Designed as a personal private retreat by a Chicago architect, this modern adobe style home harmonizes perfectly with the natural simple environment. The cozy casita's well-lit living room is furnished with traditional Mexican leather tub chairs, a comfortable sand-colored love seat, and the owner's original paintings.
The well-appointed kitchen features hand-carved and painted Mexican cabinetry and the dining area seats four comfortably in French leather bistro chairs.
The two bedrooms feature queen beds with brand new pillowtop mattresses covered with high-thread count sheets and down comforters. Both bedrooms feature ensuite baths, tiled with Mexican terra cotta tile, featuring spacious vanities with ample storage, Egyptian cotton towels, and hotel quality robes.
While well separated from the main house, guests at the casita may avail themselves of the hot tub, grill, and bocce ball court. The casita has its own ramada, perfect for enjoying a night cap and staring at the mulitudes of stars.
Plaza Blanca, with its white cathedral stone spires made famous by Georgia O'Keefe, is only a five minute drive away. The famous Ghost Ranch, former winter home of Ms. O'Keefe, is just twenty minutes away and features creative workshops, horseback riding, rock wall climbing, hiking, or you can simply sit and soak in the dramatic beauty. Or if you wish to explore your creative side, the owner, the established abstract artist Susan Schuler offers private and small group instruction for all skill levels.
I am an abstract painter and I moved to Abiquiu, NM about 3 1/2 years ago. I fell in love with the beautiful area and the artist community. The community is warm and friendly and it seems that Abiquiu has become the new hot spot of NM. Most people are not that familiar with the area. The landscape is filled with red rock mountains, and blue mountain ranges. The Sangre de Cristo mountains are the backdrop for the casita and most of the year they are snow capped against that western blue sky. Ghost Ranch and Georgia O'Keefe's home are in Abiquiu.
Susan purchased this cottage in 2012
I did not intend to move to NM. I was visiting friends and decided to look at property for the fun of it. When I entered the 24 acres right on the river and my beautiful home which was originally built by a Chicago architect and his partner , I knew I was home. Both the casita and my home are filled with light and no matter which window you gaze out of the view is spectacular. I could not get the property out of my mind. The casita was a bonus as it is a wonderful space for family and friends to unwind and it gives me the opportunity to rent it out to new people exploring the area. I love meeting my interesting guests and hope that they enjoy the space as much as I.
Abiquiu is only 50 minutes out of Santa Fe and about 1 hour and 15 minutes to Taos. We are also only 50 minutes from Los Alamos. There is a superb chef owner restaurant that has opened in Abiquiu called Arioso. Lunch and dinner reservations must be made online and you bring your own beverage and aperitif to be enjoyed with your delightful meal. The Chef Julian goes out of his way to create 4 courses that are divine. The reataurant is very close to Viento del Rio.
There is hiking, rafting , and kayaking. Abiquiu Lake which recently put in a new beach is only 20 minutes away. A wonderful art gallery called the Rising Moon gallery has local and international artists work. Jaye Buros , who is the proprietor and herself an artist has a wide variety of entertainment at the gallery from authors talks, gallery openings and music through the area.
I went to Viento del Rio to work, not to relax, so my perspective is somewhat different from other reviewers. I'm a writer and I needed to jumpstart my manuscript with two weeks of solitude so I could focus on writing. Lucky me, I just happened to pick one of the loveliest spots in Georgia O'Keeffe country. The casita is spacious, beautifully furnished (Susan is a talented artist,) and QUIET. Susan is a delightful, friendly and accomodating host, making sure I had everything I needed, but never intruding. Whenever I needed a break I could go for a walk down to the Rio Chama or on one of a number of hikes nearby. If I didn't feel like cooking, there was Bode's or the Abiquiu Inn. And at the end of a solid day of work...a fire in the fireplace and a glass of wine and a view of the sunset over the river and the Pedernal. I can't wait to go back, maybe just for a romantic getaway with my husband!
We enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend at V. D. R. The kitchen was quaint but was supplied with everything we needed to cook our holiday meal (with the addition of our crock pot). We spent every night cozied up by the fire after exploring the beautiful landscape of the area. V.D.R is a peaceful and relaxing stay with a great host.
We absolutely LOVED our stay at Viento Del Rio! The casita is so very comfortable and Susan has let no detail go unattended! The location on the Chama River is serene with big sky views. Privacy is without compare! The attention to detail in the kitchen is lovely - as is throughout the casita. (And, Susan, thank you for the bottle of wine! We had brought plenty of our own so we left the bottle you kindly provided for the next guests. We also loved the yummy breakfast breads and the snacks/fruit you left!) The bed was so very comfy . . . . boutique hotel grade mattress. And the linens were lovely! Loved the décor dotted with examples of Susan's exquisite artwork! We could not have imagined a more stunning spot!!! And, Susan, what a lovely hostess!!!! She was so warm and welcoming!! Loved chatting with her and viewing more of her artwork. She also gave us suggestions for points of interest (hiking nearby Plaza Blanca, Ghost Ranch, touring Georgia O'Keefe's Abiquiu home, Ojo Caliente) and dining (Arioso Restaurant, El Farito). Our trip was so enhanced by contact with Susan and we appreciate her interest and warmth! We plan to be back again and again! AND, we have shared info re: Viento Del Rio with all of our friends. Susan, our sincere thanks! Pammie & Wayne
I have to be honest, I was not sure what to expect since Abiquiu is a sparsely populated area but this casita was a gem! Not only was it clean, beautiful, efficient, but had an incredible view. Susan set up a lovely basket as a welcoming. Such a nice touch. Not only that, Susan lives just a few steps away and is a wonderful artist. I will definitely try to come back again! Thanks Susan!!
Perfect getaway for two couples! Close to Plaza Blanca, Abiquiu Lake and Ojo Caliente. We spent 3 nights and slept like babies. Susan supplied us with everything we needed. We enjoyed the beautiful views, bluebirds and wide open spaces! Green chili cheeseburgers at Bodes a must! ❤️
Cozy Casita is a wonderful place to plan your next escape from your busy life. We stayed for two evenings and had a great time. The home sits on the edge of the Chama river, which one can hear from the porch. The owner is extremely accommodating and very helpful. She also happens to be an extraordinary artist and you'll have the pleasure of admiring some of her work on the Casita's walls. The only downside to Cozy Casita is the kitchen, which is really limited to a small countertop oven and two hot plates. Nothing to fret about but you'll certainly want to plan accordingly.
