Designed as a personal private retreat by a Chicago architect, this modern adobe style home harmonizes perfectly with the natural simple environment. The cozy casita's well-lit living room is furnished with traditional Mexican leather tub chairs, a comfortable sand-colored love seat, and the owner's original paintings.
The well-appointed kitchen features hand-carved and painted Mexican cabinetry and the dining area seats four comfortably in French leather bistro chairs.
The two bedrooms feature queen beds with brand new pillowtop mattresses covered with high-thread count sheets and down comforters. Both bedrooms feature ensuite baths, tiled with Mexican terra cotta tile, featuring spacious vanities with ample storage, Egyptian cotton towels, and hotel quality robes.
While well separated from the main house, guests at the casita may avail themselves of the hot tub, grill, and bocce ball court. The casita has its own ramada, perfect for enjoying a night cap and staring at the mulitudes of stars.
Plaza Blanca, with its white cathedral stone spires made famous by Georgia O'Keefe, is only a five minute drive away. The famous Ghost Ranch, former winter home of Ms. O'Keefe, is just twenty minutes away and features creative workshops, horseback riding, rock wall climbing, hiking, or you can simply sit and soak in the dramatic beauty. Or if you wish to explore your creative side, the owner, the established abstract artist Susan Schuler offers private and small group instruction for all skill levels.
I am an abstract painter and I moved to Abiquiu, NM about 3 1/2 years ago. I fell in love with the beautiful area and the artist community. The community is warm and friendly and it seems that Abiquiu has become the new hot spot of NM. Most people are not that familiar with the area. The landscape is filled with red rock mountains, and blue mountain ranges. The Sangre de Cristo mountains are the backdrop for the casita and most of the year they are snow capped against that western blue sky. Ghost Ranch and Georgia O'Keefe's home are in Abiquiu.
Susan purchased this cottage in 2012
I did not intend to move to NM. I was visiting friends and decided to look at property for the fun of it. When I entered the 24 acres right on the river and my beautiful home which was originally built by a Chicago architect and his partner , I knew I was home. Both the casita and my home are filled with light and no matter which window you gaze out of the view is spectacular. I could not get the property out of my mind. The casita was a bonus as it is a wonderful space for family and friends to unwind and it gives me the opportunity to rent it out to new people exploring the area. I love meeting my interesting guests and hope that they enjoy the space as much as I.
Abiquiu is only 50 minutes out of Santa Fe and about 1 hour and 15 minutes to Taos. We are also only 50 minutes from Los Alamos. There is a superb chef owner restaurant that has opened in Abiquiu called Arioso. Lunch and dinner reservations must be made online and you bring your own beverage and aperitif to be enjoyed with your delightful meal. The Chef Julian goes out of his way to create 4 courses that are divine. The reataurant is very close to Viento del Rio.
There is hiking, rafting , and kayaking. Abiquiu Lake which recently put in a new beach is only 20 minutes away. A wonderful art gallery called the Rising Moon gallery has local and international artists work. Jaye Buros , who is the proprietor and herself an artist has a wide variety of entertainment at the gallery from authors talks, gallery openings and music through the area.
Cozy Casita is a wonderful place to plan your next escape from your busy life. We stayed for two evenings and had a great time. The home sits on the edge of the Chama river, which one can hear from the porch. The owner is extremely accommodating and very helpful. She also happens to be an extraordinary artist and you'll have the pleasure of admiring some of her work on the Casita's walls. The only downside to Cozy Casita is the kitchen, which is really limited to a small countertop oven and two hot plates. Nothing to fret about but you'll certainly want to plan accordingly.
My 24-year-old daughter and I have been on an extended road trip through New Mexico, and we decided to spend 3 days in Georgia O'Keefe country. Viento del Rio is perfectly located to take advantage of all that the Abiquiu area has to offer. It's only minutes away from the O'Keefe home/studio and Bode's General Store. Lake Abiquiu, Ghost Ranch, Ojo Caliente and other attractions are all within a half hour's drive. It's nice to know that you can get around quickly, but when you are at Viento del Rio, you feel as though you are far removed from the rest of the world. It is a special retreat - a sprawling property well off the road, beside the Rio Chama, with the Milky Way and an infinite number of stars to gaze at in the evening and a crystal clear blue sky come morning.
Upon our arrival, Susan greeted us with a basket of fruit, nuts, candy and baked goods. She had left a bottle of wine in the refrigerator for us too, and she also delivered a much-appreciated bag of coffee beans. We were impressed by the immaculate condition of the casita -- it was beautifully appointed and gleamingly clean. The beds were very comfortable and had good pillows for sitting up and reading. The construction of the casita is such that it maintains a comfortable temperature both day and night without air conditioning or heating - although there are ceiling fans, a working kiva fireplace with plenty of wood, and baseboard heaters if you need them. The kitchen is small but has everything you need to prepare complete meals if you choose to eat in. There was half-n-half in the refrigerator for our coffee - heaven! - and such a gracious and generous perk.
We enjoyed sitting in the Adirondack chairs on the porch with our morning coffee and again after sunset when the stars came out. We walked down to the river every day and enjoyed noting the tracks of desert animals that come out at night. It was so nice to come back to the casita at the end of a long day's adventures -- to be welcomed by the quiet and stillness and the coziness of the home. We had to tear ourselves away from the casita when check-out time came. We hadn't done half the things we intended to do! We enjoyed the beauty of the place to the point that we tossed our schedule out the window. We had a lovely conversation with Susan before we departed, and we left with the intention to return to Abiquiu and especially to Viento del Rio. This is my personal favorite of all my VRBO stays.
This was the first time in over ten years (without our kids) that my husband and I had some alone time. I have been wanting to explore Northern Arizona in more depth and especially the area Georgia O'Keeffe fell in love with. Susan's property is simply amazing, the casita we rented was perfect. Beautifully decorated, and spotless, a gift basket awaited us including chilled wine! We spent our days exploring Abiquiu, Plaza Blanca, Bandelier and The Ghost Ranch. The late afternoon thunderstorms were the best! And the rainbows, wow. We would love to comeback with our kids, and try and find more tarantulas in Plaza Blanca! Thank you Susan, John and I had time to be a couple again, and maybe you and New Mexico helped me convince my husband to leave California!
My husband, dog, and I were in Abiquiu for a weekend getaway and luckily landed at Susan's Viento Del Rio casita. Susan was available to assist us when we needed information and was a delightful host. We arrived only to find a bottle of wine and yogurt in the fridge, coffee beans to grind and a basketful of yummy pastries in the pantry for morning or midnight snack!! The place was very clean and comfortable. Even in the high 90's heat we had the casita kept cool with only ceiling fans! The casita is situated by the Chama river which was perfect for walks with our LabX who obsesses with swimming and fetching sticks! We sat on the porch at night and stargazed in this beautiful, peaceful spot in Abiquiu. The small stovetop and fridge were adequate for preparing breakfast and small meals. Susan's beautiful home is far enough away that you had privacy and she never intruded on our space. We would definitely return to Viento del Rio and hope to again soon. Thanks, Susan!
In a bucket list move last year to attend a workshop at Ghost Ranch, I stumbled upon Susan's home. What a lovely spot, the river, Pedernal and Susan's amazing hospitality. The experience was so rewarding that I decided to travel back for no other reason than to just stay at Viento Del Rio this summer. Susan's warm, charming casita and open hospitality makes it hard for me to think about going anywhere else ever. If you are hoping for an authentic Abiquiu experience - stop looking and stay here. Thank you Susan!!!
My wife and I recently stayed at Viento Del Rio while traveling around the Southwest. We honestly didn't spend too much time at the house. There's so much to see and do in and around New Mexico! The house served as a good mid point. During our stay we visited Taos, Santa Fe, Los Alamos, Chaco Canyon, and Mesa Verde.
Susan was very nice host. Booking was easy and she was responsive to emails and phone calls. She was helpful leading up to our stay and gave us a warm welcoming. The house itself was exactly what we were hoping for. It was quiet, secluded, with the look and feel of New Mexico. Unfortunately, there was an unwanted mouse staying with us. The mouse ate most of the goodies in Susan's welcome basket, and it ate several things my wife purchased as gifts. I told Susan and the house keeper about the mouse. Apparently, they already knew of the rodent infestation. A warning would have been nice to make sure we didn't leave any food out (the mouse even ate my wife's chap-stick right through the plastic and its droppings were all over). Aside from the mouse, and the first morning when we didn't have hot water due to a faulty water heater and showered with ice cold water, our stay worked out. hahaha!
A recommendation I have for the place (aside from getting the mouse out and making sure the water heater works) is to add some shades to the house. Susan was not intrusive, but she lives next door, and we didn't feel comfortable walking around the house as we pleased knowing we were completely exposed.
