Villa Pellicanos exceeded all expectations
I turned 50 in April, 2019 and 9 months before that date started looking for a venue that could host 12-15 of my friends and family. I landed on Villa Pellicanos because the pictures looked great and its property features and location to Sayulita made it sound very appealing.
Well, from the minute we all stepped on the property, we were enchanted. Everything is gorgeous The kitchen/dining room area, inifnity pool and meeting area/game room are @ the top of a hill with a 360 view of the ocean, Sayulita and the jungle. It's like a movie set. then you follow a path to hit all of the housing. There's the main Casita w/ 4 different bedrooms all having a gorgeous view of the ocean and town. then 4 more indiv. casitas all with a view. The photos do not do this place justice. The architecture is gorgeous and the grounds are expertly maintained w/ flowers blossoming everywherer. We spent most of the 5 days of my vacation just hanging out on the property as it was so relaxing to sit poolside or read in the gameroom area. We also used Mariana to cook 4 out of the 5 dinners. Her food was always fantastic - we had chicken mole, shrimp enchiladas, fish tacos. We planned the first meal ahead of time and then met with her the first day to plan food hte rest of the time. And breakfast is included - every morning she put out coffee, 3 juices, yogurt and granola. Mariana accomodated diet needs and even made a gluten free/daily free carrot cake for my birthday!
The villa was extremely clean and the staff was very friendly. Juan the property manager was always available for help.
The property is about 10 minutes walk to the edge of Sayulita and 20 minutes to the far edge of town (there's a hotel with a yoga studio there we hit daily and it was a good 20 minutes.) We never used our car once we landed but I can see why some folks may want to use golf carts. The once criticism I saw of the place is that it is not for folks with any challenges walking -would agree with that - but otherwise the hills were not that challenging. (I am from Seattle though.;)
One concern I had with having 12 people together was whether it would feel like there was enough space for people to hang out or have some alone time without feeling all on top of each other. Well, the place is huge and there was plenty of room to go find a corner to read or lay out.
How often in this age of hype does one have their expectations so grandly exceeded? they were for all of 12 of us!
Great house located near the town of Sayulita, accommodates a large group.
We were there the week after Christmas.
The positives: This house, which is more like a private resort is great. The caretakers were very nice, and helpful and the rooms were cleaned every morning. Beautiful views and great pool. The house sits on a bluff, so got a good work out going to and from rooms(casitas).
Negative: 4 of the casitas are on a path which also leads to the beach (not private), with a wooden gate (door) leading to the beach. Second day there, half of our group of 11 walked the beach and there were people on the beach, again not private, and when we returned 2 of the casitas had been robbed. Clothes, toiletries, head phones, sunglasses. There are small safes located in each room, which were used for passports and wallets. The caretaker then locked gate on path to the beach for the remainder of the week as well as place a guard dog at the gate at night. We didn’t let that ruin the rest of our time there. Always leave valuable(jewelry, laptops) back home anyways. We were told this was the first time this had happened.
Wonderful/gorgeous vacation spot with some logistical challenges
I rented Villa Pelicanos for my family's Christmas vacation. As there are no other pictures other than the generic ones on their website and all other vacation rental websites, I was naturally nervous to see what the property really looked like. The property is extremely beautiful and well kept up which I now understand is due to Javier (lives on site). Everything is open air which i love but obviously its something to take into consideration if you are visiting in the warmer months as humidity would have been pretty miserable. A few of the rooms had A/C units but there were technical issues with them so the box fan they provide is really the only way to cool the 4 casitas and 2 master bedrooms.
This property is very unique and captures the authentic Sayulita vibes but it is NOT wheel chair/elderly friendly as there are hundreds of stairs on the property and the ramped areas are extremely steep. Put it this way, you are getting a really good workout going up and down the steps from the main living/kitchen/dining/pool area to the casitas below. This didn't bother me but definitely a challenge for my parents and siblings who are carrying their kids and their kids belongings. We had about 90% of our meals prepared for us during the 6 days we stayed there. I was told Mariana would be our chef and we ended up having 2 different women cook for us for the first 4 days. I had read reviews of Mariana's cooking so i was excited to try it so i emailed the Juan (property manager) and asked whether Mariana would be cooking at all or not.
In regard to our dining experience overall, it was not the very best. I think my family found it to be awkward at times and the staff wasn't overly friendly or welcoming. I told Mariana I wanted the staple items (bottled water, soda, alcohol, ice) replenished until we left but kept having to locate Mariana to ask them to buy more. Communication was definitely lacking and you're not provided Mariana or Javier's number so if you can't locate them, you have to email Juan and wait for him to reach out to them which seems crazy considering Javier and Mariana live on the property.
I found the overall planning of this trip to be somewhat difficult in that if I didn't ask about a thousand questions, those details/facts would not have been provided. I was constantly having to reach out with questions because the answers were simply not made available on the website or HomeAway listing.
advice: rent golf carts, snorkel, boards, etc
Incredible Stay at Villa Pelicanos
We had a group of 14 staying at Villa Pelicanos for a handful of days. Everything here was top notch - airport pickup, views, cooking, rooms, decor, location! The pictures do not do this place justice. You'll be blown away if you stay here.
All of the casitas have their own personality and are fantastic for large groups or either friends or strangers (would be perfect for a yoga retreat). We loved spending time together in the common areas (pool, living area, dining area and kitchen) and then being able to go back to our own little quiet houses in the evenings. Expect a bit of a walk from some casitas to the common area, but it is well worth it. The property is very spacious (with extremely beautiful landscaping) and even connects to a private sandy beach that is a great launching spot for paddleboarding.
The location of Villa Pelicanos is also fantastic. It is nestled up in the secluded hills but is only a short (~15 min) walk from town and surf.
The cooking staff was extremely flexible and accommodated our every request. On top of all of that the food was restaurant quality! Delicious meals 3x/day =)
Villa Pelicanos will make your Sayulita vacation unforgettable! Would definitely come back again!
Perfect Sayuilta Paradise
"From the gorgeous grounds and ocean views, to the wonderful staff, Villa Pelicanos is THE PERFECT Sayulita property for my fitness & wellness retreats! I cannot wait to return."
5-Star Vacation Experience
Villa Pelicanos is the perfect beach vacation house! The staff did everything to accommodate us -- from grocery shopping to scheduling transportation, activities, and an onsite chef. Most of our meal were cooked onsite by a chef --- they were fresh, local, and absolutely delicious. We actually added additional meals as it was much better, and easier, than eating out! The individual casitas offered privacy, while the main house and beautiful infinity pool allowed us to be together when we wanted. While the pictures of Villa Pelicanos are beautiful, we were absolutely blown away when we saw it.
Our group of 13 individuals, who travel together annually, decided this was hands down our favorite vacation. We'll be coming back again next year!
Thank you! we loved having you!
