Located on Rutherford Island near Christmas Cove, this 2 Bedroom, 2 bathroom renovated 1920s Sears Catalogue cottage is framed by natural ledge and lovely perennial gardens. Watch the pleasure and fishing boats from the deck while you enjoy lobster prepared by local fishermen's co-op. Harbour Ledges is only a 15-minute drive to Damariscotta, Pemaquid Beach & Lighthouse. Boat rentals and quiet island beach are within 5 minutes of the cottage. Kayak rentals and golfing are a short drive away. The cottage is tastefully decorated with antiques, heirlooms, art and oriental rugs. Master bedroom with queen size bed and guest bedroom with full size bed are located on the second floor. The kitchen is host to a 1920's Garland gas stove as well as modern amenities: microwave, dishwasher, coffeemaker, toaster oven, Dansk china, bar ware. The living room has an easy to operate gas fireplace to take the chill off those sometimes cool Maine evenings. Cable HDTV, wireless, internet, VCR/DVD/CD included.
I am a semi-retired holistic nurse and homeopathic educator and consultant who resides in Florida with time to enjoy Maine in the summers. After raising my family in S. Berwick, Maine and returning to school for healthcare and nursing, I spent time in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine before moving to Florida in 2009.
Donna Peaker-Ritzo purchased this cottage in 1998
After a long hiatus from Maine, I began what became a three year search in 1995 to find a property in mid-coast Maine. I kept returning to S. Bristol and specifically Rutherford Island. From the moment I saw this 'little house on the harbor', I knew it was a keeper. The house is co-owned by myself and my daughter, Julie Erickson, a Maine resident.
Harbour Lodges is a lovely 1930's style New England home on the shore of an inlet known as The Gut. It is so very peaceful, the main noise being acorns dropped by squirrels onto the roof! We have spent a week looking around the Pemaquid and Boothbay area, where life seems so slow and we have found rest and relaxation in the lovely old house. Not everything is old. The heating is quite up to date and the beds are definitely not old horse hair ones. Overall impression, 3000 mile trip, well worth it!
Donna and her daughter have done a wonderful job of making this cozy little cottage a home away from home. The kitchen was well equipped, the sitting rooms accommodating, and the bedrooms and baths spacious enough for two couples to be very comfortable. We especially enjoyed the deck out back with its view of the cove - relaxing for our morning coffee and evening cocktails! Donna was very helpful with information about boat rentals and things to do in the area and we found this to be the perfect location to enjoy the surrounding area from Bath to Boothbay and Pemaquid to Demariscotta! Lots of wonderful hikes, drives, seafood spots, and shopping within 1/2 hour of the house. At first I was disappointed that there was no laundry facilities at the cottage, but we found a lovely drop office service 20 minutes away. I would recommend Harbor Ledges to anyone.
We enjoyed our 11-day stay on Rutherford Island in this lovely 1920's Sears' kit cottage. It's beautifully decorated and has a good kitchen, including the 1930's stove. (I grew up with a stove that required matches to start it; this was no challenge.) The kitchen is well-furnished with appliances and dishes and food preparation equipment. Everything was as it was represented to be.
The two bathrooms are light and bright, there are plenty of towels and the showers were great.
We loved the front porch and the deck overlooking the water and spent quite a bit of time on both. We also walked a lot on the island, including in the Rutherford Island Preserve, well within walking distance of the cottage, and from end to end of the island, about 2.3 miles long.
Of course, we enjoyed Maine seafood and fish at several restaurants in Damariscotta, visited the Farnsworth Museum in Rockland, Maine, with its Andrew Wyeth, N. C. Wyeth, and Jamie Wyeth paintings, and some local galleries as well.
I would recommend this property to friends and relatives easily. The owner called to make sure we had everything we needed and to tell us not to hesitate to call if something were lacking, but there was no need.
We stayed from Sept. 1-11, and were completely satisfied. S. Quaintance, Buffalo, NY
We loved this property! The home is comfortable, well furnished and the deck was a real plus! We enjoyed meals on the deck with water views. Donna was the perfect host and communication with her was easy.
We have stayed at this cottage twice. It is ideal for 2-4 guests. The porch overlooks the harbor and is a perfect spot to
relax. It is well equipped for cooking and very comfortable sleeping. The South Bristol bridge was under construction during
our stay which created more noise and traffic than usual. It appears to be finishing up and the added walkway and town dock
will be a bonus.
Donna, thank you so much for all of your suggestions and help even before our vacation started. Your home was lovely and welcoming not to mention how comfortable all of the furnishings were. Inside and out it is so well maintained. Brought me back to my idea of a classic summer home on the water with beautiful gardens front and back. Especially liked the blend of modern with some very impressive antiques. The 1930's gas range was one of my favorites. We would not hesitate to come back again and most likely extend our vacation to two weeks. Thanks for sharing your home. Pat and Bill
