About the property

Two private islands off the Maine coast an hour north of Acadia Nat'l Park

Two private islands for you to enjoy during your rental! Walk the rocky beaches. Hike along the trails that circumnavigate each island. Sit on the rocks and look at the ocean. Have a picnic. Sip some wine. Read. Think. Sleep. Meditate. Create. Dream. Just be.

Located about an hour and half by car from the airport in Bangor, Maine, Lower Birch Island is a world away from the hustle and bustle of modern life. Lower Birch Island(s) are located at the mouth of Pleasant Bay facing the open ocean. The 23.6 acre larger island has an 1,800 sq. ft. house with 3 bedrooms and 1 and 1/2 baths. One bedroom has a king bed, one has a queen bed, and the third has twin beds. There is a queen sleep sofa in the living room. The house was totally refurnished in the fall of 2013 and includes a new refrigerator and gas stove. The house is fully equipped and has a fireplace, woodstove, and a new LP gas heater, if needed. Electricity is provided by off grid solar power, which has a backup gas generator. Water is provided by a drilled well.

The smaller 4.4 acre island is accessible by a land bridge that appears at low tide. You can walk across the land bridge for about four hours each tide cycle, so you have plenty of time to explore the undeveloped small island and still return to the big island before the tide rolls back in.

The islands are a truly unique experience. Many people dream about staying on a private island. If you are one of them, this is your chance! One of the many attractions of Maine is that it combines the beauty of the forest with the majesty of the coast. The islands embody both. I make it a point to hike the trail around the big island each morning and each evening, often stopping to look at the ocean, scramble on the rocks, or explore the island's interior.

The islands are a chance to finally get away. I live in the Washington, DC area, surrounded by crowds and traffic. The islands provide me with a necessary respite to get some peace and solitude, to rest and recharge. If you have a harried, busy, "normal" life, they might be just the break you need.

Dogs are welcome! I never go to the islands without my two. Dogs can run free 24/7. Seeing my dogs' unbridled joy as they bound off the boat when we arrive is a sight to behold. They often come back wet during the day, which means they are taking the opportunity to go for a swim!

This is an incredible spot for kayaking. There are multiple accessible out islands to explore from Lower Birch (including uninhabited Upper Birch, just north), as well as the opportunity to cruise up both necks on either side of the bay, or around the points and along the coast. I don't provide kayaks, but Captain James Robertson (see next paragraph) can get yours on his boat.

Boat travel from Milbridge, Maine to the island on the day or your arrival and back to Milbridge on the day of your departure is included in the rental price. You can leave your car in Milbridge. Captain James Robertson, or one of his other captains, will take you on the scenic, 25 minute ride along the beautiful, rugged Maine coast to the island. The boat ride alone is an experience not to be missed. Have your camera or cell phone ready to take photos! Upon arrival at the island, Captain Robertson will help you get your luggage and food to the house, orient you to the property, and then leave you to enjoy the peace and solitude. He can provide you with fresh (and I mean fresh, literally right out of the ocean) lobsters at any time during your stay at an additional charge.

During the summer, Captain Robertson spends all of his days on the water operating boat tours. He offers whale watching and puffin watching tours as well as custom tours. Check with him for details and costs. Additionally, he can take you back to the mainland whenever you wish, at an additional charge, if you want to resupply or spend the day exploring the area.

Acadia National Park is about an hour drive south from Milbridge. If you have the resources, and depending upon his schedule, Captain Robertson can take you on a custom, all day cruise from Lower Birch down to Acadia. This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience and provides a perspective of Acadia that most people never see. If interested, contact him directly.

Captain Robertson serves as the onsite rental manager and emergency contact during your visit. The caretaker, who was the builder of the house, serves as his back up. Both are local, life long residents and live nearby. I am available by cell phone any time.

You cannot possibly get bored here as a family with children !!

  • 5 of 5

"Mom, there is so much more to do here than when we are home" quote of my 13 year old son.

If you are thinking of booking a stay here and have hesitate because you are nervous about how in the world you will fill the days with your young children, let me assauge your fears....we came as a family with 8 children between the ages of 15-5, several with significant special needs. All of our kids are were busy from the moment they woke up until the moment they went to sleep. From climbing the rocks, exploring the tide pools, collecting firewood, crabbing, hiking, fishing, meals on the back porch, family games of uno and various board&card games, nightly campfires with flashlight games like spotlight, firefly, and flashlight tag our days were overflowing with stuff to do and the week literally flew by in the blink of the eye.

The owner was very easy to work with, always responsive, and gracious when working out allowing us to resolve a damage issue (one of our kids damaged his stove).

I cannot recommend this property more--- the pictures simply cannot do it justice. The living areas are so spacious and conducive to multiple gathering areas, and the island itself is perfect for family hikes and explorations. The tidal pools by the small island are some of the best we have ever seen. Our children were able to swim during low tide and heading towards high tide, when the sun had time to warm the water. Water shoes are a must for exploring the water here, as are windbreakers/rain coats.

You will not regret a stay here, I guarantee it!

Simply awesome!

  • 5 of 5

We humans give this private island five (5) stars. Our two dogs give it 10 stars! We had a blast. The house, island, trails, views and weather were perfect and Captain Jamie Robertson was a great help with our baggage. To paraphrase General Douglas MacArthur, "We shall return."

One-Of-A-Kind Experience!

  • 5 of 5

We were a little nervous about renting our own private island for the first time- it seemed good in theory but I was worried we'd get out there with the kids and the dog only to realize we'd left something vitally important back on the mainland. Now that we're back, we all agree that this vacation ended up being one of the most special and relaxing trips we've ever taken as a family.

The house is absolutely beautiful, the photos don't really show it off, it was very clean and there's a lot of detail in the wood and stonework. We were surprised by the vaulted ceilings in the upstairs bedrooms which make the space feel very light and airy, not dark and cabiny. We spent a lot of time on the deck reading or just staring out at the ocean listening to the surf. It was very serene and peaceful. Only change we would make is bringing less stuff next time, and there being more comfortable outdoor seating.

The kids loved using the telescope at night to do some star watching. They also were game for exploring the island's many trails. Their favorite was the one from the side of the house through the old vegetable(?) garden (opposite direction from the little island, not sure what cardinal direction that is), and down the hill to a little sandy beach and the big boulders by the water. It was a good place to dig, or look for cool rocks or buoys that have washed up, and there were a lot of seabirds. Also the land bridge between the two islands when the tide was out was incredible! There were tidepools and little crabs, along with big boulders to climb on and a large sandy area. I'm not sure whether the kids or our dog had more fun. We went wading for a little bit but the water was too cold to do much else.

The owner was very good at responding quickly to questions about the property. We liked Captain Jamie when we met him, but LOVED him after he helped get all our stuff up the house from the dock. He mentioned that he does tours of other islands or the local wildlife and we might take him up on that next time.

We're definitely planning on coming back next year and hoping to get more family members to join us!
