About Gary Allen

I'm a retired police officer and my wife is a teacher. We have two children and two grandchildren.

We both grew up in California and have lived in Venice Beach for over 30 years.

Our interests include travel, art, remodeling properties and our kids and grandkids.

Gary Allen purchased this apartment in 1989

Why Gary Allen chose Venice

We have lived and raised our children in this unique beach community. When we moved here from greater Los Angeles 32 years ago, we knew we would stay. We had found our home. There is no more unique beach city in California than Venice. It is both eclectic and chic. It has casual eateries and '5 star' restaurants. It has street artists and posh galleries. It is the home of movie stars, musicians, surfers, artists, families, and lots of dogs. Our nickname is 'Dogtown'.

The walk street community is special because of its proximity to everything related to the beach cities yet the walk streets provide a private, green, tranquil setting.

First there is no street traffic. There are only alleyways for owners to access parking and sidewalks in the front of the homes for leisurely walks and quiet ambiance.

Next, Venice Beach, Abbot Kinney Boulevard, Marina Del Rey, and Santa Monica are all within walking distance or a short bike ride away.

We have a parking place for guests but it's so easy to get around that many people don't bother renting a car. Plus there are car services like 'Uber' and 'Ride' which can be utilized instead of taxis.

What makes this apartment unique

Our property is unique because it has a rare private stand alone loft. The homes on the walkstreets are usually single family. A few homes have guest houses on the ground floor, but our modern loft sits alone above the garage. We call it the 'treehouse' because of the sense of floating above the ground.

Wonderful getaway in Venice

  • 5 of 5

This loft apartment is the perfect place to stay in Venice! It is spacious, clean, and comfortable. We stayed here 5 nights to celebrate our anniversary in LA. The place is well-stocked and the selection of snacks, wine, and water bottles was much appreciated! The apartment had all the basic necessities needed for a comfortable stay. The home itself is in a great location - a quick walk to Abbot Kinney and all of the nearby restaurants and shops. The beach is also close - the two bikes included with the rental were PERFECT! We got to see so much and really enjoyed being able to bike all over Venice and Santa Monica. The apartment is in a quiet residential area, so you feel secluded and not so touristy - walking around the streets and admiring the beautiful homes and gardens is a plus. We used Uber and Lyft to get to other parts of the city, and it was super easy. Gary and Toni were very friendly but not intrusive - always there to help and say hi! What a lovely home! The dogs on the property were super cute, and we never had to leave or arrive without getting sweet puppy greetings from Louis. He is the cutest. Overall, we couldn't have asked for anything else. We would definitely stay here again!

Very clean and great location with great hosts.

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed for a week and absolutely loved the property. It is centrally located and just a short Uber ride away from everything. From the popular Venice beach and boardwalk, Santa Monica Pier, Marina Delray, to the less crowded beaches on the "ABC" streets which we enjoyed the most. We did our grocery shopping at Ralphs so we did not have to eat out every night, but the property is only about a 3 minute walk from iconic Abbot Kinney Blvd which has most any kind of dining you could want. Our hosts Gary and Toni were the best. Always out of sight but always handy when we had any questions. The only problem we had was my wife fell in love with one of their dogs "King Louis" and I had to convince her we could not pack him in our suitcase to take home. :) Overall one of our best experiences and would definitely stay here again. Thanks again Gary and Toni.

Spacious and everything you need

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our 5 day stay. It's quite spacious, more than the pictures describe. The kitchen has the basic salt/pepper, oil, tea etc. types of condiments. The basket of goodies and wine were appreciated especially after our long travel day. We walked to Costco and organic grocery store so that we could make breakfast in the mornings, and ate in the sun on the deck. Otherwise there are some great restaurants on Abbot Kinney, which is a short walk away. The cruisers were perfect on the Santa Monica/Venice boardwalk. Only thing that could be added is a little BBQ on the deck. My husband is taller and would've preferred some privacy on the windows in the shower & living room. It's a nice safe neighbourhood. Definitely recommend and would stay there again.

Lovely, clean beach loft

  • 5 of 5

The beach loft is just as pictured and advertised - clean, bright, well-equipped and a very pleasant place to come "home" to at the end of full days. The décor is modern and minimalist and the location is close to so many things to see and easily accessible to places not as close. We really enjoyed our time at the loft - rain and all - and Toni can be relied upon for great restaurant suggestions!

Our loft apartment is located just a short walk to the famous Venice Beach and Abbot Kinney Boulevard.

At Venice Beach, visitors can shop, swim, dine, workout, bike, surf, para-glide, or just watch the various street performers.

Abbot Kinney Boulevard bustles with activity. Abbot Kinney has 5 star restaurants including the local favorite, Gjelina. There are art galleries, antique shops, treat shops, clothing stores, home stores, bars, juice bars and restaurants. The first Friday of every month the stores stay open late and Abbot Kinney Boulevard becomes a kind of outdoor party scene with some 30 gourmet food trucks, live music and people watching galore.

Be sure to visit our open air fresh produce market every Friday morning just a 0.4 mile walk toward the ocean on Venice Boulevard. 100+ vendors from as far north as Santa Maria (central California) bring their farm fresh organic products to the parking lot just west of the library from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Get a fresh pastry and coffee, juice, or tea while you peruse the fresh goodness.
