We are avid travelers and running this guesthouse allows us some freedom in the off season to do just that. Carroll spent most of her career in Human Resources but gave it all up (darn) several years ago to open a hostel in Niagara Falls- leaving the wonderful California weather behind but gaining a wonderful husband. Andre is from Germany and we found each other here! We have since expanded from the hostel and added a couple vacation rentals to our endeavors. We think they are a great alternative to a sterile hostel - more like home away from home.
Carroll Reetz purchased this house in 2013
The Great Gorge Guesthouse is perfectly situated across from the Aquarium and a 10 minute walk to the tip of the Falls. We are located in the historic downtown area where most of the homes are over 100 years old. There's lots of history here as well as the incredible Niagara Falls.
Great location for the Discovery tour of the falls! Carol met us upon arrival and gave us some really valuable tips for our visit to Niagara. The Guesthouse was clean and provided everything we needed. There were some very nice touches like books and games available for us to use during our stay. I recommend staying here.
We stayed from 5-9 Jan 2017. Landed in a snow storm and it was freezing cold for the whole stay. The house was easy to find and very very warm wehn we arrived, the heating was set to keep up toasty the whole stay. It is right next to the Aquarium, and the bridge was right there - walk over that and you look down on the Maid of the Mist boats (which were closed down for the winter and frozen in). We walked everywhere!! It was such a perfect location. Having read some other reviews I can only assume they got lost or something - we walked to the waterfalls, over the bridge into Canada, couldn't have asked for a better location. The house itself was perfect for what we needed. 3 bedrooms, 1 bath, kitchen, dining and lounge. Wifi was awesome. Yes, its an old house so some floors squeaked, all part of the charm to us. The kitchen was fitted out with the basics, we werent cooking up a huge roast dinner so didnt need fancy serving plates and bowls - the basics were there and all we needed. Carrol, the owner, was so incredibly helpful with all our pre-trip emails and questions. She asked we text her when we got tot the house to make sure we were in and all was OK. She was amazing and very quick to reply to us with our many questions not just about the house but the area also. It was an amazing experience. Frist trip to the Falls buts hopefully not the last. Thank you Carrol!
P.S. Almost forgot - the view from the stairs and C bedroom - we watched the fireworks on Friday night at 9pm...no idea they were going to have fireworks but we could see them as clear as day from the house - amazing!
The house was beautiful and very well kept. We really enjoyed our time there.
The location was perfect too - less than a block from the Niagara Aquarium. It also was a short walk away from the main attractions (less than 10 minutes). We chose to go on a very cold weekend, so the fact that there is a trolley that drops off at the aquarium was great.
We'd definitely stay here again the next time we return to Niagara Falls!
Very spacious, clean, well-equipped house close to the falls. We enjoyed the walk through the park towards the falls. They host even provided baking equipment to make a cake for our little one's birthday party. Kind and good contact. Thanks!
This rental home is super clean and at a great location for all of the Niagara Falls attractions. It is a nice walk to the falls, mostly flat. The house is well maintained for an old home and the beds were comfy. We didn't have any issues arise, but I am confident that if we did, Carroll would have been more than happy to fix it and make it right. She is very friendly and was great about replying to emails and texts in a timely manner. I would definitely recommend this rental property to others.
This house was clean, well maintained, on a quiet street, with the perfect location for all the Niagara sites. It's an easy walk to the trolley point, where you can ride to all the main attractions on the US side. The owner was available to help with any issues, but we didn't have any. The aquarium is maybe 100 feet from the house, and you can see the mist from the American falls from there. We highly recommend this property.
The cave of the winds was an amazing experience and the highlight of our trip. If you have children over age 5, walk to the ferris wheel behind the Sheraton hotel on the Canadian side. It is a long walk but worth it, as there are many different activities including mini-golf (complete with a fire-shooting volcano), arcade, billiards, and shopping. You can also drive there, somehow - we walked.
This was our first time staying on the US side of the Falls and we are GLAD that we did especially with this rental. This rental was not only very clean and organized, it had amenities other rentals from other sites haven't had. From ice trays (when a fridge doesn't have an ice machine, ice trays a great and yet no other rental we've ever been at before this home one), to a pack and play (great if you're traveling with an infant or toddler!), to books and games. There's honestly so much that this home hs convenienced us with that we have officially become spoiled. There is no doubt that we would rent this home again. The location was also great and located less than a block from the Falls' aquarium and if you're in this trip for exercise, it's an excellent place to start your journey from.
There was more we were going to list but i'm honestly not sure where to start.
The house is situated in the Park Place Historic District within a typical rust belt city. It is a national historic district located at Niagara Falls in Niagara County, New York. It encompasses 89 contributing buildings. It is principally a residential district built up between 1885 and 1928. The dominant architectural styles are Italianate, Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, and Arts and Crafts.
This an urban environment with a diverse racial and socioeconomic population. While many of the big old houses in the area are lovely and well maintained, there are others that are neglected or empty. It is an area that is slowly being brought back to life with new people and energy.
