About Francis & Anja Stileman
We stumbled across the village of Vejer in January 2000 and fell in love with the truly Spanish atmosphere and the wonderful weather. Where else in Europe can you lie on the beach in January?! Within a week we had bought our first property and we have been holidaying in the village several times a year ever since. We now have 3 properties, which you can see these on our website http://www.holidaysinvejer.com Having browsed our website, we hope you will decide to explore the area yourself and stay in one of our 3 properties, which we have lovingly restored. We are sure you won’t be disappointed.

A bit neglected
The house is in a great location & is quiet
The house is 400 years old & could be lovely but needs a bit of TLC
I am sorry you did not find the house up to standard and wish you had provided more details so that I could take action. The house is regularly decorated and fittings and furnishings are constantly being replaced to keep everything fresh and new. We have many guests who return every year.....
La Fuga was our base for 2 weeks exploring the Cadiz region of Andalusia. Our stay included some work time as well. We usually travel in the off season and this was no exception being mid November. This 500 year old property has everything you could want and more. It's situated on a very steep and narrow lane which made it all the more charming for us. We loved that it had a quiet patio as well as balcony view out over the plain to the coast and, yes, on to Africa! The extra bedroom allowed us to have friends visit. Everything was clean, neat and very quiet. The neighbors were friendly and Estrella was a great help. We also enjoyed her cooking lesson! All in all this was exactly the cozy local stay in a real Andalusian hill town that we wanted. Nobody seemed to speak English. Yeah! And there were so many local things to see and do. We will certainly recommend to everyone we know as well as think about a future stay. Thank you F and A.
Location, location, location .....
Tucked away on a tiny incredibly steep street, this is a delightful property. Comfortable and well equipped we had a lovely few days here and would return without hesitation. The location us perfect, a quiet street very close to Plaza Espana and easy walking distance of all that the lovely town of Vejer has to offer.
We were greeted very warmly by Estrella who clearly looks after the property very well. We especially liked having a morning coffee looking out to Mirocco and watching the birds soaring and swooping over the valley below.
This is a perfect location to explore this part of Spain the wild flowers were absolutely stunning and the beaches clean, u crowded and lovely; a million miles away from the developed sprawl of the Costa del Sol. Lots of pretty inland towns to visit, too with fab wildlife abounding.
Owners very friendly and easy to deal with, thoroughly recommended.
a charming little house in a picturesque town
La Fuga is a sweet little townhouse opening from a flower-filled patio which in turn opens directly, via an ancient wooden door, from one of the picturesque cobbled streets that lead up to the Plaza de Espana. We found it to be clean and well-equipped - a proper cooker and hob, good quality bed lined, and so on. It is a small house, the double bedroom in particular is very small, and some of the doorways are low, but the house is not at all claustrophobic or dark because you can have the door open to the patio and the french and other windows in the main living space offer expansive views, across to the coastline about 5 miles away. These views also look down over the town - e.g. there's a open air basketball court two floors below (although we only ever saw it used as a play space by small groups of young children) - which I liked it all the better for - you're in a "real" Spanish town, albeit incredibly historic and picturesque. The views across the town by night are also very charming.
The street is very quiet yet also just a couple of minutes from all the goings-on in Vejer. The patio is a cool and peaceful retreat and is used only by occupants of La Fuga although not entirely private from the entrances to the 3 other small houses leading from it - however we only once glimpsed anyone else. Unless you are elderly or have reduced mobility the slopes mentioned in other reviews won't present a problem, we were able to park below the house where a bend in the road offered room for 3 or 4 cars and didn't object to the small exertion required to get to the house (and of course it was all downhill on the way out!)
Beyond all that, the owner and the housekeeper were very kind and helpful; we had a couple of issues - nothing whatsoever to do with a problem with the house or with Vejer - and they went out of their way to help us sort things out.
Nice house in beautiful town
Well furnished and well equipped. Beautiful views from the window. Lots to do nearby - Vejer was lovely, with great bars and restaurants, and plenty of places to visit within easy range. Very relaxing house to spend time in. Only downsides were the TV with only Arabic channels, the climb from the car park with our luggage and not meeting Estrella. We only met a man, perhaps her husband, who wasn't too friendly!
Unfortunately, there is no longer a satellite providing English channels in this part of Spain, so Spanish t.v. only. As we are so close to Africa, also Arab and French channels.
There is no need for guests to carry luggage up to the house. Guests can drive past the front door of the house and offload, then park.
Estrella has just had the baby so may not have been around as much as usual but she can always be contacted if required.
A wonderful little place to stay !
The apartment is well equipped, tastefully furbished, and located beautifully as well as convieniently. You can take in great views to other parts of the old town and beyond (Atlantic shore & smt Morocco) over your breakfast, or watch young footballers below (or close the balcony door if you don't like the sound). Parking is usually a serious problem in southern hilltop towns such as, but not in Vejer, at least in Spring time.
The place is within easy reach of some remarkable stretches of coastline, as well as wide and lonely mountain forests. But beware: Stopping on the roadside is rarely possible, due to the layout involving sharp edges and deep drains. More seriously: vast areas are fenced off, side-roads which you find on your map (paper) blocked with iron-gates, and nobody around to enquire about the situation, or you chances to get to such-and-such a mountain.
The latter remarks have no bearing on the charm of the property referred to, of course, are rather a side-effect of Spanish politics etc. Nevertheless, as a keen field botanist I found several hundred remarkable plant species within just over a week, although I had to abandon searches in some areas - and spent time in all of the neighbouring towns and cities as well: Cádiz, Jerez, and Tarifa.
Trafalgar Square will take on a new meaning when you walk along the shores stretching out to Cabo Trafalgar, just a short drive down from Vejer.
Vejer is a white, Moorish hilltop town perched high above the steep gorge of the river Barbate. It is a magical place to explore with its brilliant white cobbled alleyways, iron-grilled windows, balconies and patios and dozens of small tapas bars and restaurants. There is a magnificent castle and beautiful church. The town square, which is situated just a few minutes walk from the property, has a wonderful old fountain with traditional ceramic Andalucian frogs, which spout water high into the air. There is a daily fruit/veg/meat/fish market. The beaches along this coast are amongst the best in Europe - huge stretches of golden sand that are - weekends aside - virtually deserted. The coast is dotted with small towns with bars and fish restaurants, from where you can watch the wind-and kitesurfers. The stunning mountains of the Alcornocales Nat.Park are a short drive away and there is golf & horseriding nearby. Or take a day trip to Seville, Medina Sidonia, Gibraltar or even Morocco.
