Our 1200 square foot, Log Cabin is nestled 9100 feet high in the Sangre De Christo Mountain range in the south-eastern part of Colorado. It is between Walsenburg and Alamosa on Highway 160, 90 miles north of Taos New Mexico. Many of our renters come from Texas, as this is the closest you can get to Texas and be in the mountains. About a ten hour drive from Dallas. 4-WHEEL DRIVE IS NEEDED FOR WINTER & SPRING ACCESS!!
Forbes Park is a private, gated neighborhood with only 200 homes on 13,000 acres. There is no hunting in the park, so you will find lots of deer, elk, turkey, bears, coyote, beaver, and smaller critters all over. ATV'S AND MOTORCYCLES ARE NOT PERMITTED ON THE GROUNDS. You will have beautiful views of 11,000 foot to 14,000 foot mountains nearby with amazing sunsets.
Our cabin is a non-smoking cabin. It has a comfy queen bed downstairs, and a king bed in the upstairs loft. The log-style furniture is of Aspen and Pine. The spacious kitchen is fully stocked (even with spices, condiments) with gas stove/oven, large refrigerator, microwave, as well as a washer and dryer. Outside, you will enjoy the hot tub on the front porch or beautiful sunsets on the large back deck! In wintertime the woodburning stove keeps the cabin warm while you can watch the Satellite TV or any of over 100 movies on VHS, we also have a TV on the min floor as well as one upstairs with a DVD player!
The park has lots of wildlife, and hiking. There is nearby fishing and hunting. Visit the Sand Dunes National Park, the picturesque towns of LaVeta and Cuchara, Taos, New Mexico, or explore further to historic mining towns such as Creed! Great snow skiing is 90 miles away in Taos (Red River) or 2 hours to Wolf Creek. Or stay in the park for cross-country skiing and sledding.
This is a great get-away for a long weekend or a week or more. Please see our rates below. Contact Kevin or Susan for more details.

Nice cabin. It lacked smoke detectors, fire extinguisher, as well as a co detector the is required by the state of Colorado. This was pointed out to the owner. He said he would have them installed. It's a shame that basic safety was not a priority! Wouldn't recommend staying until the required detectors and fire extinguisher were verified as being installed properly and in good working order.
This cabin was absolutely prefect in all the ways we imagined. We stayed 3 nights and it simply didn't feel long enough. The cabin was clean and comfortable as well as stocked with everything you might need minus food which was nice. We went to the grocery store on the way out of town and it was no issue to cook all of our meals and snacks. The wood stove kept us plenty warm and the beds are very comfortable. The hot tub is also a nice touch. We did get 18"of snow the day before we were leaving but it was nice to see that when we left at 8am the roads were plowed and had no issues getting out although 4x4 was needed. The owners were very kind and helpful also. This is a great place to just relax and it is family friendly. We are already looking at dates for a return trip this summer! Thank you for your hospitality!
saw an elk herd daily on wagon creek rd in forbes park. you'll surely visit zapata falls and the sand dunes, but bear lake near cuchara is another great spot. nice cabin, great location, excellent owners - highly recommend.
Wonderful escape to the mountains. Cabin is perfect in every way. So very comfortable. Relaxing in the hot tub under the stars every night was awesome. All that could be heard was the elk bugling and night owls hooting. The fall colors were amazing. Our little Sissy dog had a ball too. Truly a place you must experience! You will not be disappointed. Thank you Kevin and Susan for sharing your cabin.
Usually when I go on vacation I am always ready to get back home the last day or two. Staying in this cabin changed that. I could have stayed for another week. The setting of the cabin is so peaceful and beautiful. The wildlife is gorgeous. There is nothing better to me than in late June to be able to sit on the back porch with a sweatshirt on and watch the sun set behind a snowcapped mountain while drinking a glass of wine. That is true relaxation. The movie library was so much fun, the beds were really comfortable, the kitchen was equipped with anything you could possibly need, and the park was beautiful beyond my imagination! There are lots of things to do near the park for those that want an adventure, or its nice to just enjoy the park. Cuchara village and The Dog Bar and Grill was one of our favorite day adventures.
I want to go back! We had the best vacation ever with close family. A true retreat; a perfect vacation. Everything was blissful-a place I didn't want to leave and can't wait to go back to. A great place to be with family and make memories. We loved the cozy setting equipped with all of our favorite movies, views, and sightseeing. Zapata Falls, the Sand Dunes, and the Historic Cuchara Village are a short drive and must sees. Other than that, the house has everything you need for a much needed retreat. Thank you for having us!!
