Our house is located in the heart of the Concordia neighborhood just half a block from diverse restaurants, natural food grocery stores, yoga, massage studios etc… We live on the property and love our neighborhood diversity.

Famed Portland Alberta street is just a couple blocks away with a diverse selection of retail, entertainment, and more dining experiences within a loving vibrant community. Alberta offers food for every taste (vegan to carnivore), craving (foie gras, sushi, middle eastern, southern, to Thai), popular Salt & Straw Ice Cream, and budget (PBR to wine bars). Infused with locally owned shops, cafés, bars and galleries.

You can walk or bike though one of our numerous beautiful parks or community gardens. There are also numerous bus lines within a few blocks walk that take you all over the city or rent a zip car or car to go. We love our neighborhood for offering the diversity of all these things, but with the peace and quiet of a neighborhood and plenty of safe on street parking and quiet to listen to the birds sing.


It is a private two bedroom lower level basement accessory structure with your own entrance opening up to the garden. There are about 7 stairs to enter the space so keep that in mind. We created this space to be fun, comfortable, and homey. We do share the house so note we will hear each other now and the. It offers two queen sized beds. There is also a queen futon if needed. There is a small one person shower bathroom with toilet and sink, kitchenette, living area. There is a roku tv that offers many movies, and a large lending library as well as lots of portland info.


-lockbox entry allows for easy check in / check out, at your convenience. We will send you the code upon arrival. You'll have complete private access to the unit you have rented & the grounds of the property including shared yard and garden space.


-We are just a phone call/email/text away! Texts are preferred & we respond promptly to them. You may also use the web site messages as those are pushed as texts or email too. We are pretty hands off & will leave you to enjoy your stay for the most part. We live on the premises.

KITCHEN : The kitchenette has everything you need should you wish to do light cooking - fridge, two burner hot plate, microwave, blender, coffee maker, large toaster oven, all cookware and dishware as well as tea, coffee, and snacks. We do not keep the kitchen fully stocked with every item;, but we do offer tea, coffee, some condiments and snacks, and the grocery is 3 blocks away.

Outdoor is a shared sitting area with patio, • Ready-to-fire charcoal grill • Ample street parking & alley entrance if needed

-Check-in is after 4PM Out at 11am sharp

-Smoking is NOT allowed. No smoking or vaping of tobacco or cannabis is allowed inside of property.

-People other than those in the Guest party set forth above may not stay overnight in the property. Any other person in the property is the sole responsibility of Guest.

-The unit is privately owned; the owners are not responsible for any accidents, injuries or illness that occurs while on the premises or its facilities. The Homeowners are not responsible for the loss of personal belongings or valuables of the guest. By accepting this reservation, it is agreed that all guests are expressly assuming the risk of any harm arising from their use of the premises or others whom they invite to use the premise.

-Keep the property and all furnishings in good order, only use appliances for their intended uses & inform us if anything is not working upon your arrival.

-Respect the neighbors - houses are close together in this neighborhood, so please respect noise level after 9p & before 8am. If using the fire pit or grills or just enjoying the back yard be aware there might be people sleeping just next to you.

Interaction with Guests: Limited interaction likely, but we enjoy meeting travelers so if your spending time lounging the yard most likely we will be as well. We live just upstairs and the spaces are connected, but you will have complete privacy with a separate entrance just in the back of the house by the garden.

TAXES: Portland automatically collets the 11.5% local lodging tax included in your charges.

NO CABLE But we have a rROKU box. We have a dvd and VHS with lots of movies. Maybe read a good book from our lending library? We have numerous informative magazines and info about Portland neighborhood offerings as well as a stocked bookshelf and games. There is wireless Internet

Laundry: Clean, bedding, bath towels, hand towels, wash cloths, and kitchen towels come with your stay. One set per person. No beach towels provided. NO laundry use but there is laundromats nearby.

IRON: there is an iron and board

CHECKING IN AND OUT: We will try to be flexible about check in and out times but with bookings we might need to stick to 11am out and 4pm in times.

STAYS FOR LONGER THAN ONE WEEK (MONTH): If you want to stay longer than one week be advised while your space can be a private sanctuary, though it is still one big house with us living upstairs.

NUMBER OF GUESTS People other than the registered Guest(s) may not stay overnight in the property unless notified. Please respect our 4-person limit. Guests over 4 people are only $20 extra a night. Baby's under 1 exempted from that.

Cleaning Fee: for every stay there is a $50 cleaning fee

PETS: pets are allowed with a $50 per pet cleaning fee. No more than two well behaved dogs And you must clean up after your pets on your own in the yard and any messes they make in the space. If the animal destroys any property you are required to pay for damages. We do not allow dogs to be left in space if they bark when you are away!!! Nor do we allow them unleashed roaming of backyard. Please be aware of your pets habits.

BIKING: WE off 4 older bikes for your wanderings. As you probably know, Portland is one of the best biking cities in North America.If they are stolen there is a $75 fee.

PUBLIC TRANSIT: TriMet bus #6 and #72 both stop one block away. The #6 will get you downtown in 24 minutes. The #72 is handy for traveling up and down nearby Alberta Street or to head west toward TriMet's MAX light rail Yellow Line. Plan your trip at TriMet's website.

CAR SHARING: Portland is home to car sharing services including Zipcar, Getaround, and Car2Go.

AIRPORT: Car: 15 minutes with no traffic

Taxi: About $25

AMTRAK or GREYHOUND : About 30 minutes via MAX Yellow Line light rail and transfer to #72 bus.

We had a wonderful time

We stayed in the apartment with our 14 yr old daughter and enjoyed it very much; there is plenty of space and comfortable beds. The description of the apartment is accurate and the photos capture it well; everything was clean and as expected. No problems with appliances or Wifi. The yard and garden are lovely, as is every other house on the street! We absolutely loved the neighbourhood and Portland in general. There are so many things to do within walking distance, and then of course there is the rest of the city to explore. I wish we had more time.

During our stay it was very hot, and we really enjoyed the cool basement refuge, but you are aware that you are below ground. I think that some people might find the apartment a bit dark during rainy days and winter months, and the ceilings are fairly low in places so tall people would probably not enjoy this space. These are just some things to consider based on your own preferences - we really had a wonderful time and would certainly stay again. There is so much to do and see, I don't know who would want to sit around inside the house anyway...

We were quite busy during our stay and communicated with the owner by email, they were easy to get in touch with if needed. I would absolutely recommend this listing to others, I found it a nice low-key space to relax in and I hope we can return soon.

Conveniently located

We enjoyed our stay in Portland. The location of the home was very convenient to all of the shops, restaurants and most importantly Concordia college which was our reason for the visit. We appreciated the use of the bicycles and really enjoyed riding around the area with our family. We didn't care for the entrance and stairs to the basement disclosed by the owners, the family room was very small and would of liked to have cable TV as an option. The bathroom was entirely to small. The bedrooms were spacious however not the most comfortable mattresses and one mattress squeaked every turn. The kitchen was well stocked and nice small amenities throughout the bathroom and kitchen.

Owner's Response: thanks for staying with us glad you enjoyed using our bikes and traveling our great neighborhood. Yes we do say in our listing that there are stairs to enter property and that we do not offer cable tv but instead about 100 movies to watch. We also do say that it is a small one person bath something we do hope to change in the future but for now its gets the job done. Sorry if you felt you didn't like the beds every person is very different as to what kind of bed they like so we choose ones that were medium not to soft or hard and sometimes that doesn't work for some people. I will look into why it was squeaky? that is not something that has ever been told to us. Maybe a board under it was loose?

Convenient but less than Comfy for us.

This was in the area we wanted, very quiet, with restaurants and large market a short walk away. And the back garden area was inviting, though scraggly, which is typical Portland. The host was not the welcome them in person type, but she was well organized and professional in her business dealings. Security deposit returned promptly.

We had not expected a basement apt, or the staircase my husband would have to navigate to get there. When I raised these issues, the host responded promptly and referred me back to the website listing. Turns out her description of the property consisted of an overview, which I'd read, and then a more specific description in another section which I'd somehow missed. The place was near my daughter's, so we decided to stay.

Another surprise- breakfast had to be cooked on a hotplate; there was no stove. The kitchen and entire house was equipped with, it looked like, many thrift store finds, which doesn't always result in good lighting or a unified look; however It was clean and neat.

We might have been happier in the small but above ground guest house, but it was booked the three nights we were in the other unit, so we didn't get a chance to see it

Yes the site does direct you to a description of the property you are renting and we do have a long write up that we hope people read. It does say its a lower unit and that there are 7 stairs to enter as well as stairs to enter the home in front. It also says very clearly that there is no stove and it is a kitchenette with all the things we provide for you including hot plate, blender, crockpot, coffee pot, water warmer, and utensils. We do decorate the unit with mostly ikea products for usability not goodwill. And most of the decorations are our own that we have put around. Including hand painted art and coasters from the many places portland has to offer. Sorry you did not read the whole description before booking. But yes we do look forward to hosting you in our smaller unit next visit especially if you do not need two bedrooms it is more cozy.

Great location, family vacation

Clean and comfortable stay

We were greeted with a bowl of freshly picked plums from a tree in the front yard. It was a wonderful start to a comfortable weeks stay. Awesome location! Super friendly host!

No pets in the Hobbit Hole

This place is in a lovely neighborhood within walking distance to several great restaurants. There were some amenities in the bathroom and the bedrooms were nice. While the bedrooms were generous in size, the sitting room and kitchen were cramped and the bathroom extremely tight. Also be aware that the outdoor pictures provided are of an annex space in the yard, however you will be in the basement with your hosts right above you. They have hardwood floors and when they walk around it is loud. Our host also was noisily recycling right outside the open window early on Sunday morning.

Most difficult for us about this stay was that we were promised a pet friendly place for our two little dogs. However, our hostess made a couple of snide remarks toward our dogs when we first arrived. For instance, I am pregnant and she asked me if I thought my dog would be okay when my baby arrived. We were in town for my brother's wedding and received a text from our host during the wedding that the dogs were being too loud. We thought that we would be in the separate apartment in the backyard, but the noise coming from the upper house is what was difficult for our dogs. There is a cat on the property so "dog friendly" is a stretch. While the yard is fenced in and well kept, the owners expressly ask that we not allow our dogs to pee in the yard, we were expected to walk the dogs down the street. So again, this was not very pet friendly.

Finally, my husband and I and my parents (our group this stay) have stayed at private rentals several times over the past several years in Portland, Seattle, Bend and Montana and have always felt welcome as guests. However, in this particular stay, we felt more like we were unwanted family members who happened to show up in town and needed to a place to stay- not paying guests. The hosts were ever-present and not friendly or accommodating, we felt we needed to sneak past them to get into our rental, it was very uncomfortable.

There were no kitchen towels or paper towels and we did spill some water on the floor so we had no choice but to clean it up with the white towels from our bathroom set (which included no extras, but one bath towel, washcloth and hand towel for each person for a 4 night stay) and the towel that we used came away from the floor filthy. We honestly were not comfortable enough with our hosts to ask for more, we left a night early because we needed to get away from this difficult situation.

Owner's Response: Hi Rachel, I wonder did you read the full description and see all of our pictures? What we say is exactly what we offer to the placement of every piece of furniture. It does say lower level apartment and that we live upstairs very clearly! Did you not read the description?! And yes we are in a city it gets loud with neighbors and their trash cans sometimes. Also it very clearly states that we have a shared backyard but you are welcome to use all of it. We also say dogs can not run around without a leash. YEs we have a cat but it lives indoors. We do not want pups 'going' in our garden. Walking a pet 10 steps to the front of the house is not to much to ask. I wonder why did you choose our space if it did not have what you wanted? I also had many wonderful conversations with your father over many days and he was always very happy. When i would try to say hi to you you would not even acknowledge that i said something and just walk right by??? I feel that very rude. . I also wonder did you read the rules we have for dogs before you booked? It states very clearly that we do not allow dogs to be in our home if they bark nonstop. You agreed to these rules and signed. We were more than nice to you and your family. When you first arrived I helped you with your luggage and getting in the home and even helped chased down your dog that was running wild down the street for you! Id say that is very nice especially since I'm disabled and have a hard time with that. As to dog friendly yes we are! But your dogs would not stop barking for over 8 hours! Also Your dogs peed all over our couch, carpet in two places and the bath mats!!!! you did not even tell us! how rude! SO I assume you are responding in this way because we had to use your security deposit to get professional cleaning solutions to get the dog pee out of all the areas not to mention having to throw away ll the towels and buy a new couch cover! We also state very clearly we leave a set of towels per guest less you are staying over a week, and if you had looked a kitchen towel is in the cabinet along with paper towels and cleaning supplies. I also assume you are saying we have a dirty floor because you had been walking on it with your pets? We mop! I also did see you not leave until your real check out date so why lie? Overall you were a extremely bad guest and I wish i could leave a horrible review for you to warn other guests. You left the space such a mess that it cost me over $300 to repair.

Car: not necessary

Neighborhood: NE 30th and Killingsworth Sts.

'A great area to go for dinner is NE 30th and Killingsworth in the Concordia neighborhood because there's a cluster of good restaurants, so if one place is crowded you can go to the next and they're all delicious, with great atmospheres and really nice people. And I appreciate that it's a neighborhood, with families out and about.

I really like a place called Wilder, which is run by an Irish expatriate. You can get great mussels and frites there, which is what I usually do. The bar takes up most of the space, and they have a very friendly bartender. It's on a corner, and there's something about a corner bar-slash-restaurant that seems to exemplify friendliness and openness. You can just drop in and feel like a regular.

Nearby is a restaurant called Nonna, which is Italian and has a pretty outdoor area, and next to that is a place called DOC, which is also Italian. And there's Beast, which has a more upscale tasting menu, and a cocktail lounge called Expatriate across the street, which Naomi Pomeroy from Beast also owns with her husband, Kyle. Usually if I go to Expatriate, I get a whiskey or bourbon drink, and the fried fish sandwich is great.'

7. Pet must not cause damage to premises or furnishings. If damages are caused, the cost of the damage may be deducted from security deposit.
8. Guest should prevent pets from producing excessive noise at a level that disturbs neighbors such as leaving unattended and barking.
9. Pet will not be left unattended for an undue length of time, either indoors or out. Pet will not be left unattended on balcony, patio, or porch.
10. Homeowner assumes no responsibility for illness or injury that may incur to pets or humans while on the premises.
