About the property

A two bed room, 1 1/2 bath cottage with a spectacular view.

The Cozy Cottage is an updated farmhouse with two bed rooms, a well equipped kitchen and two living /family rooms. Each room has its own air conditioner and the cottage is easily warmed by a furnace , room heaters or and electric fireplace. It has one complete bathroom and a half bath off the master bed room. There is a breakfast nook in the eat in kitchen. The kitchen is supplied with most small appliances, a microwave, and a full size range but no dishwasher. The old farmhouse has cable TV and WiFi for guests who like both old and new. While most things at the Cozy Cottage are compact the view and out side are generous. The Cottage sits on almost and acre of lawn and the owners aren't picky about parking on it you need the space. The whole front of the house is a porch complete with rocking chairs and tables that can make this the most popular living/dining room in the house.

About Curtis Absher

We purchased the old farm house so that we could update it and enjoy it while sharing in the care of elderly parents that lived next door. Curtis' Dad

built the neighboring home place in which Curtis grew up and he played with the boys that lived in the Poff house. So while location was the main incentive to buy the house there was also a sentimental facet. In those care giving years, we generally came for a week but sometimes those weeks got extended. When we got the house livable we were able to give the parents the privacy of their own home and we had a short retreat. We never had the illusion of making a 'purse out of a sow's ear' as local folks might say but we wanted to blend the past with the present as we furnished and decorated the cottage from attics, consignment and yard sales, and thrift shops. We wanted the cottage to reflect its surroundings and the people of the area. We selected photographs and paintings that featured Virginia artists and scenes that could be seen only a short drive from the house.

Occasionally a Kentucky picture or book may show up in the cottage, something that we bring from our Old Kentucky Home. But as a Blacksburg native and a Hokie, Curtis still has much loyalty to his Old Virginia Home.

Curtis Absher purchased this cottage in 2005

Why Curtis Absher chose Blacksburg

The Cozy Cottage stands out because of its simplicity. There are some unique antiques and some plain old used furniture. But there is a blending of old and new; for example, the master bedstead is antique metal ( as is the rare find metal dresser) but it has an up-to-date memory foam mattress. The property used to be out in the country but now it is less than a 1/4 mile from Blacksburg's City limits. In minutes you can be in town or back out in the mountains. It is almost like having a mountain chalet with pizza delivery service. And no one has ever complained about not finding a place to park.

What makes this cottage unique

In addition to convient location the Cozy Cottage has cable TV, WiFi, a washer and dryer, an almost completely furnished kitchen ( no dish washer). Many guests have called it their home away from home. It is not fancy but it is homey!

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had such a great time in Blacksburg at the Cozy Cottage. Friday we walked around campus, walked in the new indoor football practice building & visited some of our favorite spots downtown. Dinner was at the Social House and it was awesome, highly recommend! Saturday we floated the New River from Eggleston to Pembroke, a full 7 hours of catching fish. Saturday night we had dinner at Cabo Fish Taco & then visited more favorite spots downtown, along with the new Benny Marzanos for late night pizza. This morning we had Carol Lee doughnuts & coffee on the front porch & took in the views. Overall just a great weekend.

Perfect Cozy Cottage

  • 5 of 5

Our family just got back from a weekend stay at the Cozy Cottage. We hope to go back again next year! The location was perfect...only 5 minutes into town. The house is bigger than it looks in the pictures. We really enjoyed having two separate livings rooms, since we had a 2 year old that was up early. Great house to stay at!

Owner's Response: WE are pleased that your family was comfortable in the Cozy Cottage. The bedrooms are small but most guests spend more time in the two living areas than the bed rooms-- and we suspect that that only one of the TVs is used on the sports channels. We look forward to having you back.

Great stay

  • 4 of 5

Thank you for the wonderful weekend at the Cozy Cottage. The location was great with respect to downtown and the stadium. We had plenty of room for everyone and the house was nicely equipped with coffee, towels, sheets, blankets, etc. We enjoyed our stay

Owner's Response: Thank you for selecting the Cozy Cottage as a place for friends to meet. That is what we wanted to happen there. We know it is not fancy but guests seem to like the simplicity of it all. Can't take credit for the location; I grew up next door but we drive fewer local miles when we are in Blacksburg than any place we have lived or visited. Come back.

Nice and cute cottage

  • 4 of 5

We spent three nights in this nice and cute cottage for my daughter's graduation. We hosted a small party there and it had everything we needed. When the weather is good, the view is gorgeous. We particularly like the comfortable beds, which gave everyone a sound sleep and full rest each night. The owner Curtis is very friendly and responsive. He always responded to my questions promptly with helpful information.

Owner's Response: Thanks for staying at the Cozy Cottage and congratulations on your daughter's graduation. Each person has a little different definition of a comfortable bed so I'm glad they worked for you. We like the comfort of the memory foam mattress in the master BR as well. Hope to host you again.

This was a fun alternative to a hotel for a football game!

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed staying at the Cozy Cottage- and one of the best things was the owner, Curtis. He was very responsive to questions prior to the rental and then made sure that we knew how everything worked when we got there. It was true southern hospitality! Sitting on the front porch with my coffee looking at the mountains was wonderful- this really did feel like a vacation rather than a rushed tailgate weekend. The home is cozy- make sure you look at all the pictures on the wall to see some of Blacksburg history! We enjoyed staying there a lot. Note the description is very accurate, so you are pleasantly aware of everything when you open the door!

Owner's Response: Thanks for your review. We took pains in getting pictures on the walls that represent some of our favorite things. One is a photo of an old log barn that stood on a farm down in the valley. So glad I took it since the barn was removed soon afterward. I just hope that it was put back together in a place that it is appreciated. We knew it as "Bax Johnson's Sheep Darn."

The Cozy Cottage was perfect!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Cozy Cottage for a football game and absolutely loved every minute of it. There was ample room and amenities for our group of 5. The house is exactly as described and extremely charming. The location feels like you are far away but it is so close to downtown Blacksburg and Virginia Tech. Not to mention the view from the front porch is beautiful. The owner is receptive and easy to contact; this was hands down one of the easiest and most relaxing rental experiences I've ever had. I would love to stay there again.

Owner's Response: And we'd love to have you back. We don't want anyone's vacation to be marred by missed details, and if we learn of any we try to correct ASAP. Thanks for affirming the accuracy of our advertisement. The house was old when we bought it but we wanted to make it comfortable without making it fancy. We tried to keep it close to it's vintage (plus flat screens and microwave that weren't on the scene when it was built.) Please come back. There is a lot to do in the area when Tech is not playing football.
