|Minimum Stay||7 nights|
Strand Island is a private 42 acre island located on 11,000 acre Pelican Lake in Orr, Minnesota... 3 hours and 40 minutes from Minneapolis. The 108 year old fully remodeled main cabin has 8 bedrooms- each bedroom has it's own antique sink. There are 1.50 baths, a totally remodeled kitchen with two refrigerators and two freezers, a stone fireplace, a sunroom and a huge screened porch with card tables and 4 swinging beds suspended from the ceiling… There is also a sauna house with a shower, a washer and dryer and a 75 year old log cabin that sleeps four and has a card table.
There are two other out buildings... one is a game room with a air hockey table and the other is a TV cabin or movie house with a large screen TV... we do not have cable TV, but we have an Apple TV loaded with tons of movies for rainy days!
The island is 42 totally private acres, undeveloped and wild- explore the woods or cast a line off the dock. This is the only home on the island!! The 11,000 acre Pelican Lake is excellent for crappie and bass fishing, boating or water sports.
Need a boat? We can rent you our pontoon for $500 a week- it is not fancy, but it gets the job done! It is 21 foot pontoon with a 35 horse motor & our caretaker will meet you at the dock with the pontoon to give you tips on operation.... or you can bring your own boats to fish or ski. There are 5 large parking spots on the mainland at Deer Lodge and a dock to easily load up the boat when you arrive Strand Island is about a 10 minute boat ride from the dock at Deer Lodge... or about 1 mile from mainland. The island will be all yours to roam, fish, play or pick raspberries in total seclusion.
Kayak around the 9500 feet of shoreline or out to the nearby state park on Big Island- a 210 acre nearby island owned by the State of Mn. You have the entire island to yourself- no other cabins on the island- play, explore, hike or fish one of several private bays.
There are two kayaks there for your use and a flat bottom metal row boat.
There is large grass field as well... to play wiffle ball or football for the kids.

We saw the aerial shot of Strand Island and were amazed enough to go take a look- the idea of a 42 private island I think appeals to anyone- it is wild, private and the home has the unique character of a 100 + year old lodge... we fell in love with it.
alone on a private island- lots of benefits!!
Last year was our first time at Strand Island and within 30 min being on the island we decided to come back. we come with a pretty good mix of people adults and kids, all ages, and there was something for everyone. we had bonfires, fishing, boating , swimming and exploring the lake. My favorite past time was reading all the entries in the guest book. it was really interesting reading what everyone had said about their stay there, going back to the early 1900's. it was a great location and easy to get to. I highly recommend staying on Strand Island.
We had a group of 22 people (ages 22 to 82) and 4 dogs spend a long weekend in September. We had 4 people camping but felt there was plenty of room, especially if some are flexible about using an outhouse. We cooked every night - there is plenty of fridge/freezer/pantry room. The property is perfect for backwoods hiking, swimming, camping, kayaking, fishing, and boating. The caretakers are great and easily accessible by phone. The cabin itself is beautiful and impressive. The wrap-around porch is a great place to take in the view, even in poor weather. The view is truly incredible. We hope to visit again.
We recently rented this property the first week in Oct for a family getaway (7 adults, 2 kids). As soon as we arrived, we were blown away by the beauty of the lake and then the property itself. The main house is decorated so beautifully and has everything you could need. There was plenty of space to have everyone spread out. We were initially worried about only having two bathrooms for a large group of people but having sinks in each room was perfect. It was never a problem. All of the additional out buildings are a lot of fun and add to the uniqueness of the property. I recommend utilizing the kayaks and taking a trip around the island. Overall it was a wonderful stay with zero stress. I'd recommend it to anyone who is looking for a special place to get away from it all.
We absolutely loved Strand Island! Our 4 families have traveled annually for the past 10 years and have never found a place we all wanted to return to until now! To start off, it was great having Jay, the caretaker. We've never rented a property where anyone showed us around and shared the history of the place. Second, the house is wonderful. There was plenty of room for all of us. It was very helpful to have sinks in all the bedrooms with having the house able to accommodate so many. The beds on the porch got good use too! We found out the current owners did a lot of work on the place and it showed. They put their special touch on the place that we haven't seen at other properties. They supplied plenty of towels, sheets and blankets, which was nice on the cold nights and when the kids wanted to sleep in the Apple TV cabin. The kids enjoyed making up games on the island, swimming and playing in the "workshop" game room. It was a great place for kids to get away from electronics and play in nature. The fishing was great and the view was incredible. We even got to take a few kayak trips around the island and met a Mallard duck family. Thank you for sharing this beautiful place with us!
I had the recent pleasure of vacationing on Strand Island with my children and extended family. I would highly recommend the experience as the perfect summer getaway. The century old house we lodged in was clean and spacious and invoked happy memories of vacations of yesteryear- rustic rooms, board games, books, campfires, fishing, kayaking, idle conversation and lazy days of unscheduled freedom. The setting contained everything we needed- a pontoon for leisurely cruises, kayaks, row boat, small sandy beach, large “backyard” for lawn games as well as a forested untamed island ripe for ambitious explorers. We feasted like kings! The kitchen was amply stocked and gas and charcoal grills were conveniently available. We all enjoyed the sauna/shower provided in one of the compound’s cabins. I can’t imagine a better place to reconnect with family and escape the frantic pace of everyday life.
