If you want to 'party” this IS NOT the place. If you want to just 'crash' it might be, but if you want to be able to RELAX and FEEL AT HOME, like or love to cook, read books (900+), watch movies (over 2,200+ movies & TV shows, 6 3D movies with 3D glasses), listen to music (38,000+ songs) and feel like you are at home with lots of amenities and attention to detail THIS IS DEFINITELY THE PLACE. It's the front half of a duplex on a residential street that was just completely remodeled, even completely re-wired, and most of everything is new (except some furniture) I live in the back half. Cooks gardens outside the kitchen; fresh herbs, aruglua & some lettuces.
I’ve had a difficult time explaining what it exactly is to my friends as there is nothing I know of like it. Here’s the genesis of the concept; I traveled a lot in the wine biz (20-40 weeks a year for a long time) and I got so tired of hotels (from okay to top notch), lobbies, parking hassles, lousy coffee & tea, hotel TV, no refrigerator, no way to prepare any food, having to eat out every night etc. Relaxing, escaping or unwinding on the road was hard to do in the sterile atmosphere of hotels. I wanted a place like "home" where I could relax and be comfortable, have a fridge for keeping the wines & food, a place to prepare it and ideally have the potential to entertain clients, friends or reps in a home like environment. I took some ideas from the top hotels & from B&B’s, but no matter where I stayed I very rarely got my 3 basic essentials to start a good day: a good night’s sleep on a good mattress with good pillows and sheets, the right temperature and fresh air; a good shower; and great cup of coffee or tea without having to leave my room to get it or pay room service prices, are all of those are here plus much more.
How I addressed my 3 basics for a good start:
For the bedrooms:
Queen beds with a new Sealy Posturepedic Memory Foam with cooling gel; high quality and thread count cotton sheets, flannel in the colder months; comforter & blankets as needed. Choice of 2 pillows from: Hotel Collection Hungarian Down (1 ea, $300+ retail per)– Firm for side sleepers or Medium for back sleepers; Memory Foam Hydraluxe Cooling; Nova Foam Memory Curve or Down Alternative (2). Temperature: Windows (3 & 2); ceiling fans; the wall heater is just out the bedroom doors, an electric blanket is available as is a room fan. Nights are normally comfortable, it’s 2.5 miles to the ocean.
Delta Lahara 2 in 1 shower head with good water pressure; Noritz tankless water heater so you will never run out of hot water; Charisma bath sheets & towels and a towel warmer (1 at a time). There is a choice of robes and slippers in the bedroom closet.
The morning wake-up:
Organic Whole Bean Coffee: You tell me what type of coffee you like & it will be here with a Cuisinart Supreme Grind Automatic Burr Mill to grind the quantity you choose however you like it. There are 6 ways to make ground coffee; Mr. Coffee 12-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker, La CafeTiére French Press, De'Longhi Retro BAR32 Espresso and Cappuccino Machine, Melitta Pour-Over Single Cup Brewing Cone, Hario V60-02 Ceramic Coffee Dripper, and a Primula stainless steel stove top espresso maker.
Pod Coffee & Cappuccino: Nescafe Dolce Gusto, I have Cappuccino, Caffé Americano (House Blend) 100% Arabica & Chococino (Hot Chocolate, no coffee) but I will get whatever your choice is.
I will also get whatever sweetener and milk or cream that you want .
Tea: I have a choice of 6 whole leaf teas some organic; an immersion tea pot; electric & stove top tea kettles. I will also get your choice of tea if I don’t have it.
Other: Fresh juice oranges from the Santa Monica Farmers Market with a Cuisinart Pulp Control Juicer provided. Fresh farmers market eggs will also be provided if desired or protein bars or cereal with bread bagels or muffins of your choice.
For unwinding and relaxing:
TV: Direct TV with HBO, the 1st bedroom has a 46” Sony & the living room has a 55” Vizio 3D TV. The living room has Bose Acoustic Mass 6 speaker surround sound. I will record on the DVR any shows you would like to see if you let me know in advance in either or both rooms.
Movies: You will have a choice of over 2,200 movies to choose from that I own & will provide you like a local Netflix from the list you give me. The list is on my website on the amenities page. There is a blu-ray player in both the living room(3D) and bedroom.
Books: About 500 in the house, lots of cookbooks and food & wine related, fiction, non fiction, sports, many award winning etc. There are clip on book lights in the night stands. The list is on my website on the amenities page.
Computer: There is ASUS Book Vivo touchscreen netbook in the living by the electrically reclining leather couch, free high speed WiFi.
Music: 35,000+ songs are on the computer in the Amazon Cloud Player with several playlists to choose from; you can just put it on shuffle on any playlist or I will create a playlist for you by artists, genre, style etc. that reflect your taste. The music can be played through all the Bose surround speakers or just the ones near the TV via Bluetooth. There is also am Unplug portable Bluetooth speaker that will play in the kitchen, bathroom, bedroom or front porch if you choose. The complete music list on my website on the amenities page.
Lighting: Ambiance and mood were the leading considerations, so all of the lights in the house are on Lutron Diva dimmers except the ceiling fans which have a different dimmer for the lights. The bar, dining table and living room all have Besa glass hand blown fixtures. The Living room has 5 sconces and the dining table has a globe pendant (no overhead lighting), the bar has pendants but no direct downward light. The kitchen has “canned” very bright LED’s in the ceiling and small amber hidden LED’s under the cabinets.
Flowers: There will always be flowers in the bedroom, living room & on the dining table and/or the bar. All from the farmers market or the garden outside, orchids when in season and almost always non fragrant unless requested otherwise.
Front porch: There is a Jack Post Patio Glider with tables on each side for you beverage of choice and/or ashtray.
Cooking: The complete list of cooking tools and equipment is on my website. There is a Brinkman dual BBQ grill outside the back, both a charcoal and a propane side with a burner. There is a lettuce and herb garden outside as well that will change with the seasons,
Ice Cream: I will stock the freezer with a pint of your favorite (locally available) ice cream.
Bar et al:
Glassware (6ea); Spieglau red & white wine glasses, Govino stemless wine glasses, Champagne flutes, Schott Zweisel Tritan double rocks glasses, Schott Zwiesel by Charles Schumann Cocktail Cup Tritan martini glasses, Authentic British Tulip Beer Glass with Imperial Pint Etched Seal. There are also Beer Essential glasses (4 each labeled in the corner kitchen cabinet); Classic Pint, IPA, Saison & Porter. There is a decanter on the bar shelf.
Tools etc: Charles Schumann’s recipe book American Bar, bar tools, shaker a bottle trivet on the bar shelf. In the top drawer just out of the kitchen there is; an Oggi Wine opener, waiters corkscrew, foil cutter, wine charms made for the house by my friend Barbara, a Vacu-Vin pump & corks, a Brookstone wine preserver, a champagne stopper and a soda stopper (my preference for sparkling wine).
Ice: All from filtered water; Cubed or crushed from the freezer door, 2 Tevolo King silicone ice cube trays (6 each per tray 2” square cubes, 12 tota), 6 Tevolo Ice Spheres (2.5” round spheres) and 9 natural soapstone “On The Rocks Chilling Stones” in the freezer which can be used to shill any beverage without dilution.
You have a choice of one of the following: beer, wine, sodas or sparkling water.
Other stuff of note:
There is an Everpure H-1200 water filtration system under the sink that comes out of the small faucet in the top of the sink (it’s labeled) for room temp water or cooking and it also filters the water to the fridge & freezer (which filters it again). The tap water isn’t bad but this is much better and you don’t have to buy bottled water.
Appliances, Cabinets etc. (All are new):

My mom & grandparents bought this duplex and I now live in the back unit. I love music, food, wine and was an avid golfer and played in college. I was in the restaurant business and then in the wine business for over 25 years before retiring to spend time with my mom for 5 years before her passing. I cook for fun, friends and family, I have catered parties and cooked meals for a week at a time for a couple in Montecito when I lived in Santa Barbara. I know the city well and the surrounding areas & will gladly assist in any way I can with whatever you would like to do or wherever you want to go.
Lance Bowling purchased this house in 1963
I've received only 5 Star reviews (60+) which are listed on my website, relaisinla.com. Written in the guest book:
A perfect place to stay while visiting our son at LMU. So comfortable and luxurious. We need to come back just to enjoy the cookbook library! Thank you for being such a gracious host!
This visit to Lance's amazing home is my 3rd time staying with him. Each time it awesome to see how his place keeps getting better and better, and his hospitality is why I have been back each year with no hesitation. Lance's two bed room house is in a very safe neighborhood which is one of the great reasons to stay and is mere minutes away from LAX. It is very easy to get your rental car and part off the street at Lance's in minutes of arrival. Lance sets up a personal menu of items for you and has a great list of food, drinks, and home supply so you can make your stay as comfortable as possible. I am a coffee lover and he has every type of machine and coffee you could imagine! He made trips to the farmers market for us for fresh fruit and flowers and even stocked the fridge with our favorite La Croix! The two rooms are large and have amazing beds, the kitchen is spotless and has everything you could need to make a meal or snack. The washer and dryer is nice for longer stays to do laundry and not have to pack as much. I can't say enough good things about Lance, his hospitality and his house. I will keep going back as it is one of the best places I have stayed and would highly recommend you staying here too!!
Lance is the friend we never had in Los Angeles. He has been always helpful, accommodating, nice and friendly, and he is also a very very good cook! He got in touch in advance asking us what type of breakfast do we like, which coffee do we prefer, what kind of pillow do we use to sleep on.. but we didn't realize all that was included in the deal, and really IT IS!
The place is spacious, clean and well furnished. There are two big bedrooms with very comfortables king beds and tv in both the rooms. The living room has two relaxing sofa, a big 3D tv with an endless collection of movies and music, an home stereo system and a large selection of books, so leave your Kindle at home! There is a touch screen laptop available 24/7 with wifi and in every room you can find a fresh bunch of flowers. The kitchen has everything you can wish for cooking with a complete range of utensils, hoven, microwave and dishwasher. In the fridge there are ice cream, beverages, cheese, wine, fresh vegetables and fresh fruits provided by him directly from the L.A. farmer's market. And don't forget to ask for his damn tasty dark chocolate and almond cookies!!!
We don't know how to thank Lance for the good times we had during our stay, and also for all the tips he gave us for visiting L.A., seeing the best places, eating in the right restaurants.. and avoiding the traffic jam! And last but not least, we have had the chance to live as true americans and not only as tourists.. we must say it's really worth it experience.
We have been very positively impressed by the reviews the people left on the various online booking websites and on his own page (except for the only crazy no stars review on AirBnB......!), so we decided to give it a try. We couldn't have made a better choice, we really felt at home. So thanks again to the best host of the west coast!
I travel a lot and always stay at hotels. This time I decided to stay at Lances home.
The reason was because of 5* reviews. I wanted to experience it myself.
Lance created an environment that you feel at home and more. Most importantly, he lives next door and he is available to help you out.
Oh, yes. The fresh fruits from farmers market one of the kinds. Everything you see in the pictures is real.
I have one recommendation. Please, remove any food in the jar, cans and etc. that is being open by previous tenant from refrigerator. Other than that, yes I would recommend his house to my friends.
Lance thanks for sharing your home with us.
My daughter and I stayed here as she checked into Loyola Marymount University, a mere 5 minutes drive. It had all the comforts of home, safe and secure. Everything was well thought out and very comfy! We had coffee and breakfast before leaving for all day shopping trips. And the freshly squeezed oranges were heavenly! A full-sized refrigerator made it easy to keep leftover pizza. And there was plenty of fresh fruit delivered by the owner, Lance Bowling, who was friendly and helpful with just about anything! We enjoyed watching a movie with surround sound that didn't cost extra... We even made popcorn to really feel at home! The location was near LAX so you could hear the airplanes, but it didn't keep me awake at all! The shower was amazing, beds were comfortable, kitchen was clean and well organized/stocked and the living room was great for relaxing! I will return to Relais in LA again and again!!
Thanks Lance for the wonderful hospitality...and for the bottle of wine, vanilla ice cream, chocolate chip cookies, fresh peaches, avocados, strawberries, bananas, pears, figs, blueberries...and for the great tasting organic coffee!
It was truly amazing and better than staying at a hotel!
Working in the hotel industry as I do, I tend to select hotel locations for getaways, but I occasionally find home rental an even better solution, and that was definitely the case here! This was primarily for a mother-son getaway, and since LA was a fairly central solution for both of us, this was a no-brainer. My significant other joined us for part of the trip as well, and he also really enjoyed it. Neither my son nor I knew that much about LA, so with a limited four-day trip to the area, it was important for us not to spend too much time traveling to/from the home, and this is ideally situated close to the airport. There was some air traffic, but I rarely noticed it, and I found it very comparable to the noise levels one might experience in a major city (and as we do in Dallas). Additionally, both before and during our stay there, Lance went above and beyond to make sure we had numerous options and information about what to do in the area. As just one example, I mentioned hiking as a possible interest, and upon arriving, I found what looked like a brand-new book on area hikes. When I mentioned a need to print out a ticket, Lance kindly did that for us and passed it along through the mail slot. He was very accommodating and available for anything we might need without being intrusive. Also upon arrival, Lance gave us a full tour of the facilities and amenities available to us, which included everything from the type of pillows we preferred to beach towels and chairs. We enjoyed the comfort of using a well-appointed home and even watched one of the 3D movies Lance recommended to us on his home system. For those who enjoy cooking, he's equipped the kitchen with just about every device, utensil and spice you might need - we even found containers we could use to pack a small picnic for the beach. We did pay the modest price increase for the use of the second bedroom (there is an option not to use that space), and it was well worth it. What's most unusual for any home rental was an extensive list of breakfast foods and treats Lance purchased for us in advance and provided us free of any additional cost to enjoy during our stay. Every morning, each of us enjoyed freshly squeezed Valencia oranges from the farmers' market for our morning OJ, along with local, organic foods - from eggs and fruits to cookies and ice cream. We greatly appreciated all the attention to detail and thank Lance for his gracious hospitality.
My family and I cannot thank you enough for all the support and hospitality you provided during our month long stay. Your preparation to comfort my son and I as we went through transplant surgery at UCLA, was not only gracious, but a gift from heaven.
Your home was completely furnished with everything anyone could desire. You have great taste in design and the layout of your home made recovery very comfortable. We still crack up at the 6 different pillow options and 5 different coffee types you offered us upon arrival, but this only shows how the dedication you have to being the best host in LA shows in everything you do.
I could go on for days, but the most important thing I want to convey, is Thank You! This surgery and expierence was very stressful and coming home to your beautiful home was very comforting. Just know, as we look back on this expierence, the quality of our healing could not have been possible without you being a part of your team.
