About the property

The homestead of the Isle of Rest Planation.

The Isle of Rest Plantation was once a 4,000 acre working plantation originally built around 1810. The main house burned down after being struck by lightening and the current home was completed in 1865. The property was divided into two parcels by the family in the mid 1920's. Most of the land was sold to developers in the 1950's when Lake Gaston was formed by damming the Roanoke River. The homestead was lived in until 1973 when the matriarch of the family passed away. Her heirs allowed the land to sit for thirty years and fall into disrepair. I purchased the homestead and 25 acres in 2005 and set off to restore the grand old house. My family and I use it as a weekend getaway throughout the year and stay for a week several times during the summer. We put the boat in down the street at Holly Creek Marina, shoot skeet, take nature walks, enjoy the deer and other wildlife, and just relax. We recently decided to try renting the house out to help with the expenses and to share the wonderful setting with others. If you are a nature lover, reader, writer, boater, hunter or all the above you will really enjoy staying at the Isle of Rest. We have allowed two weddings and two business retreats to use the property and everyone loved it. Events, like a wedding, will be charged the weekly rate regardless of number of days on the property.

About Adam Jones

I live in Chapel Hill, NC about a one hour drive to the farm house, as we call it. I own a small real estate company and have been married for ten years. I have two adorable daughters (5 & 8) and two great dogs. We all love going to the farm house.

Adam Jones purchased this farmhouse in 2005

Why Adam Jones chose Bracey

I always wanted a farm house since I grew up in the city. When I stumbled over this property years ago I simply fell in love with it. Even though it had been neglected I saw the potential in the 140 year old buildings. I was single at the time, so I spent weekends and vacations cleaning up the land and renovating the main house and out buildings. It's been a love affair ever since I drove down the 300 yard driveway.

What makes this farmhouse unique

I doubt there is another home like this one that is open for rental. It's a unique experience to stay in a property with such history and beauty. All of the woodwork in the house, except in the kitchen, is original to 1865. There are six fireplaces in the main house (four working). The office (once a doctor's office and the plantation office) is a usable guest house with it's own wood stove, but no plumbing. Perfect for the teenagers or the big snorer in the group. The pond is stocked with bass and we have our duck friends paddling around. Blackberries, figs and other fruits grow in summer and are there for the picking.

Wonderful Experience

  • 5 of 5

The house is gorgeous with comfortable beds. The air conditioning worked great, despite the heat wave. The pond and the resident ducks made afternoons lovely. You can see all the stars and the Milky Way from the front porch. Overall, this was a wonderful property for a gathering away from the city.

Beautiful property with so much history!

  • 5 of 5

I rented this house to share with family during a 60th birthday celebration for my mom! We all loved the place! It's tucked away in a nice, private secluded area. It's only a few min from the lake & very close to Tanglewood Shores, which is why I decided to rent it.

The only drawback is the one full bathroom but we made it work! Enjoyed the views & even hopped in the kayaks in the pond!

This was one of the best trips my family has ever had. The homestead was beautiful. It was a very relaxing family oriented trip filled with fishing, kayaking water fights and lots of laughing. Adam, the owner was super sweet and accommodating. We cannot wait to visit again!

Thanksgiving At The Farm

  • 5 of 5

My family and I spent the week of Thanksgiving at "the farm". We could not have selected a better location for our family celebration. Our ages ranged from 75 to 2 and there was something for all of us to do if we so chose. Three of our granddaughters enjoyed kayaking on the gorgeous pond closely supervised by two resident ducks who welcomed having a little company. The perfect weather kept us outside most of the time during the day and early evening. We played corn hole, softball, rode on our four wheeler, fished/catch and release of course; and the wonderful fire pit that everyone gathered around early evening for "toast the sunset" time, making s'mores, and happy conversations.

The front porch swing was so inviting and we enjoyed having a little quiet time to read and relax. The inside of the house is quite spacious and accommodated our family very nicely. Everyone had a comfy bed and slept so good every night. This beautiful plantation home is beautifully restored and takes one back in time....(if you're old enough to relate to "golden" times:) The living room was inviting and each evening we sat by the fire and played games, read, played the cherished piano, and reminisced about our good ole days. Thanksgiving Day we enjoyed a hearty feast and the dining room table is large enough to accommodate our crew. This was so much fun!

May I recommend this lovely VRBO rental for any family/friend event. Having 25 acres to roam was the icing on the cake.

The Isle of Rest plantation home sits on 25 secluded acres, but only a few miles from Lake Gaston and the nearest boat ramp. It's a nice change of pace from being on the water all day to grilling out at the farm house in the evening. There is not much to do other than relax, read, rock and enjoy nature.
