About Julian Baust

We are a family of four who have enjoyed many happy holidays in the area. We currently live and work in Bedfordshire but plan to spend as much time as we can at Iris cottage

Julian Baust purchased this cottage in 2013

Why Julian Baust chose Kingsbridge

We bought Iris to give us a home within the area that we have known and loved for over 50 years. The beauty of the South Hams is plain to all who visit, with it's rolling hills and fabulous coastline. Great for walks and for those who enjoy water sports and a range of other activities. The property benefits from a range of on site facilities set in beautiful grounds which cater for all weathers.

What makes this cottage unique

Stancombe is a wonderfully secluded, peaceful and calming place- but with lots of amenities and close to lots of wonderful countryside, beaches and eateries.

Great property, good, well maintained facilities both in the property itself, and on the site

  • 5 of 5

Really nice (remote) area. Kids loved the pool, the tennis courts, and the snooker room, particularly.

Compact and charming cottage

  • 4 of 5

Pretty semi-detached cottage set in the grounds on Stancombe Manor. All form part of a conversion with many small apartments and two cottages. Great to have the facilities of a lovely swimming pool and games room within the complex. Very quiet and peaceful area. Iris Cottage was an ideal base for touring South Devon and we were fortunate not to have snow as we would have struggled with our car on the nearby steep, single track roads. The accommodation is basic and cosy. There were 4 of us for several nights and we all felt that stretching it to 6 people would have been cramped. Probably fine during sunny weather as you would be outside more. Kitchen is well-equipped and showers were powerful. TV is small with a few stations and not the best picture although we are not massive TV viewers. A wardrobe in the upstairs bedroom would have been useful although there really isn’t room. We really enjoyed our stay as it was quiet and peaceful. No-one was next door until the last night when we could clearly hear them.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your feedback. We are glad that you enjoyed your stay with us. We will give some thought to the TV, which has not been raised before, but thank you. The property is semi detached so subject to whether next door is occupied. Not generally an issue out of season of course and always dependent on who is resident. It would be good to welcome you back when the sun is out ! Many thanks

Beautiful location for family holiday.

  • 4 of 5

4 adults and 2 young children. Weather was beautiful so had lots of time on the beach.

When we had one dull day we discovered there was much to do on site. Stancombe Manor has a pool which is great, games rooms which are fantastic and outdoor areas which are wonderful. Our 2 children (ages 5 and 3) had a ball.

Ian (caretaker) was most helpful and interesting with history of Stancombe Manor.

Only downside was on day of departure, the cleaners arrived early and put unnecessary

pressure on us to go.

Perfect piece of paradise

  • 5 of 5

We arrived on a sunny day, which always helps, but were here for a few rainy ones as well and with a dog and baby we had no shortage of things to do in all weathers. The cottage was clean and well stocked with the basic. The fridge is small but as long as you know that you can shop as needed. On the way to Slapton sand there is a great farm shop which does meat and fish on Friday and Saturdays plus all the other provisions and we had two tesco shops delivered. Although it is best to give them guidance of where they need to go when they arrive as it is not clear where the cottage is on the grounds. The games room has loads of things to keep young ones occupied and the pool was warm and we managed to get our 1 year old to start swimming (with a bit of support) changing facilities at the pool are not great for wriggly babies but we just took him down from the cottage wrapped in a towel. I think this place is perfect, remote enough to feel away from it all but still able to get things delivered including excellent Indian food (details on the folder in the cottage) and near enough to Kingsbridge to get anything you have forgotten. Loved it and we hope to be back soon!
