This recently remodeled 2-bedroom, 900 sq.ft. apartment is part of a classic, 100 year old farmhouse on a 20 acre property near Clinton Lake. The lower level apartment features a private entrance, private deck, handmade oak furniture, kitchenette, full bath, and (for your privacy), soundproof walls and ceiling. If you so choose, outdoor adventure is right around the corner. The property has a one-mile, walking path available for your use and is a short bike to the Clinton Lake wildlife area. In fact, our road dead-ends at a free boat-ramp and fishing location. Two kayaks are available and complementary. The new Rock Chalk Park will be up and running this summer with year-round events. The city of Lawrence is only 3-miles east. We have lived in Lawrence for 25 years and are willing to provide any info that would make your stay perfect. Feel free to book a night, weekend, or week's stay, with nearby activities for anyone, ages five to eighty-five! Or come just to enjoy the peace and quiet.
Pattie and John have lived at Rancho Verde for 8 years, and in Lawrence for 25. In their spare time they refurbish old homes. Along with the 'sister house' you will be staying in (described below) there is a second house on the property. This one was the childhood home of New York Yankees great, Ralph Hauk, who managed and played on the team during the hay day of the Yankees storied career.
John Green purchased this farmhouse in 8
This home is one of two remaining 'sister houses' built roughly 100 years ago, individually, by the father of five girls. He built one for each girl! We know this because after moving and re-furbishing the house, the woman who owned it prior to us drove by to tell us how it all happened! ...that's right, she drove. And had no problem hustling up our stairs! Ralph Hauk's home (also on the property) was built with rocks in-between the two by fours. This was to protect them from Quantrill's raiders, at a time when Jayhawks carried rifles! After all, they lived down the road from the only African American community, in a town founded on 'northerner' values, by people willing to die for them. And die they did, inciting the beginning of the Civil War.
You will be staying in a house that is part of the storied Lawrence History, in-between the town of Lawrence, KU, and Clinton Lake. Kayaks, bikes, hikes, and sailboat rental are all at your fingertips; but you are also 10 minutes from a nightlife and restaurant scene that are often written up in travel magazines.
My family was visiting me at school and we needed somewhere better than a crumby hotel to stay. We really enjoyed ourselves that weekend! I would definitely recommend Rancho Verde!
We stayed at Rancho Verde for a week while we visited family near Topeka. We enjoyed staying in the country - a very different experience for us folks from Southern California. The apartment was comfortable and clean and while we were in the country, we were just minutes away from grocery stores and other convenience. Lawrence is a charming town with good restaurants and fun shopping. John was great and very helpful! We were able to kayak on the lake - it was lots of fun! Next visit to Kansas we will definitely look John up and stay there again.

We enjoyed the tranquil atmosphere (away from: light pollution, traffic, etc.). It was plenty of space for our family and friends to visit with us. The children ran around the trees and listened to the birds flying about. The golden moths swarmed around my husband and I as we hiked along the Walking Path together which brought back memories of living close to nature for the both of us. The bed was very comfortable and spacious and the use of the TV(X-Box/Internet) allowed us to tune in to our regular shows through YouTube. We are looking forward to spending time away from home at Rancho Verde again and getting a opportunity to meet the host. Though he wasn't there he had Amy and Izzy to provide us with what we needed who were helpful and kind. We want to thank John for accommodating us. "May the Lord bless him and the Ancestors continue to protect him and his family. Aw....the Irish books were GOOD READS!
A return visit to Rancho Verde was just as wonderful as our previous visits. We love staying here and highly recommend a stay at this amazing farmhouse apartment! Many thanks to John for being such a great host! Great memories have been made at your wonderful home!
My husband and I stayed here for 5 days while moving our son to Lawrence. I am so glad we chose Rancho Verde for our stay. Moving is stressful and this was the perfect place to recharge each day. The setting is beautiful. The guest rental is the entire lower level of the house, very spacious, and has its own private entrance and private deck. The weather (heat index of 110°) prevented us from taking full advantage of the hiking trails and stone fire pit. Hopefully next time, the setting is gorgeous. Loved hearing the frogs sing at night. Despite the heat, the entire space was cool and inviting at all times. The wi-fi worked great, we streamed videos and used the internet easily. The king bed was very comfortable and beautifully designed by John the owner. John goes out of his way to make the property welcoming. It was delightful meeting him and spending time talking but he was also very respectful of our space. Would highly recommend!
We recently stayed with the Greens during a trip to Lawrence for my son's basketball tournament. I was a little nervous about doing a vrbo since I had never done that before. John was very welcoming as soon as we pulled in, helped us with all of our stuff and showed us around the apartment. It was a perfect set up for my 16 year old son and I. We were very impressed. The best part was being only 5 minutes away from the sports pavilion! We were able to come and go as we pleased and made several trips into town. John was very helpful in sharing some of the top places to try in Lawrence and some different things to see in our downtime. It was extremely hot and humid during our stay so didn't get a chance to try out the kayaks but my son enjoyed taking the go cart for a spin around the track. Beautiful and peaceful piece of property that was relaxing to come back to after a day of running around. Only reason I didn't give 5 stars was that the wifi/internet was very spotty so hard to watch Netflix/tv at night or check our emails. ( Bothered my 16 year old more than me- it was nice to be "electronic free" for a few days). John offered to figure out how to get it working a little better but I said we were fine so he was great about trying to make our stay as comfortable as possible. Would definitely recommend this place and will for sure try VRBO again when traveling! Thanks for your hospitality John and Pattie!
The kids and I liked the place and the owners were really nice. The only downside was the internet connection was extremely slow to non existent at times. On top of that we had little to no cell coverage in the unit The location was good and place was clean and I would recommend it if you don't need to be plugged in.
The property is located on rural land, within walking distance to Clinton lake. Whereas Lawrence has shopping, restaurants, nightlife, and everything you would expect from a college town, the lake provides great boating, fishing, windsurfing, kite boarding, beaches, hiking, and general outdoor fun...right in your back yard.
