Not your average vacation
In all honesty, I began to rethink this trip shortly before we were scheduled to leave. I thought that the week would begin to drag at some point. I couldn't have been more wrong. I enjoyed myself every day, and I slept better than I have slept in months. Each day we found something new, whether it was a new path to a previously discovered destination or a new little spot that we hadn't had the opportunity to explore yet. I was skeptical about the solar energy and the well water, but again my skepticism was unwarranted - we had no issues with either. We brought a kayak and a paddle board with us. There were a couple of times when the water was a little rough for me (I tend to be overly cautious and am not the most experienced paddler) but not often. Paddling around the island and over to the smaller island added a whole new dimension to the experience. Mosquitoes were a little more aggressive than I had expected based on previous reviews, so I would recommend making sure you have options when it comes to bug spray, but other than that the week was pretty close to perfect.
Our trip was absolutely amazing. So much fun to be had with our dog outside. Leaving NYC for a week at the cabin was a great decision, with the owner and captain making the trip a seamless and enjoyable experience from start to finish.
We loved our week on this amazing island!
My husband and I and our 10 year old twins enjoyed exploring, discovering, and relaxing, and our only sadness was that it didn't last longer! As other reviewers have commented, the house is wonderfully spacious and easy to relax in, with comfy couches for reading and movie watching, the kitchen well stocked with everything we needed, the bedrooms/bathrooms perfect for our needs, with extra blankets for the cooler nights. We especially loved having two tables- we used the kitchen for dining (or at outside on the picnic table) and then the longer table in the "dining room" was fabulous for puzzling and games. We were truly never bored- there was only the delight of the rare quiet where you get to choose what to do next, and there were always so many wonderful options to consider. Exploring the slightly under a mile long perimeter trail was a treat, as was traipsing along less developed trails. We found ourselves "looking" in all directions- down at the mossy rocks, tide pools, ferns, out at the sea, marveling at the different blues and the way the horizon disappeared in mist one day, and up, up up at the stars- one night we realized we were looking at Mars, Jupiter and Saturn!!! The sounds were amazing too: from the gentle hum of lobster boats on weekday mornings, to falling asleep to the sounds of waves crashing on the rocks, and even the silence of everyone lost in books, or the glee of kids shrieking as the scrambled on the rocks, we just found ourselves appreciating all the new & wonder of each and every day.
On the practical side, both Captain Jamie and Steve were incredibly helpful, supportive and responsive, and we felt thankful that not only were our needs met but any questions were quickly answered and attended to! We found that packing in plastic bins and duffel bags made for super easy loading and unloading, and laughed as we realized we had more board games and books than clothes/food. :) We agree that water shoes are a must, as are shoes for scrambling on rocks, or running down full speed to the dock to catch the sunset. Connectivity was just fine to the extent we needed it, but I am glad to say that we were largely unplugged which only added to the experience. We recommend this island wholeheartedly to anyone looking for a chance to just slow the pace down and enjoy a week of marveling at the world and people you love; you will undoubtedly be happier for it!
a very special place
a perfect place to completely unwind, to leave the world behind. Not a place for somebody who has to be on the move, but a great and beautiful setting to just relax . Cobblestone beaches, cliffs, lovely peaceful woods; fishing for mackerel, canoeing, bonfire on the beach, reading, napping, etc
We loved it! Beautiful place......beautiful memories!
This was our first visit to Maine and it was amazing! We are a family of five with kids ages 12, 16, 18 and our dog. We wanted something special to celebrate our oldest daughter’s graduation and to spend time together before she leaves for college. What can I say- it was all we dreamed of and more! We enjoyed exploring the island trails, canoeing, skimming the shallow pools of water for critters on the land bridge between the islands, playing games in the house, watching movies with the surround sound in the evenings, and watching beautiful sunsets from the dock. The stars are spectacular at night as well! The week was a great mix of adventure and relaxation- exactly what we needed! One might say it was magical! Thanks again Steve for sharing your paradise!
You cannot possibly get bored here as a family with children !!
"Mom, there is so much more to do here than when we are home" quote of my 13 year old son.
If you are thinking of booking a stay here and have hesitate because you are nervous about how in the world you will fill the days with your young children, let me assauge your fears....we came as a family with 8 children between the ages of 15-5, several with significant special needs. All of our kids are were busy from the moment they woke up until the moment they went to sleep. From climbing the rocks, exploring the tide pools, collecting firewood, crabbing, hiking, fishing, meals on the back porch, family games of uno and various board&card games, nightly campfires with flashlight games like spotlight, firefly, and flashlight tag our days were overflowing with stuff to do and the week literally flew by in the blink of the eye.
The owner was very easy to work with, always responsive, and gracious when working out allowing us to resolve a damage issue (one of our kids damaged his stove).
I cannot recommend this property more--- the pictures simply cannot do it justice. The living areas are so spacious and conducive to multiple gathering areas, and the island itself is perfect for family hikes and explorations. The tidal pools by the small island are some of the best we have ever seen. Our children were able to swim during low tide and heading towards high tide, when the sun had time to warm the water. Water shoes are a must for exploring the water here, as are windbreakers/rain coats.
You will not regret a stay here, I guarantee it!
