About the property

Ideal base for visiting nearby Bordeaux and the region's many vineyards

If you want to make the most of all that Bordeaux has to offer but don’t particularly want to stay in town, Le Chai d’Arcins could be the ideal base for you. It is a 15-minute drive from Bordeaux and yet just a short walk from the leafy banks of the Garonne. A traditional "chai à barriques" or barrel cellar, Le Chai d'Arcins has been lovingly converted into a bright and spacious home while preserving many of the original structural elements such as the exposed sandstone walls and oak beams. The ground floor is open plan with a fully equipped kitchen opening onto a partially covered patio area for outdoor dining.

Upstairs the 3 bedrooms, utility room and bathroom open onto a wraparound gallery that overlooks the living room.

There is a double bedroom with ensuite shower room and WC, two bedrooms with 2 single beds in each and a bathroom with WC. There is also a cot in one of the twin bedrooms.. The utility room is equipped with a washing machine and ironing facilities. A third WC is situated on the ground floor. The vineyards of the Premières Côtes de Bordeaux appellation are in the immediate vicinity of the house and those of St Emilion and the Médoc under 40 minutes away. Arcachon and the Atlantic beaches are just a little over an hour's drive.

Wonderful Stay at Le Chai d'Arcins

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from a lovely week's stay at Le Chai d'Arcins and enjoyed this beautiful house and pool during some warm Bordeaux weather. The house was perfect for five adults and ample room to stretch out and enjoy leisurely meals and time together. Our hostess Carmel Godmet was wonderful with suggestions on how to take the Tram Line into Bordeaux and also tasting wine at a local vineyard in the town of Latresne. Take a look at the book she leaves in the flat and read it thoroughly as there are suggestions for some good local restaurants and the local vineyard and also the one supermarket in the area that is open on Sunday as we arrived on a Saturday and needed items for the kitchen. There is also a local market in Latresne that we discovered I believe open on Sundays and Thursdays that is also excellent. Make sure you travel into the city of Bordeaux and try to find time to explore the many interesting areas while in this part of France. We drove every day to different areas such as Saint-Emilion and Arcachon for new adventures. We will surely return on another trip to Bordeaux and stay here once more at this lovely house as this was one of the best VRBO experiences I have had. V. Lofland Middlebury CT, USA 25 July 2017

Very nice place to stay

  • 5 of 5

This is a very nice place to stay when visiting Bordeaux and surrounding area. The house is very lovely, with an equally beautiful garden surrounded by trees which makes the pool very private but it still gets plenty of sun. The house is very tastefully decorated and well equipped and is situated in a little hamlet not far from the Garonne river. There is a nice cycle track along the river so you can cycle into Bordeaux in 20 minutes or in the other direction, out into the countryside. Latresne itself is a small village with a very nice market on Sundays. In fact the house is ideally situated – not far from Bordeaux yet practically in the country. Carmel and Emmanuel were very helpful with advice prior to our arrival and welcomed us warmly, giving us lots of information and tips. They recommended visiting St. Emilion which is just over half an hour away and we were delighted we followed their advice as it is a very beautiful medieval village well worth visiting quite apart from the wine-tasting. We enjoyed Bordeaux itself very much and it is only a 15-minute drive away from Le Chai. All in all, we would very much recommend renting this house and would love to stay there again ourselves for a longer holiday.

Lovely home, easy access to the city & vineyards

  • 5 of 5

We certainly couldn't have asked for a more beautiful holiday stay. Carmel & Emmanuel have created such a lovely home and well, the garden, it's just idyllic. The house was perfect for our family's exploration of Bordeaux, close to the city & easy access to the vineyard routes. I highly recommend this lovely home for those who want a balance of seeing the city but want idyllic space & privacy. The garden is just beautiful and the hosts are very kind

Fitted the bill perfectly

  • 4 of 5

After 3 months of constantly being on the road it was great to finally 'drop anchor' at Le Chai for 4 weeks. We found Carmel and Emmanuel to be extremely friendly, helpful and knowledgeable hosts. The house has been very tastefully decorated, maintaining it's Bordelais charm, character and rustic French flavour. Convenient to everything, including supermarket, Sunday markets at the village of Latresne and the beautiful city centre of Bordeaux (easily reached in 15 minutes by car - or car plus a tram ride over the bridge). The house was comfortable and very clean, with a well-equipped kitchen (which we very much appreciated). The welcome bottle of Dourthe No. 1 introduced me to what is now my favourite wine.

It was also only 100m to the river where we took relaxed walks along the road lined with trees changing to their beautiful autumn colours. We took day trips to the pretty coastal town of Arcachon, famous St Emilion, Talmont-sur-Gironde, visited several chateaux/wineries. All in all a great stay and a great spot!

A great summer holiday

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at "Le Chai". The stone barn is wonderfully restored with lots of lovely details. Carmel and Emmanuel are really nice and caring.

The pool is large and we can recommend using the ping-pong table and the barbecue on a regular basis :-)

When not "at home", trips to the vinyards in the Medoc, St. Emilion and up the Garonne, to the Atlantic ocean and into the city of Bordeaux of course, are a good thing to do and just around the corner.

When we come back to the Bordelais, we will definitely stay here again!

A wonderful family holiday

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful holiday at Le Chai with our extended family. It was spacious , clean and we loved the decor which makes the most of the original barn features. We loved the terrace courtyard which was great for barbequeues and and we enjoyed our lazy days at the pool though there were not too many of these as the house if very well located for sightseeing. Bordeaux is really close though you would never thnk it when you walk down the road to the river. The owners were very helpful with restaurant tips ! We made some trips to the coast and visited Saint Emilion and some vineyards in the Médoc. All without spending too much time in the car. All in all a memorable family holiday .

Only 7 kms from the centre of Bordeaux, Le Chai is an ideal base for visiting Bordeaux and its many vineyards. Walkers and cyclists will appreciate the nearby cycle track which winds its way through 60 kms of the woods and vines of the Entre Deux Mers to the historic bastide town of Sauveterre de Guyenne.

Tennis and horseriding facilities in the village of Latresne, 2 kms away. Excellent restaurants in the area.

Nearby Bordeaux (UNESCO Heritage Site)-offers all the leisure and cultural activities of a large historic city.

The ocean and it's rolling surf is an hour's drive away, as are several soft-water lakes for windsurfing, sailing, water skiing.

The vineyards of Loupiac and Cadillac within easy reach, St Emilion just a 30-minute drive away. The Médoc a little further.

Many lovely Bastide villages to visit, each with its farmers' market.
