About Sandra Wallop

Noll Wallop, the 8th Earl of Portsmouth, purchased Canyon Ranch from Bear Davis in 1889 and since that time the Wallop family has loved and tended to this sacred piece of ground. It is a true blessing that over a century later we are honored to live on the ranch and continue to take care of it.

In the early 20th century Noll and Buffalo Bill had shooting contests at the ranch where the lore tells that Noll out-shot Buffalo Bill. Another famous guest was Theodore Roosevelt who stopped to visit Noll as he was traveling through the Wild West on his quest to preserve America's most beautiful lands. It was during this visit that President Roosevelt determined that the Big Horn Mountains would become designated and protected declaring the area the Big Horn National Forest.

The Wallop family is rich with history in the area and in the State of Wyoming. The stories are numerous and if you are interested in hearing more we'd be happy to share while you are staying at the ranch.

Why Sandra Wallop chose Big Horn National Forest

The Hay Meadow House sleeps 6 in complete comfort with 3 large bedrooms complete with walk-closets and private bathrooms. The views from every window of the house are simply hard to grasp because they truly are some the most impressive in the region.

You will have plenty of opportunity to enjoy the views outdoors as well from any one of the 3 patios. The expanse of the hay meadow that butts up to the dramatic climb of the Big Horn Mountains will be a sight you won't soon forget.

If the Hay Meadow House isn't large enough for your party we also have a lodge that sleeps 10 and is VRBO listing 446402. Additionally, we do have other rental options available on the ranch if the Lodge or the Hay Meadow House have already been rented.

What makes this house unique

As the home of the oldest Polo Club in America, the Big Horn Polo Club was started in the early 1900's by the Wallop and Moncrieffe families at the Polo Ranch near Big Horn which is adjacent to Canyon Ranch. The Wallop and Moncrieffe descendants established one of the finest lines of horses that were provided to the Queen of England in her efforts to battle the Boer War. These Wyoming bred and trained horses were prepared for the battlefield through the game of polo assuring the Queen of brave equine soldiers in the field.

Today, a visitor can enjoy a game of polo at the Big Horn Polo Club every weekend during June, July, August, and over Labor Day weekend. World Class Polo has taken hold in Big Horn at the Flying H Polo club at the neighboring ranch where Patrons, their players, and grooms from all over the world play very fast and impressive high goal polo every week during July and August. If you like to gold the Powder Horn Golf Club is a short drive from the ranch offering a highly rated 18 and 27 hole play. Additionally, there is an 18 hole Municipal Golf Course which is further from the ranch. Each Golfing option offers magnificent mountain views.

The Sheridan and Johnson County area has many historic Indian battle sites of the late 19th century. These include Fort Phil Kearny, the Fetterman Masacre, and the Wagon Box Fight. The Little Bighorn Battlefield in Montana, the site of Custer's Last Stand, is only about an hour drive from the ranch. The Bradford Brinton Memorial and Western Art Museum is an absolute must see and only minutes from the ranch. King's Museum, adjacent to King's Saddlery in downtown Sheridan, houses an incredible collection of saddles and other Western memorabilia. The Historic Sheridan Inn was the site of auditions for the Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. This distinctive 'House of 69 Gables', has house many famous people including Earnest Hemingway.

Canyon Ranch itself has hosted many famous guests of its own over the 120+ years.

Canyon Ranch, Hay Meadow House

  • 5 of 5

The Hay Meadow House is in just a stunning location with unbelievable views! It is quiet, secluded and beautiful!

We had a big family reunion and rented both this and the Lodge. We had kids and adults from both coasts. There aren't many places left where kids can run free, catch fish, get dirty, and just have fun without traffic and strangers to worry about.

Had wonderful hikes biking and gorgeous sundowners on the porch, everyone loved it!

One of Our Best Vacations Ever!

  • 5 of 5

What a gem this property is; a stunning gem! One would be very lucky to stay in these gorgeous accommodation(s) and idyllic surroundings, as a couple, a group, or a family. Coming from San Diego, our stay at The Hay Meadow House, with its piece of heaven view of the Big Horn Mountains and hourly views of deer grazing in the grassland, transposed us into the majestic West and all its glory. What a place... and the family who own the ranch are fine people indeed. We look forward to returning as soon as we can!

Big Horn 100 trail race vacation!

  • 5 of 5

Look no further! This is THE place to stay in the Big Horn area. The house is even more amazing than the pictures portray. I even enjoyed cooking! Chopping fresh vegetables at the butcher block table while looking out at the mountains with the local deer wandering around the back yard made cooking a pleasure! The views out of the windows frame the view as if you are looking at a portrait of the mountains. The time of day and the setting or rising of the sun dictated the colors that stream across the mountain landscape. Talk about relaxing and chilling out...you cant beat it. We were there to run the big horn 100 trail race and were looking for a comfortable place to chill out before and after and we found it! Our brother in-law came out for a few days and we entertained a couple of friends 1 evening that were also doing the race. A quote from one of the guys doing the race "This whole trip has been a life's highlight. Dinner at the ranch set the tone for the whole weekend"

Sandra was great to rent from. She truly wanted us to enjoy our stay and have a wonderful vacation. We all work so hard day to day, week to week, year after year, vacations should be amazing and this one was!

The house is immaculate with everything you can possibly imagine! Great kitchen to cook in. Gas stove, high-end pots and pans, every utensil you can think of, nice wine glasses, bose stereo with an auxillary output so I could listen to my music on pandora. I could go on and on. She also had different smelling soaps in all the rooms. My hands smelled amazing all week. It's the small things in life sometimes, and Sandra thought of everything. The trip to town was only about 20 minutes away, but we were perfectly content on the range. Great property to walk around as well. The price is reasonable and worth every penny!

We did not bring any children with us but I was thinking of my nieces while I was there and thinking about how much they would have enjoyed it there.

I also happened to notice one evening that there was mint growing in the garden. I made myself some ginger tea with mint the next morning while watching the sunrise and thought wow, how lucky am I!

You will not be disappointed!

The area around Canyon Ranch where the Hay Meadow House is located includes the towns of Sheridan, Big Horn, and Buffalo and they each offer a variety of activities and a wealth of Western Frontier history.

Named the #1 Western Town in America by True West Magazine, Sheridan boasts historical sites, museums, outdoor activities, rodeos, shopping, world-class polo, and so much more!

Rodeo is a favorite sport in Wyoming, after all, we do have the bucking bronc on our license plates. We highly recommend the Sheridan WYO Rodeo held in mid-July for a week of non-stop activities featuring PRCA rated rodeo performances. In August, the Sheridan County Rodeo features some of the best local cowboys showing off their stuff.
