About Amanda Wallis

Motty & Mark live in Hertfordshire, England.

Why Amanda Wallis chose Saint-Chinian area

We bought this property after falling in love with it. The Vallee de l'Orb is truly a little corner of paradise and you are right in it, on the river! A perfect family holiday, escape from it all.

La Roque was selected for Alastair Sawday's Special Places to Stay: French Holiday Homes, 2008-10 and 2010-12.

See our website www.vieussan.net for up to date details on pricing & availability.

What makes this house unique

Relax in your own Mediterranean garden, your own private river beach and stunning views! Houses with direct river frontage where you can swim and kayak are hard to find in France, especially within a national park. This house is a gem.

Guestbook comments from the manager

What a lovely location perfectly placed for exploring the local area. We had a great time relaxing by the river swimming, having a picnic and generally relaxing even with 2 small kids in tow. Annabel and Martin were wonderful host a pleasure to be around and just so welcoming. Thank you for letting us use your lovely old winery for our first family holiday.

Stunning

  • 5 of 5

From the moment the family viewed the property from the village side of the river they were 'blown away'

This fantastically restored property is spacious, was immaculately clean, extremely well equipped and tastefully decorated. The smaller two sitting rooms in Piscine provided a haven from the heat and for quieter moments, while the games room in Rivière was a hit with the children.

However it's situation provides for a wide range of activities for all age groups, from pool and river swimming, kayaking, walking, wine tasting, visiting local villages and markets with stunning scenery everywhere, or just chiling out in the garden with the beaches of the Med about an hours drive away.

Thanks to Lydia, charming and helpful caretaker.

We will be back, there is still so much to explore.

Charming home right on the river

  • 5 of 5

Mark, thanks much for reaching out about my stay at La Roque. Let me start by saying that I had a great time staying at la roque and visiting the surrounding area. I came with lots of things to see and do, and once there found may more sites to see. By the way, the wine in the area is to die for!

Regarding the septic tank I didn't notice any smells or malfunction. The plumbing worked fine, hot water was constant, and water pressure was strong. All of the other aspects of the house worked well. The house was charming, and the old wine press in the games room was a wonderful touch. Also, the area around the house was quiet, and the neighbors were friendly.

By the way, Lydia was very informative and nice.

Thanks very much for a wonderful stay

Lovely location

  • 5 of 5

Our family stayed in the whole property for three weeks. This was a nicely restored property in a lovely location. The house was well equipped and spacious. The views from the property are stunning. The location is excellent for walking, cycling and relaxing. We found some good local wines and lovely restaurants. The housekeeper Lydia was delightful and always helpful. The holiday has encouraged us to visit France again in the future.

Just loved it............

  • 5 of 5

After the first day, I enquired about booking for the next year. The house is just done up so tastefully and what can I say about the outside area....the river just made our holiday with the kayaks and the hammocks, it was a really relaxing place to be for us as parents, but yet plenty of activity on the water for our 4 children aged from 14 - 7. Will definetly be back !!thats if its not already booked up!!!

Lovely gite, stunning location

  • 5 of 5

Our gite was fully equipped and spotlessly clean - and the view from the kitchen window across the river to the Medieval village on the hillside is breathtaking. The photos simply don't do it justice. I can’t remember a holiday where we all felt so happy and relaxed.

My family members have many (conflicting) interests, but sunbathing, swimming in the clear mountain river, bird-watching (heron, egret, even golden oriole!), hiring canoes for gentle 'white water' adventures, walking through beautiful countryside, strolling across the ancient bridge to drinks and a meal at Le Lezard Bleu – it’s all here at your doorstep.

And drive 20 minutes in any direction through some jaw-dropping scenery, and you find a superb restaurant... a magnificent fish monger... a vineyard with a Roman mosaic... a picturesque village clinging to the rocks... a walk up a river with pretty, natural bathing pools...

We were torn about letting you use this on your website, because we don’t want people to discover you – but it’s only fair to let you know how much we enjoyed ourselves, all of us.

We would recommend La Roque unhesitatingly, whether you want a quiet and relaxing holiday or an action-packed, activity-based one. (Did I mention the Med is about an hour’s drive away?)

We stayed in the lower floor, but if you ever decide to rent your upper floor with swimming pool, please let us know first.

Thank you so much – and I assure you, we shall return!

Notes:
OUTSIDE: Immediately outside the kitchen/living room is a small secure terrace area, safe for small children to play in. Down some steps from this area you have a shaded terrace with dining table in our walled garden, planted with aloes and other Mediterranean plants. Help yourself to cherries and figs in season. Your PRIVATE RIVER BEACH, with hammocks and picnic table under the shade of old trees and Vieussan's historic bridge, is a gentle walk down from the top level of the garden. There is a shallow area suitable for children to play, and access for river swimming, and kayaking. The accommodation is all on one floor and easily entered, and in this sense is suitable for the infirm as well as small children. (There is only one step within the accommodation.) However the outside eating area is the top terrace of the garden and does require descending a few steps, feasible for some elderly people but not for wheelchair users.
