Overview

About the property

A true home, cozy, comfortable, luxury amenities, great kitchen, a 3D & 2 HDTVs

If you want to 'party” this IS NOT the place. If you want to just 'crash' it might be, but if you want to be able to RELAX and FEEL AT HOME, like or love to cook, read books (900+), watch movies (over 2,500+ movies & TV shows, 6 3D movies with 3D glasses), listen to music via Alexa on an Amazon Echo Dot (2nd generation plus guide book with instructions), Amazon Music Unlimited (tens of millions of songs to choose from) through Bose surround sound speakers and feel like you are REALLY at home with lots of amenities and attention to detail THIS IS DEFINITELY THE PLACE. It's the front half of a duplex on a residential street that was just completely remodeled, even completely re-wired, and most of everything is new (except some furniture) I live in the back half. Cooks gardens outside the kitchen; fresh herbs, aruglua & some lettuces.

I’ve had a difficult time explaining what it exactly is to my friends as there is nothing I know of like it. Here’s the genesis of the concept; I traveled a lot in the wine biz (20-40 weeks a year for a long time) and I got so tired of hotels (from okay to top notch), lobbies, parking hassles, lousy coffee & tea, hotel TV, no refrigerator, no way to prepare any food, having to eat out every night etc. Relaxing, escaping or unwinding on the road was hard to do in the sterile atmosphere of hotels. I wanted a place like "home" where I could relax and be comfortable, have a fridge for keeping the wines & food, a place to prepare it and ideally have the potential to entertain clients, friends or reps in a home like environment (6 max without my permission). I took some ideas from the top hotels & from B&B’s, but no matter where I stayed I very rarely got my 3 basic essentials to start a good day: a good night’s sleep on a good mattress with good pillows and sheets, the right temperature and fresh air; a good shower; and great cup of coffee or tea without having to leave my room to get it or pay room service prices, are all of those are here plus much more.

How I addressed my 3 basics for a good start:

For the bedrooms:

Queen beds with a new Sealy Posturepedic Memory Foam with cooling gel; high quality and thread count cotton sheets, flannel in the colder months; comforter & blankets as needed. Choice of 2 pillows from: Hotel Collection Hungarian Down (1 ea, $300+ retail per)– Firm for side sleepers or Medium for back sleepers; Memory Foam Hydraluxe Cooling; Nova Foam Memory Curve or Down Alternative (2). Temperature: Windows (3 & 2); ceiling fans; the wall heater is just out the bedroom doors, an electric blanket is available as is a room fan. Nights are normally comfortable, it’s 2.5 miles to the ocean.

The shower:

Delta Lahara 2 in 1 shower head with good water pressure; Noritz tankless water heater so you will never run out of hot water; Charisma bath sheets & towels and a towel warmer (1 at a time). There is a choice of robes and slippers in the bedroom closet.

The morning wake-up:

Organic Whole Bean Coffee: You tell me what type of coffee you like & it will be here with a Cuisinart Supreme Grind Automatic Burr Mill to grind the quantity you choose however you like it. There are 7 ways to make ground coffee; Mr. Coffee 12-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker, La CafeTiére French Press, De'Longhi Retro BAR32 Espresso and Cappuccino Machine, Melitta Pour-Over Single Cup Brewing Cone, Hario V60-02 Ceramic Coffee Dripper, Primula stainless steel stove top espresso maker and a Willow & Everett Cold Brew Coffee Maker.

Pod Coffee & Cappuccino: Nescafe Dolce Gusto, I have Cappuccino, Caffé Americano (House Blend) 100% Arabica & Chococino (Hot Chocolate, no coffee) but I will get whatever your choice is.

I will also get whatever sweetener and milk or cream that you want .

Tea: I have a choice of 6 whole leaf teas some organic; an immersion tea pot; electric & stove top tea kettles. I will also get your choice of tea if I don’t have it.

Other: Fresh juice oranges from the Santa Monica Farmers Market with a Cuisinart Pulp Control Juicer provided. Fresh farmers market eggs will also be provided if desired or protein bars or cereal with bread bagels or muffins of your choice.

For unwinding and relaxing:

TV: Direct TV with HBO, the 1st bedroom has a 46” Sony & the living room has a 55” Vizio 3D TV. The living room has Bose Acoustic Mass 6 speaker surround sound. I will record on the DVR any shows you would like to see if you let me know in advance in either or both rooms.

Movies: You will have a choice of over 2,200 movies to choose from that I own & will provide you like a local Netflix from the list you give me. The list is on my website on the amenities page. There is a blu-ray player in both the living room(3D) and bedroom.

Books: About 500 in the house, lots of cookbooks and food & wine related, fiction, non fiction, sports, many award winning etc. There are clip on book lights in the night stands. The list is on my website on the amenities page.

Computer: There is ASUS Book Vivo touchscreen netbook in the living by the electrically reclining leather couch, free high speed WiFi.

Music: 35,000+ songs are on the computer in the Amazon Cloud Player with several playlists to choose from; you can just put it on shuffle on any playlist or I will create a playlist for you by artists, genre, style etc. that reflect your taste. The music can be played through all the Bose surround speakers or just the ones near the TV via Bluetooth. There is also am Unplug portable Bluetooth speaker that will play in the kitchen, bathroom, bedroom or front porch if you choose. The complete music list on my website on the amenities page.

Lighting: Ambiance and mood were the leading considerations, so all of the lights in the house are on Lutron Diva dimmers except the ceiling fans which have a different dimmer for the lights. The bar, dining table and living room all have Besa glass hand blown fixtures. The Living room has 5 sconces and the dining table has a globe pendant (no overhead lighting), the bar has pendants but no direct downward light. The kitchen has “canned” very bright LED’s in the ceiling and small amber hidden LED’s under the cabinets.

Flowers: There will always be flowers in the bedroom, living room & on the dining table and/or the bar. All from the farmers market or the garden outside, orchids when in season and almost always non fragrant unless requested otherwise.

Front porch: There is a Jack Post Patio Glider with tables on each side for you beverage of choice and/or ashtray.

Cooking: The complete list of cooking tools and equipment is on my website. There is a Brinkman dual BBQ grill outside the back, both a charcoal and a propane side with a burner. There is a lettuce and herb garden outside as well that will change with the seasons,

Ice Cream: I will stock the freezer with a pint of your favorite (locally available) ice cream.

Bar et al:

Glassware (6ea); Spieglau red & white wine glasses, Govino stemless wine glasses, Champagne flutes, Schott Zweisel Tritan double rocks glasses, Schott Zwiesel by Charles Schumann Cocktail Cup Tritan martini glasses, Authentic British Tulip Beer Glass with Imperial Pint Etched Seal. There are also Beer Essential glasses (4 each labeled in the corner kitchen cabinet); Classic Pint, IPA, Saison & Porter. There is a decanter on the bar shelf.

Tools etc: Charles Schumann’s recipe book American Bar, bar tools, shaker a bottle trivet on the bar shelf. In the top drawer just out of the kitchen there is; an Oggi Wine opener, waiters corkscrew, foil cutter, wine charms made for the house by my friend Barbara, a Vacu-Vin pump & corks, a Brookstone wine preserver, a champagne stopper and a soda stopper (my preference for sparkling wine).

Ice: All from filtered water; Cubed or crushed from the freezer door, 2 Tevolo King silicone ice cube trays (6 each per tray 2” square cubes, 12 tota), 6 Tevolo Ice Spheres (2.5” round spheres) and 9 natural soapstone “On The Rocks Chilling Stones” in the freezer which can be used to shill any beverage without dilution.

You have a choice of one of the following: beer, wine, sodas or sparkling water.

Other stuff of note:

There is an Everpure H-1200 water filtration system under the sink that comes out of the small faucet in the top of the sink (it’s labeled) for room temp water or cooking and it also filters the water to the fridge & freezer (which filters it again). The tap water isn’t bad but this is much better and you don’t have to buy bottled water.

Appliances, Cabinets etc. (All are new):

Thomasville cabinets with brass silverware pulls

Granite counter tops, bar and mantle

Burnished Straw Plank Cork Flooring with a Chef's Design Ultra Comfort Gel Mat by the sink

Frigidaire Gallery Counter Depth Side by Side Refrigerator in Stainless Steel

About Lance Bowling

My mom & grandparents bought this duplex and I now live in the back unit. I love music, food, wine and was an avid golfer and played in college. I was in the restaurant business and then in the wine business for over 25 years before retiring to spend time with my mom for 5 years before her passing. I cook for fun, friends and family, I have catered parties and cooked meals for a week at a time for a couple in Montecito when I lived in Santa Barbara. I know the city well and the surrounding areas & will gladly assist in any way I can with whatever you would like to do or wherever you want to go.

Lance Bowling purchased this house in 1963

Why Lance Bowling chose Los Angeles area

I've received only 5 Star reviews (100+) which are listed on my website, relaisinla.com. There's no other place like it, completely remodeled (even rewired) and designed for this purpose, it has everything you could need or want to relax, cook, read, watch movies, listen to music catch up on sleep or whatever you want to do. Dedicated parking spot, no hassles in a quiet residential neighborhood.

Easy to get almost anywhere including Malibu, Beverly Hills, Hollywood, downtown LA, amusement parks, shopping, restaurants, movie studios, many beaches and museums. Everything is here for a very comfortable, relaxing and enjoyable stay whether it's for business, pleasure or a combination of both.

What makes this house unique

A guest said, "This completely redefines the business & vacation rental guest experience" with personal choices, luxury appointments and amenities. You have complete privacy and everything you need to enjoy yourself already here plus concierge like service if you desire. I provide fresh fruit, fresh flowers, eggs, organic butter, and oranges for juice from the Santa Monica farmers market. You also get bread, bagels or muffins, many coffee & tea choices (with 7 ways to make coffee including espresso), your choice of dairy products and sweeteners for it, ice cream & cookies, beer, wine, sodas or sparkling water(I have filtered water) plus a fully stocked pantry. Free WiFi with high speed internet and an ASUS touchscreen netbook for you use.

Completely remodeled just to be a vacation & business rental with great attention to detail. Almost everything is new, incredible kitchen with EVERYTHING, herb garden, 3D TV with 3D glasses (more available), Bose surround sound, lots of amenities that you won't find other places unless they cost a whole lot more. Westchester Golf Course is at the end of the block with a park just on far side of the golf course with a swimming pool open in the summer. Shopping and restaurants within blocks.

I will gladly help you plan your trip, make suggestions or reservations, for wherever you want to do, eat or see. I also have a GPS you can borrow that has traffic notices & is programmed to take you 'home' from anywhere. I also have a FastTrak transponder that you can use, it lets you use HOV lanes and you just reimburse me for the tolls.

I believe there is somewhat of a "quid pro quo" contract between myself & my guests in that I will do anything and everything I can to make your stay the very best it can be and all that I ask in return is that my guests leave me a review without me having to "nag" them for it. I spend many hours on each guest's stay, please take the 5 minutes or so to write the review, I take a lot of pride in every one.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Realis is the place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

Lance is the most gracious and accommodating host. He is very attentive and organized so the minute you walk through the door you feel at home. The house is clean and very functional with modern and vintage accents. Very comfortable beds, large towels and plenty of space for my husband and our two grown sons. The coffee in the mornings and fresh orange juice is a real treat. Realis is fully equipped, Lance has thought of everything. Thank you Lance, we will stay with you again - no more hotels for us when visiting family in LA. Surfs Up!!

Our Best VRBO experience ever!

  • 5 of 5

Staying at Relais was the best VRBO experience we have ever had! The amenities provided are way above average and the property is comfortable, functional, and well thought out. Lance provides a personal service-oriented touch and he strives to provide a unique experience. He more than succeeds and I have to say that hospitality is Lance’s talent.

The home is tastefully decorated and there are fresh flowers in every room. There’s everything you need for an amazing breakfast. We didn’t need to run out to the grocery store when we first arrived which was really nice. Oranges for fresh orange juice. Fresh fruit and eggs from the farmer’s market and English muffins. Loved having our choice of coffee and tea. And have Lance choose your bottle of wine, he picked a delicious Riesling for me. And lots of LaCroix sparkling water in various flavors. All of this was part of our stay at no extra cost. This is NOT typical of VRBO properties and this level of service was much appreciated.

There are multiple types of glasses and complete dish sets. There truly is every kitchen gadget that you can imagine. We’ve had problems at past VRBO’s when we’ve barely been able to scrape enough dishes and pots and pans together to have dinner. No worries here!! The dining room table and chairs are very comfortable. The bar stools have padded seats with backs, they also swivel. I’m not a fan of wood stools with no backs so I was very pleased with these chairs.

After having spent 5 nights in various motel rooms, it was wonderful to have our choice of sheets and pillows. We slept as well as we do at home! The bed is very comfortable. So nice that there are TV’s in each bedroom as well.

The bath towels are sumptuous and huge. I noted the brand name so I can purchase some when I get home. It’s very thoughtful to have a lighted makeup mirror that is on a desk. I could do my makeup while my husband took his shower. It was great that I could keep my makeup out on the desk and not have to put everything back every time I used it. Lance provides salon quality shampoo and conditioner as well. Nice!

We loved using Alexa, every type of music with just a voice command. There are 2 comfortable couches in the living room with a huge TV and fantastic sound system. One of the couches has electric recliners built in.

My husband appreciated the well-lighted off street parking and hardwood floors.

Thanks for a great stay!

Five Stars Isn't Really Enough

  • 5 of 5

Some may overlook this property due to its proximity to LAX however, if you do this, you are making one of the biggest mistakes of your stay in LA and you haven't even arrived yet! In all seriousness though, neither me nor my traveling companion ever realized just how close we were to LAX. The property has been purposefully retrofitted to reduce noise and I would not have even known that had the owner not shared that information with me. Honestly, I had no complaints whatsoever, period. That is a difficult bar to reach in any case but it gets better: there are so many positive things to say about every aspect of my stay that terms like "wonderful experience" and "amazing stay" pale in comparison to the reality of what the owner has obviously gone to great lengths to create for his guests. I mean the book collection alone is like an adult playground of the mind. I hesitate to use that term because it has nothing to do with pornography. The owner (I would use his name here but I respect his privacy as much as I respect him as a human being which is immeasurably kind, accomodating, and always interesting to talk to. He makes it clear that you get to set the boundaries of how much you wish to interact with the owner but it is my opinion that you are missing out if you don't get to know him. As we were from Texas and with the hurricane, he showed nothing but sincere concern and luckily we live far enough north that we were not affected. I would stay here again, and again, and again. I feel I have found a home away from home and as I travel to Los Angeles frequently, I hope this unit is available the next time I visit, and the one after that, and so on! My real rating is ten stars out of a possible five!

This was a perfect retreat for my daughter and I to meet up after traveling from overseas. Close to LAX but you don't feel like it. Close to shopping, beaches & freeway access. Lance is a great host and leaves nothing for you to want for. Comforts of home and loved the entertainment system

Everything You Want Plus More

  • 5 of 5

Do not pass up the opportunity to stay at Lance's place! My family of 5 (3 teenagers) stayed at Relais in LA for 6 days. We had all the comforts of home like TV's in the bedrooms and living room, comfortable beds and bedding, and a spacious kitchen. Lance has made sure you have all you need to cook and relax. We especially loved eating breakfast together at the granite-topped bar each morning before heading off for a day in LA. It was wonderful coming "home" to a quiet neighborhood. Lance is very helpful with tips for best beaches, restaurants, and places to visit. We had a great time and will stay there on future trips out west! Thanks Lance, and we know your future guests are going to LOVE the new outdoor dining area when you get it all complete!

I'm sorry but it's not suitable for children under 8 as it's far from childproof.

I accept PayPal, Credit Cards via PayPal or Square on site, personal & travelers checks and cash.

I own over 2200 movies, have HBO & Amazon Prime movies all for free, if you choose a pay per view movie you will need to reimburse for it or them.

It's $30 per guest, per night for each guest above 2 ($180 per week) or $30 per night if both bedrooms are used by 2 guests (also $180 per week).

Check in and Check out are flexible, I will do the best to work with your schedule but they are contingent upon other arriving & departing guests. If I'm not booked the next day you can leave whenever you want, if I have incoming guests then checkout is 10 AM, however I will gladly store your luggage if you have a late departure. The same applies for check in, if I'm still getting the place ready you are welcome to drop off your things and go do what you want. Normal check in with departing guests leaving the same day is ballpark 4 PM but again it can be flexible.

There is a really well stocked pantry plus I supply some breakfast foods, fresh orange juice, farmers market fruit, milk, ice cream & cookies etc.

For more detailed info and to access my PayPal please go to my website: http://www.relaisinla.com

Check in & check out times are flexible with your schedule and whether I have guests leaving or arriving the same day.

If I have guests leaving or arriving the same day then checkout is by 10 AM and check in time would be ballpark 4 PM.

Once again, this is not a party house and I don't allow more than 6 people in the house at any time without my advance permission.

Again, I will work with your schedule the best I can and you are welcome to store your luggage for the day if you are leaving & drop off your luggage earlier than check in if you are arriving.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions.
