About RICHARD AND BEVERLY LAHR

An island resident for over 25 years and now retired to the South West Florida coast. We arrived when the island was only 50 folks and

the island was just being discovered. No golf courses and no paved roads - November 1984.

After years of operating the only cabinet/woodworking shop on the island the times of loading into the boat to go to the mainland grew old. Now days the boat ride is to venture into the blue waters of the Florida Gulf coast into the fertile fishing grounds and enjoy the white sand beaches along with the warmth of the sun.

RICHARD AND BEVERLY LAHR purchased this cottage in 1986

Why RICHARD AND BEVERLY LAHR chose Hilton Head

Opportunity knocked as sailing by on the Nimble coming back from St. Simon to Hilton Head. Walking for hours it put be back to the past roads of northern Vermont where I came from.

Never leaving and quitting my job on the mainland I was a transplant. The Sign over at the Freeport Marina ( Cooper River Landing was my exchange for a couple months dockage to get settled in.

PLEASE NOTE: This rental property will be FOR SALE as of 2-11-2016. In the past 9 Months it has brought in well over $25,000 on VRBO. 2 structures, one long term @ $950 per month and one short term VRBO vacation rental. Excellent Investment at $275K. Inquire to owner for details.

Happy is good for the Soul

  • 5 of 5

Happy is exactly what we were the whole 6 days we spent in Daufuskie. The 1926 Cottage was perfect for me and my daughter. We had the BEST vacation ever. The cottage is quaint and quiet. Everything works well and every thing you need is included with this rental. The golf cart worked perfectly for us. We drove it all day, every day and it never lost a charge. We did not drive it after dark, so I don't know if that makes that much of a difference. The beaches are beautiful and the house has really nice beach chairs and fishing pools for guests use. The locals who live on the Island are some of the nicest people I have ever met. If you get the chance to attend Church on Sunday I highly recommend it. It was very different from my upbringing. Members of the Church get up and sing or play guitar and share whatever God given talent they have. My 11 year old daughter even spent part of the week going to VBS! She was Immediately accepted and made many new friends with the local children. We are not a religious family per say. But the feeling of acceptance and community here is hard to ignore. Make sure to make time to eat at Lucy Bell's and Marshside Mama's. Both are just right around the corner. I also highly recommend the Daufuskie Island Ferry and Daufuskie Island Transit. We've only been home 1 week and I am already trying to plan another trip back. Do yourself a favor and book a stay here. The owners of this property are wonderful and easy to work with. You can see the love that they have put into this rental. Thank you all for a wonderful stay. We will be returning again soon,

Quaint cottage in the middle of a big woods. Not the Hilton but a simple, clean, comfortable home.

  • 5 of 5

Directions to the property: take the dirt road south, turn left after the 509th tree covered with Spanish moss onto a dirt road. Keep taking dirt roads until you get to a dirt road with a group of two houses and a tiny cottage that feels like history. Be prepared to sleep a lot because this island is a relaxing oasis that hasn't yet entered the nonsense of today.

The cottage is old. Don't expect perfection. Rooms are small, kitchen is old fashioned, and you might see a spider or two. But the house is clean, well-cared for and private. Only real surprise is that the washer/dryer is actually across the road in another house. It is a bit inconvenient especially after dark to traipse across to someone else's house to tend your laundry. But the cottage is old and small so I get why the modern conveniences are difficult to install. It was just unexpected but not a real problem.

If you plan to cook a lot, you might want to bring a skillet or two/. The kitchen is well-stocked but this is a rental so the pans are abused by people who evidently don't know how to treat cookware. I think they stir their food with garden hoes.

The Property owners were responsive and helpful/. They seemed genuinely interested in ensuring a great experience. Definitely good hosts.

My favorite part of the place was the golf cart. I loved puttering around this lovely island in my little yellow cart. Lots of fun exploring the island and less than ten minutes to the beach. I often stay in nice resorts right on the beach but have a long hike to the beach with all the stuff youv carry. This cart gets you right up to the sand and eliminates that hike.

I thoroughly enjoyed this vacation and will definitely be returning to Daufuskie and the Gullah cottage if I can.

Amazing Escape

  • 5 of 5

If you want the true Daufuskie experience this is the house for you. The golf cart that comes with the house is a huge plus! I've been staying at this property for years with my family and can't imagine staying anywhere else. Thank you to the Lahr Family for sharing this gem with us. Everytime we visit it's like coming home!

Awesome cottage! We definitely recommend!!!

  • 5 of 5

We had an awesome time staying in this cottage! We were so blessed to be able to stay here and enjoy the island. We kept ourselves busy by exploring the island, having fun at the beach, eating at our favorite restaurants (Marshside Mamas and Lucy Bells), buying souvenirs, and much more! A perk about this cottage is that it allows pets so we were able to make memories with our puppies. Also, the golf cart that comes with the cottage was a huge plus! The island rents them but they are very expensive. (A golf cart is a must-have on the island). If I had to give any advice, it would be to bring some food and water with you. The restaurants are open at limited times and sometimes require reservations. Otherwise, we made so many memories and definitely look forward to going back.
