Description

Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday home in Abiquiu - Casa de Artista

A beautifully appointed Adobe home tucked away in the hills of New Mexic

So you know, we've been renting this house for quite a while but have just moved to VRBO so if you'd like to read some of our reviews, please scroll to the bottom.

My family home, nestled in Abiquiu, in the beautiful Chama valley, in Northern New Mexico. Abiquiu is a quaint and eclectic gathering of both native New Mexicans and those in the know.

The house was completely remodeling in 2005 from the roof to the floors. All new kitchen and amazing bathroom await your restful hat you won't find is a hastily appointed 'vacation rental', this is our home and it's been beautifully appointed with an eclectic combination of modern pieces and beautiful antiques.

Far from stuffy and boring, this house can be your jumping off point for all sorts of adventures in northern New Mexico, whether you're venturing into Santa Fe to peruse art galleries or headed to Taos to enjoy some fun in the snow, this house can be your idyllic escape from the hectic everyday.

It's such a wonderful and quiet place to be where the stars at night seem to go on forever.

The experience of being in the village of Abiquiu is such a unique perspective of life. It's not like the polished, touristy side of New Mexico, this house is located in the same place that people settled 100 years ago and continue with their lives.

The home is just a short walk to Georgia O'Keeffe's home and a short drive to Ghost Ranch. The area brings many repeat visitors and warrants new exploration with each visit. Take a drive out into the Chama River canyon to hike, visit the Benedictine Monastery, enjoy the hot springs at Ojo Caliente or simply embrace the wonderful nature of Abiquiu and allow yourself to enjoy it all.

Discover a new world this Columbus Day weekend, October 11th, 12th and 13th, as more than sixty Abiquiú artists open their studios from 10:am to - 5:pm to friends, old and new, during one of the most beautiful times of the year in Northern New Mexico. The Abiquiú Studio Tour is a self-guided, driving tour that takes visitors and collectors through the village of Abiquiú and the surrounding Chama River Valley – a landscape of imposing mountains, spectacular rock formations, and the glorious rivers of the Piedra Lumbra basin.

Complimentary maps are available at all the studios and local businesses.

If you're looking for a unique experience, this is the house for you!

Please read a few of our personal reviews-

Casa El Artista is the ideal place to unplug and escape the concrete jungle. The home is well equipped with modern appliances and very comfortable accommodations. The decor and ambiance of the home are the the icing on the proverbial cake, with beautiful original artwork, hardwood floors, authentic wood burning stoves and a bathroom that puts a high end spa to shame. The view is absolutely breathtaking and the gorgeous courtyard is the perfect place for star gazing in the night sky.

My favorite childhood memories are of the many road trips I took with my family to Northern New Mexico, where we explored all of it's beauty, history and culture. It has always been my dream that I would be able to take my children there and create memories for them. In a world where you are constantly inundated with instant gratification vacations, I never thought it would be possible, logistically or financially. A friend referred me to Casa El Artista and with it's perfect location and more than reasonable rate, I was afforded the opportunity to take my children to my favorite places in the world.

For 5 days, Casa El Artista became mission command for day trips to Santa Fe, Chaca Canyon National Historical Park, Sandia Peak, Camel Rock and Santa Fe ski basin. Being able to cook in and pack lunches for day trips, I spent less money the entire trip, than I would have for 1 day at Disney World for a family of 4.

Burk was very easy to communicate with and very flexible when I asked for another day at the last minute, so that I could take the kids to Ft. Sumner and the Billy The Kid museum on our way back to Texas. We will definitely be back, as there is so much more to explore.

It was an honor to stay at Casa El Artista and for my family and I, it truly is a place where memories are made and dreams come true.

What a wonderful place!! We had such a pleasant time at Burk's home in Abiquiu. The house is even more spacious and lovely than the pictures had us expecting. We stayed 2 and a half weeks, and our only regret is that we could not stay longer. Brenda was very sweet and helpful during our stay, and loaded us up with a huge pile of firewood -- we made fires everyday in the potbelly stoves. It felt special to be able to stay right in the pueblo village, with a very nice sense of history and kind neighbors. A good portion of our time was spent in the house as an artist retreat of sorts, and we also had a great time adventuring around the Abiquiu area. We went to the Poshuouinge ruins, on hikes around Ghost Ranch and the Abiquiu Lake and Dam, Echo Amphitheater, Plaza Blanca, the Monastery, Ojo Caliente, and of course Bode's just down the street. This was the perfect place to stay in an absolutely beautiful area! The next time we are in northern New Mexico we want to stay at Casa El Artista again, and for longer!

Staying in the childhood home of Mr. Jackson in Abiquiu was magical. Driving up the packed clay road-past the last residence of Georgia O'Keefe- and through the pueblo Abiquiu was how the magic began. The casita was decorated in a very comforting fusion of Hispano, Anglo, and Genizaro elements which maintain the feeling that you are actually staying in a pueblo village. Also, the overall aesthetic of the casita is a wonderful combination of folk, antique and contemporary design elements. That being said, Mr. Jackson has equipped this casita with more than enough appliances to make your stay easy and comforting. This includes a phone and an internet connection, in that, a large portion of rural New Mexico is off the grid.

Further, Brenda, who manages the property, is a gem. She can direct you to anything from farm land in Barranco, how to make a fire in the gorgeous vintage wood stoves, and where to get local regional chiles. She is an amazing resource!

Also, the neighbor Dexter Trujillo is a very gracious, courteous, and helpful man. This is true about everyone we met around the pueblo.

This casita can be used for seclusion with one of the most spectacular views I have ever seen. Also-because of its location-day trips to either Chama, the Taos pueblo, Espanola, and the Ojo Caliente Hot Springs were easy. Either way Bode's store at the bottom of the mesa where you turn into Abiquiu has everything you'll need. This includes organic foodstuffs as well. We got Tazo White Cumber Tea and Dr. Bronner's soap at Bode's general store!! Of course, we went to the Ghost Ranch, but we are foodies that are always looking for new exciting flavors. OMG. Like the Tewa-Spanish dialect of this region, the pueblo tribe’s cusine mixed with local hispano flavors is profoundly UNIQUE. We sampled food from Espanola to Chama through Ojo Caliente and El Rito. All within a day's exploration. Also, Brenda-and a dozen other people-clued us in to Romero's chiles in Espanola. With the chefly utensils provided in this casita we made our versions of the local fare. Eating while watching the indescribably beautiful New Mexican sunset. Totally magic!!!

Burk has a well appointed adobe tucked above the church in Abiquiu. Burk renovated the adobe, filled it with art and it is quite the getaway for people who like to really 'live' in a place.

We stayed for a week and wanted for nothing- my husband says, 'Every practical need and thensome was there, it was extremely liveable. Even the smallest issue was resolved immediately, despite Burk's being halfway across the country.'

Burk was very attentive to our needs and he checked in to make sure we were comfortable and well looked after. We were also checked on periodically when we ran into Burk's friendly housekeeper down at Bode's General Store- she had brought a load of wood for the stoves and even hand picked overnight logs for us and instructed us to put them on the fire before turning in for the night so we'd wake up warm and with coals left.

The entire casita has all one needs for comfortable living and the quiet pueblo makes it easy to unwind. The view of the Milky Way overhead is stunning, as is the Plaza Blanca- picturesque and full of technical scrambling and hiking. A nice soak in Burk's luxurious tub at the end of the day or a shower with a very groovy open air feel (awesome showerhead and hot water!) leaves you feeling spoiled rotten.

My web developer husband was able to telecommute for the entire week, which was impressive- the AirPort will allow us to come back more frequently without needing to take vacation time. We were very glad to be able to take time away with our dog, who relished exploring the pueblo and trekking through the Plaza.

I highly recommend Burk's house for people who aren't looking to be entertained or those who want to do destination dining. Stay the week- it is well worth it.

Historic and unique spot to stay

Nice little place, had everything that we required. The only thing is if you have any mobility issues getting in and out of the tub might be difficult. Otherwise a lovely VRBO.

Burk's property was lovely.

  • 5 of 5

When we first opened the door, our first impression was "Sweet!". Burk has done a great job with this casita. There was more room than I expected. The bed was comfortable (but watch your shins as it sits on a platform - after the first incident, it was no problem :-)) The patio was delightful. Sat out there often and even built a small fire one night in the fire pit. The kitchen was very clean as was the bathroom and everything you need was provided including TP and paper towels, and bath towels & soap. The casita was a bit hard to find so we had to call Brenda to show us the way up. Brenda greeted us with a smile and some Monk's beer to start our vacation. She's a sweet person and we enjoyed chatting with her for a bit. The only problem I had was getting up and down the hill to the property. That is probably more my own trepidation as a senior citizen. I give this property 4 1/2 stars (5 at the top as there are no 1/2 stars). Close to everything in Abiquiu and the surrounding area. Bode's Store is right down the hill and we did shop there a lot. You are approx. 20 min from Ghost Ranch where we went to every day. The Abiquiu Inn - about 5 min south of Bode's store had really good food. The Abiquiu Dam was a beautiful spot and about 10 min north on NM84. Thanks Burk for your hospitality- we had a great time!

Perfection

If you are in search of a charming, quiet, traditional style adobe home to launch your Abiquiu and Sante Fe adventures home, this is for you! I am an art history professor and stayed for two weeks. The home is in a culturally historic village and therefore looks rustic, yet has a beautifully equipped kitchen and bathroom. I felt safe, happy, secure and at home, could do my work AND enjoy vacation excursions, all in peace and quiet. I highly recommend this lovely property--the manager and housekeeper are wonderful!

Beautifully restored Adobe home

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay in this lovely Adobe home. It was comfortable and provided everything we needed for a great stay in Abiquiu. I was amazed at how the authentic Adobe construction really kept the house cool. It was quite hot when we were there but the house felt comfortable.

This is a good place to stay for those with an adventuring spirit & who don't mind being close to neighbors in an historic village. There are fantastic trails & vistas to explore in the area. The drive up to the home from Abiquiu plaza is a adventure in itself.

My only reason for not giving 5 stars is that this home does not have a great view or a comfortable porch to sit on. That being said, it is a great value, very comfortable, and there are views galore within a very short drive. As for the porch sitting, I did plenty of that at Ghost Ran with a view of Cerro Pedernal and the Piedra Lumbre.

We greatly appreciated Brenda checking in with us after arrival and the Monk's beer from the nearby Benedictine Abbey!

Authentic Adobe home in Abiquiu.

  • 5 of 5

Two weeks in Burk's Place exceeded our expectations. The home is very comfortable, and nicely renovated with a great kitchen and "spa bath!" Neighbors were welcoming and helpful...and very quiet. We loved the views from the bedroom window at sunset. Brenda was attentive and responsive to our needs...we found the home clean and well stocked with everything that we needed...even wine!

Hope to return again next year.

Marvelous!

  • 5 of 5

The house more than exceeded expectations. Brenda was a dream! Not only was everything wonderfully clean, but she took the time to check in with us.

We came with the intention of hiking our Christmas holiday week away, and we were quite pleased with what was right there in the area. Due to this, however, we didn't explore the pueblo as much as we would have liked. I expect we'll be returning. My family was completely enchanted with the area and its history.

Caution: the pueblo is not well lit. If you arrive after dark prepare yourself for that. Also, the directions we received to find the house were spot on, but that little road directly up to the house was quite rutted. You'd be better off if driving a car to go around the long way.
