Overview

About the property

Cabin, 2 Bedrooms + 1 bath - sleeps 6

Our 1200 square foot, Log Cabin is nestled 9100 feet high in the Sangre De Christo Mountain range in the south-eastern part of Colorado. It is between Walsenburg and Alamosa on Highway 160, 90 miles north of Taos New Mexico. Many of our renters come from Texas, as this is the closest you can get to Texas and be in the mountains. About a ten hour drive from Dallas. 4-WHEEL DRIVE IS NEEDED FOR WINTER & SPRING ACCESS!!

Forbes Park is a private, gated neighborhood with only 200 homes on 13,000 acres. There is no hunting in the park, so you will find lots of deer, elk, turkey, bears, coyote, beaver, and smaller critters all over. ATV'S AND MOTORCYCLES ARE NOT PERMITTED ON THE GROUNDS. You will have beautiful views of 11,000 foot to 14,000 foot mountains nearby with amazing sunsets.

Our cabin is a non-smoking cabin. We do NOT have wifi at our cabin. However, there is a community center in the park that has wifi. Cell service is a hit and miss. However, there is a landline at the cabin for emergencies.

It has a comfy queen bed downstairs, and a king bed in the upstairs loft. The log-style furniture is of Aspen and Pine. The spacious kitchen is fully stocked (even with spices, condiments) with gas stove/oven, large refrigerator, microwave, as well as a washer and dryer. Outside, you will enjoy the hot tub on the front porch or beautiful sunsets on the large back deck! In wintertime the woodburning stove keeps the cabin warm while you can watch the Satellite TV or any of over 100 movies on VHS, we also have a TV on the main floor as well as one upstairs with a DVD player!

The park has lots of wildlife, and hiking. There is nearby fishing and hunting. Visit the Sand Dunes National Park, the picturesque towns of LaVeta and Cuchara, Taos, New Mexico, or explore further to historic mining towns such as Creed! Great snow skiing is 90 miles away in Taos (Red River) or 2 hours to Wolf Creek. Or stay in the park for cross-country skiing and sledding.

This is a great get-away for a long weekend or a week or more. Please see our rates below. Contact Susan Wagner for more details.

The property was in a beautiful secluded location. It was clean and very well equipped. Communication with the owner was easy and friendly. I look forward to going back.

Outstanding Cabin Vacation!

  • 5 of 5

Just got home from awesome stay at cabin in Forbes Park. Cabin was perfect with everything you need to enjoy the beautiful outdoors with a hot up at night with a sky full of endless stars. Exploring the back roads of Forbes Park afforded us viewing hundreds of elk and deer, turkeys, and prairie dogs. We will be coming back and highly recommend this property to anyone that enjoys the outdoors and nature.

Texas Hospitality in Colorado

  • 5 of 5

This cabin and its surrounding area is one of the best-kept secrets in Colorado. The Sangre de Cristo mountains are somewhat isolated from the main portion of the Rockies in Colorado and are oftentimes overlooked as a result of their lack of ski resorts and overall development. Personally I see that as a huge positive as the area surrounding the cabin is wonderful for any nature lover to explore. The cabin is ideally located within 45 min of Great Sand Dunes National Park as well as several other great areas to explore like La Veta and the Highway of Dreams located just over La Veta Pass 30 minutes away. Both destinations are well worth a full day to enjoy and your return to the cabin is easy from either. The hot tub is also quite a lifesaver (and back saver in my case) after a long day of hiking the sand dunes.

The cabin is located at elevation (9,200 feet) so you are guaranteed cool, pleasant evenings even in the middle of summer and the surrounding alpine environment is lovely to behold offering you amazing sunsets every evening right off the back deck. Inside, the cabin was spotless from a cleanliness standpoint (not always the case when it comes to this sort of rental) and it was quite evident that attention was paid to ensuring it was ready for us when we arrived. The cabin contains all the necessities for either a long weekend or couple week trip as it has a well-stocked kitchen as well as a very nice selection of both DVD and even VHS tapes along with satellite tv that offers the basic channels along with a few other choice options (DIY and HGTV for the most part in our case). Not shown in the photos is a great loft area with a king size bed and brand new flat screen tv with DVD player that was a welcome retreat as the evening wore on. We also appreciated the wood stove when a cold front went through dropping the temperature from 75 F in La Veta to 36 F once we got back over the pass and up to the cabin. It switched over to snow as the night wore on but we were as content as could be after a soak in the hot tub and a nice fire crackling in the stove.

Susan was also awesome to deal with in the run up to our rental and very responsive to any of our questions. It was a pleasure to communicate with her. We also deeply appreciated being able to bring our two Scotties with us to the mountains.

The only upgrade we would have liked was an iron/ironing board but that is a very minor quibble for what was a great 5 day vacation.

Firefighter

  • 3 of 5

Nice cabin. It lacked smoke detectors, fire extinguisher, as well as a co detector the is required by the state of Colorado. This was pointed out to the owner. He said he would have them installed. It's a shame that basic safety was not a priority! Wouldn't recommend staying until the required detectors and fire extinguisher were verified as being installed properly and in good working order.

a retreat to remember

  • 5 of 5

This cabin was absolutely prefect in all the ways we imagined. We stayed 3 nights and it simply didn't feel long enough. The cabin was clean and comfortable as well as stocked with everything you might need minus food which was nice. We went to the grocery store on the way out of town and it was no issue to cook all of our meals and snacks. The wood stove kept us plenty warm and the beds are very comfortable. The hot tub is also a nice touch. We did get 18"of snow the day before we were leaving but it was nice to see that when we left at 8am the roads were plowed and had no issues getting out although 4x4 was needed. The owners were very kind and helpful also. This is a great place to just relax and it is family friendly. We are already looking at dates for a return trip this summer! Thank you for your hospitality!
