Harlem Garden Apartment!

Space 1,050 sq. ft.
Property type apartment
Minimum Stay 4 - 5 nights

About the property

Art-filled One Bedroom With Garden Access And Studio.

Our beautiful, art-filled garden apartment is now available for holiday rental!

Just two blocks from the subway and several grocery stores, smack in the middle of happening Harlem, walking distance to Columbia University, nine blocks from Central Park, it occupies the garden floor of the house we live in. We are a European-American family, and well familiar with both ways of life, so you will have no surprises!

Walk through your private entrance garden into the living room. With a large screen TV and a comfortable pull out couch, it can serve as your second bedroom. A large massive oak dining table accommodates up to six people for your own Harlem dinner party! The kitchen is fully stocked, and a dishwasher takes care of the clean up. A long art-filled gallery leads to the back of the apartment, were your bedroom overlooks the quiet garden. The bathroom is modern and clean. And your huge walk-in closet will house all of your clothes along with the suitcases, skis, golfing gear, whatever!

Off the bedroom you can work in your own studio, a tiny enclave where you can write your emails, browse the web or start that novel you have been thinking of writing. Internet access is free! From the studio you can pop into the ivy-covered garden, with its hammock, large dining table and flowering vines.

About Katrin Zimmermann

World-traveler, born in Germany, multi-lingual, renowned designer with my own company- and yes, I renovated this apartment! We live right upstairs!

Katrin Zimmermann purchased this apartment in 2001

Why Katrin Zimmermann chose Harlem

Harlem is my love. Since I was a kid, I thought of Harlem as this great, multi-cultural place- and I was not wrong!

Anyone who lives in Manhattan would love to live here, with our beautiful old townhouses and lush gardens!

What makes this apartment unique

This house was a blank canvas when we bought it- nothing to stop my implementing my ideas of a modern, clean, high-end designed home.

Stay in Harlem

  • 4 of 5

We loved our stay at this spacious garden apartment. This was our very first VRBO stay so we weren't exactly sure what to expect. I loved the interior space of this apartment - what a difference between staying in a cramped hotel room and this place! I loved the scale of the interior spaces. The size of the kitchen, living, bedroom and bathroom were all generous.

Despite the fact that this is a ground level unit there was still plenty of natural light throughout. Although we never used it, there is also a lovely shared garden behind with table, chairs and twinkly lights at night. We were surprised how quiet this part of Manhattan is. It was quiet enough for the windows to remain open our entire visit! The location was great as well - only 3 short blocks to the 116th street station. Two short blocks to decent espresso (Harlem Coffee). The "commute" to 42nd Street is amazingly quick as well.

Our thanks to our host Katrin for providing such a special place to stay!

My husband was alittle apprensive staying uptown in Harlem but it could not have been better! Every restaraunt we went to from the Red Rooster to the little italian restaraunt on 119th street that offered the BEST pizza I've ever had, was perfect! My husband even went grocery shopping at Whole Foods up the street a few times.

Katrin has thought of everything. The townhouse was warm and cozy after a day on the town. Several nites I took a warm bath in her large tube and comfortable bathroom. The subway is just a few blocks away. We traveled out to Jersey City & the Jersey Shore to see family. Never had a problem. Katrin even had large umbrellas for us when we had a day of rain and walked through Central Park just five blocks south.

The townhouse is spacious and comfortable we hope to visit in the summer to enjoy the beautiful garden in back.

Exceded expectations!

Thank you!

New York, New York, USA

Old school Harlem with a nice modern flair.

  • 5 of 5

My only regret is we didn't stay longer. I'll start by saying that. It was the weekend of my wedding and I needed somewhere to stay near the church where I was getting married the day before and after. Katrin's place was a perfect location. It's located in an old school Harlem neighborhood accessible to everything; transportation, supermarkets, shopping areas, restaurants, old school bar/clubs, churches, mosques, 125th Street (Apollo), N. Central Park & other historic Harlem attractions. All within walking distance. I am a native New Yorker and Harlemite for many years. I just needed a quick getaway near yet apart from everyone where I could have some peace and down time before I got married. The nearest hotel blocks from my church was a consideration. But I realized I did not want Ultra Modern overly busy and too small. Just quiet private lovely comfortable spacious and peaceful. For the price the hotel was charging I realized I should at least get what I wanted. I had reservations because I only saw pictures of Katrin's place and didn't know if what I saw was what I would get. It is that and more. Privacy was important to me. You have your own private entrance and the block is peaceful yet within walking distance from all the action you'll need. I was within walking distance from my church and the tavern where I had my rehearsal reception brunch the day before. It was also within walking distance from my relatives but they knew I needed my space :) I was happy for the downtime after a hectic couple months prior with my childhood best friend and maid of honor and then right before my wedding for quick toasts with my bridesmaids before we left for the church and then after with my new husband before we left for our honeymoon. Katrin's apt is immaculate; spacious yet cozy and comfortable, light and airy, artsy and SOULFUL and she has not compromised the building's oldschool Harlem flair. I realized also that most of the awesome artwork in the apartment is her own! The backyard garden is lovely and was one of the reasons I selected the apartment but unfortunately I didn't have a chance to have early morning coffee outside as planned. You will not regret staying here. As ridiculous as this sounds with me living in New York I actually was trying to think of an excuse to return! I know one thing: if I ever need a quick local getaway I will be calling on Katrin and not a hotel.

Rent this place and enjoy!

Great place to stay in Harlem, Manhattan

  • 5 of 5

This is a great place to stay. The apartment is very clean and comfortable, with spacious rooms, and convenient location to local markets and the subway, Central Park, and Columbia University. It's a bit of a trek to lower Manhattan, but if you know/learn the subway system, it's really no problem at all. Katrin made lots of recommendations for restaurants, music, and shopping in Harlem - we loved the Red Rooster, Paris Blues, and Harlem Shake the most!
