Overview

About the property

Orca watching haven

Whale Watch Cabin is located 1/4 mile south of Lime Kiln Point Lighthouse & State Park on the west side of San Juan Island. The steep shoreline offers excellent conditions for orca whales to come in close to shore while they forage for salmon in Haro Strait. This shore front property offers some of the world's best land based orca watching both in terms of frequency of visits and their proximity to shore. See video of the orcas passing along our property in the "Links to more information" section below.

Enjoy incredible sunsets, views of Vancouver Island, Olympic Mountains, whales, seals, sea birds, eagles, fox, and deer. There are lots of outdoor activity options nearby, including hiking trails on surrounding public lands, two national historic parks, and an orca interpretive center and gift shop at Lime Kiln State Park. Close by Deadman's Bay and San Juan County Park offer kayakers places to launch.

Unwind in this private haven of natural beauty while distant international shipping traffic glides by and city lights twinkle from Victoria, B.C. and the Olympic Peninsula. The cabin offers relaxed living with modest accommodations. A gas burning stove and oven allow cooking even if there is a power outage. The water system can provide over a week's worth of water even if there is a power outage. Contact us for specific details regarding amenities. Note that some of the reserved dates are held for family owners. If you contact us we may be able to clear the dates you want off the calendar and you can then book with us.

Please note we don't tack on separate check-out, cleaning fees, or booking fees. These are all included in the single price. Keep this in mind if you are value shopping.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you!

About Djarf Family

Our cabin is family owned and operated. Our parents built this small home / cabin and we are happy to share the experience of living here with our guests.

Djarf Family purchased this cabin in 1974

Why Djarf Family chose San Juan Island

Some of the best orca whale watching in the San Juan Islands. Not unusual for them to come in close to our shoreline.

What makes this cabin unique

Sunsets, wildlife, nearby lighthouse and whale watch park, lots of trails. Guests appreciate the whales and wildlife, sitting on the deck and garden all with great views of the water, Vancouver Island and Olympic Mountains.

Guestbook comments from the owner

I figured that maybe we would see a whale if we were watching all of the time, but we saw whales multiple times every day. We went out and about during the day and almost any time that we spent at the cabin we would see whales. If whale watching is what you want to do you will not be disappointed. We also saw dolphins, seals and eagles right from the deck. If I am not mistaken there is also a pair of bluebirds that were recently re-introduced to the area nesting nearby. Books on the local plants and wildlife are in the house, along with guides on how to identify particular whales. I was excited to see binoculars in the window sill, but honestly we seldom needed them to get a good view of the whales.

We have rented other vacation homes, but this was unlike any of the other homes we had rented. Other homes we had stayed at were all pretty similar - kind of like going to a hotel. This was more like going to a relatives house to stay while the relatives were gone. The fridge and cupboards where stocked with a little sign that said "Take what you need" in the cupboard. We had gone grocery shopping before we arrived but it was nice to have some spices and condiments available, as well as a cold beer and soda when we arrived. If you are looking for the most modern conveniences you will not find them all here, but we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and wished we would have planned for a week instead of a weekend.

We have chosen to return to whale watch cabin for the past 4 years. The privacy, peacefulness, breathtaking views and abundance of marine life is beyond compare.

The cabin is lovely and we treasure our time here. If you are looking for a place to rest, relax and rejuvenate then look no more. This place truly does restore the soul.

One of a kind

  • 5 of 5

This house is located in-between two land bank tracts so you have acres to yourself. Then of course there is the view. It is perhaps the best view on the island. We saw whales just about every day including transient orcas and Minke's. Deer came by every night. Eagles woke us up every morning. Magical location.

Beauty all around you!

  • 5 of 5

My daughter, son in law, my grand baby and I, spent 11 days in this paradise. The cabin is beautiful, comfortable and has everything you need for a perfect stay: well equipped kitchen, plenty of towels, comforters, etc. The cabin was very clean and cozy. The best thing is the view. Even if we were seating inside, we didn't miss anything since the side of the cabin facing the water is all glass windows. We saw so many Orcas! One day we saw nine in one hour! Also seals, otters, a black fox and sea lions. My daughter and son in law went kayaking and they saw more Orcas quite close and also a bald eagle.

San Juan Island is beautiful and this was one of the best vacations we have ever taken. We were all very sad to leave.

Wow!!!

  • 5 of 5

Whales every day, resident J&L Pods, transient pods, Big Mama the humpback, seals both CA sealions and harbor, grey fox, deer, racoons, eagles, porpoises and that's from the deck! We had 2 adults and four young adults. Loft was so nice the kids were all upstairs and they had their own bathroom. We cooked or BBQ'd every day and used the chiminea at night for smores. Kids loved the hammocks. We loved listening to the hydrophone, hearing the whales and seeing them out the living room window. Well appointed. This place will be part of our vacation to the San Juans from now on.

Whale of a time!

  • 5 of 5

My friends from childhood and I rented the house for a 5 night stay....we didn't want to leave. We had great whale shows almost daily, saw the fox and a few deer. We took some short hikes thru the land trust and to Lime Kiln. Everyone agreed that it was a great choice. The weather was beautiful, the accommodations superb. It was a good mix of function and hominess. We loved it. Some of the friends came from the midwest and it was worth the trip no question. They all loved it and thought we did really well in suggesting this cabin for our "retreat".

Best View on San Juan Island

  • 5 of 5

Whale Watch Cabin is aptly named. Located adjacent to Lime Kiln Park, it sits on the waters edge on a stretch of isolated land where whales are seen almost daily. The cabin is warm, cozy and well appointed, but the view is what you are here for. It is astounding! Stretching a breathtaking 180 degrees - from the leading edge of the scenic Olympic mountains, across to Victoria and Vancouver Island, and North up Haro straights - you'll never tire of its expansive beauty. The cabin has very large water-facing windows and there is ample glass throughout the house to soak in the view. A nice deck wraps around the entire structure. A quaint and cozy garden area adjacent to the cabin has ample comfortable seating, 2 hammocks, numerous overhanging shade trees, and a small chimera for an evening fire. It is the perfect place to relax on a sunny afternoon or have an outdoor picnic.

The kitchen, while not modern and a bit small, is well appointed with all the cooking utensils you'll need. The refrigerator was loaded with condiments, the cabinets with spices and all the items necessary to cook almost anything. A gas grill outside is available for that endeavor.

There is ample comfortable seating in the living and dining areas, a TV with Blue Ray player, WiFi, an i-Pod speaker, a huge array of books, and numerous games. However, quiet is the real treat here - opening the doors and listening to the gentle lap of the water on rocks and whales spouting as they go by.

Low water pressure is an issue here as the cabin is on a gravity system, but aside from the kitchen, we were never bothered by it. Water is a very scarce resource on San Juan Island and preserving it is a worthy cause.

The beds were mostly good, with ample blankets and comfy bedding, though a few of the mattresses are getting soft and could use updating.

The manager, Gray, was exceptionally helpful and pleasant to work with - promptly and completely answering every question and addressing every need. One of the owners met us when we arrived and gave us a wonderful tour, pointing out nearby Eagle nests and giving us the cabin's history.

There is no better place to stay if you want to watch whales - this property in uniquely and perfectly located for that pursuit. As a quiet, private and stunningly scenic getaway and a a place to decompress from the worries of the world, it has few peers. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and have already made plans to return. We feel lucky to have found such a special place.
