dining room, which seats 4 comfortably, your are looking through the sun room at the view. Turning the corner, you enter either the sunroom or the living room and see the cathedral ceiling and loft. There is satellite TV and a Blu-ray DVD player for entertainment (bring your own DVD's), and a Bose Cinemate system for enhanced sound. We also have Internet service and there is excellent cellphone reception. Off the living room is the master bedroom which features a queen size bed with quality linens, a ceiling fan, and private access to the 3/4 bath. There is also access to the bathroom from the kitchen. The second floor also has a 3/4 bathroom. The second bedroom upstairs also has a queen size bed with quality linens and a cozy sitting area that has a nice view of our perennial flower gardens. Off our wrap around porch,at the edge of the forest and our flower gardens, is our sundeck. You can sit with your first cup of coffee in the morning and soak in the view while enjoying the variety of birds visiting our multiple feeders. The hummingbirds are always enjoyable to watch at our feeders. You may see hawks or an eagle circling the pond. At night or in the morning, you will hear the loons calling. If you listen very carefully, you will also hear loons calling from a neighboring pond.
Camden, which is 12 minutes away from the house, is truly unique among Maine coastal towns in that the 'mountains meet the sea'. Mount Battie looms over the harbor and town and the base is a short walk from downtown. At the top, the view is one of coastal Maine's most stunning. There is a stone tower there that you can climb that gives a 360 degree view.
Downtown Camden has been consistently ranked as one of the most picturesque on the coast of Maine. A variety of shops to wander through, a picture perfect harbor that is homeport to several large Schooners that offer 2 hour excursions or up to 10 days. Camden library's amphitheater is a national historic landmark and across the street is a grassy hill overlooking the harbor.
The Camden Hills offer miles of hiking and biking and there are numerous lakes and ponds for kayaking or boating.
At the end of the day, you can return to the house and sit out on the porch, enjoy the light breeze, and relax while you plan your next day. It is perfect.
If you are looking for a place to stay in this area of Maine, book this place as soon as you can! It's been a few days since we left the property, and I am still thinking about how amazing it was. This is not your typical vacation rental. Doug has gone out of his way to make sure everything is perfect for you. This will feel like you have stepped into your own home, only likely nicer. There are plants and many decorative items in the house that will make you feel right at home.
The house is fully equipped - right down to most supplies. The washer and dryer made our trip that much easier as we were on an extended trip in areas of Maine. We had four adults in our party and we were more than comfortable. The place is much bigger than it looks in pictures. The porches and decks are all very nice. The tower on top allows for an even more amazing view, but is not for the faint of heart.
I cannot say enough about how wonderful Doug is to work with as well. He gave me all the information I could possibly need and answered questions. This house is an easy distance to travel to some of Maine's most famous attractions.
I cannot think of anything but positives! We will return if we are ever in Maine. In fact, this house alone may be a good reason to return.
We stayed in Doug's home for a week in September. We enjoyed his home, it is a beautiful setting, with a large well equipped kitchen, beds were comfortable, we ate our meals on the decks, taking in the beautiful views. It is a good location for visiting many locations in Maine.
There were 4 adults, we loved the house and would highly recommend it!
We (2couples) stayed in this very nice VRBO home. It is sitting up on a mountain side with a beautiful view. The home is built with beautiful wood and offers everything you need except food. A couple of things I will point out is; owner needs to make mention in his description that you cannot use the wood burning heater and that the house is not completely finished. We were getting ready to build a fire and just happen to write him just before we did. He said we couldn't use it. The "sunroom" needs finishing, maybe some kind of heat in there to be able to enjoy. We also wasn't able to buy several days of meats because his freezer was packed full so that made us have to go to store 3 times. Be careful of stairs. Very narrow going upstairs and out the back. Overall I would recommend this home for a nice get away.
Doug made sure we had good directions to the cabin. The driveway is absolutely doable in a sedan - no 4WD needed. The house is absolutely gorgeous, beautifully appointed and lovingly (and cleverly) built. There are gardens and bird feeders and quietude. There is a view to die for on the deck looking out over the mountains. It is hard to leave the view. I think we spent the morning sipping our coffee and tea, just looking out over the landscape. Should you need more perspective, the cupola and deck are a lot of fun to visit.
The Rileys go above and beyond by providing internet access and satellite TV. It's tempting to be away from all digital input, but it was Olympics time, and it's also nice to keep tabs on work if you need to.
I can only imagine fall at this spectacular property...
Belfast and Camden are both 20 minutes away, so food shopping is pretty easy. Hiking is all around. We did Maiden's Cliff and spent a lot of our time on Megunticook.
We would have no hesitation coming back to this home. The Rileys are wonderful, responsive hosts.
The cabin in the woods was absolutely beautiful. What a lovely vacation
Having so many amenities was a so great. Fully stocked kitchen was no exaggerated & not having to clean the last day of vacation was definitely a bonus.
Beds were very comfy. Bird watching was very entertaining.
Only negative would be not having a heads up on the driveway, fortunately we have a pick up truck to handle it.
Looking forward to returning to the cabin when the little projects are complete.
The Lookout was a little dangerous to get into
We are a retired couple who love to travel. This summer we chose Maine as a destination. We like to stay at places that have a beautiful view and this property definitely met that criteria. The porch provided wonderful views of the mountains and the sunsets were gorgeous. There were several bird feeders on the porch which attracted a number of different species of lovely birds. It was a very peaceful setting and a great place to relax with a glass of wine. The house was very well appointed and the kitchen had all the necessary items for cooking. The bed was quite comfortable as were the chairs and sofa. The house is a 15/20 minute drive from Camden so you are away from the amenities of the city. If you are considering a secluded property, this is it. Doug, the owner, called several days before we arrived to help us with things to do in the Camden area. He was very helpful and readily available throughout our visit.
