Freret Street is located Uptown and is dubbed the Freret Arts and Entertainment District. It is an area that is experiencing revitalization to bring it back to its former glory. The Freret Corridor is just 8 blocks long but can claim great restaurants, cafes, a bakery, unique bar and other local flavors. Every April, the Freret Street Festival blocks the street for food trucks, musicians and over 200 vendors. The first Saturday of each month, at the corner of Napoleon and Freret is the Freret Street Market. The market is divided into food, art and flea, and is a great place to explore, eat and enjoy the music. Eat too much? Stop in at Anytime Fitness, open 24/7. Explore BrottWork Design Studio to see custom art glass or Freret Clay Center nearby. From the apartment it is just 8 blocks to St. Charles Ave. which is a major parade route during Mardi Gras. The St. Charles streetcar takes you to downtown, the Convention Center, Harrah's Casino and the French Quarters. It's 2.5 miles from the Super Dome and just a 15 walk to Tulane and Loyola Universities. For Jazz Fest, the Fairgrounds are just 5.17 miles away by car. Or, take the street car to Audubon Park and catch the shuttle. Oschner/Baptist Hospital is a few blocks away.
A manager lives in one of the lower units and is available as needed. This is a quiet building.
The bus stop is at the corner. It is a 20-30 min. drive from the airport depending on traffic.
Currently only two of the apartments are rented. Guests are expected to respect the privacy and quiet atmosphere of the building. Party responsibly. No pets allowed. Smoking on the front porch ONLY with open windows.
Years ago I made a promise to a friend. I told her I would come out of retirement and help her if she became a principal. Guess what? She I did! In June 2014, I completed my 40th year of teaching (OMG). I now serve as the Computer Coordinator for grades 2nd - 5th grade students.
I was born and raised in New Orleans. Graduated from St. Mary's Academy when it was in the French Quarters (long, long time ago). Moved to Los Angeles, CA to attend college and now live in the Bay Area. But, I still call NOLA home and come every 2 - 3 months. My husband and I love to travel. We have sailed most of the caribbean islands with friends, traveled Europe, South America and Africa. Paris is my most favored city. Since we travel with friends, we always rent apartments and prefer that to staying in hotels. I have tried to incorporate all of the good things I like about traveling and staying in homes to the space I have created for you because I want my guests to be comfortable, feel cared about and satisfied when you leave my special get-away home.
I am an avid reader with a library of over 700 books, most of them hardbacks. I have placed a number of them on the bookcase for my guests to enjoy. In my spare time I crochet, make jewelry, garden and feed a host of friends. I am in the process of creating a vegetable/herb garden in the back yard for the continued good health of all. Guests will be able to pick whatever is growing in the garden at the time.
I love the theater and see a minimum of 3 shows per year, including a few operas. There is also a collection of music and movies for guests to enjoy.
My Life's Motto: I believe that no matter what, things are in divine order in the universe. There is no greater power than Love and appreciation. I give thanks for all blessings - those I have received in the past - those I have now, in the present - and those I will have in the future. Thank you for considering and/or booking. Ma maison est votre maison.
Elaine Armour-Word purchased this apartment in 2009
After Katrina the New Orleans Redevelopment Agency (NORA) set about restoring sections of the city to its previous glory. Freret Street is now being redeveloped with new streets and new businesses. It is the new up-and-coming 'hip' area of N.O. and in a few years will rival popular Oak Street. It is walking distance to St. Charles Ave and the streetcar line as well as Tulane and Loyola Universities. The streetcar line will take you through a scenic route directly to downtown, the French Quarters, and Harrah's Casino. It's also a short distance to the Super Dome.
This is in the perfect location for those who want to be in New Orleans without being in the middle of the tourist melee. Just off Freret, this neighborhood is revitalized with plenty of restaurants and bars within a few blocks. It is a short walk to the street car if you want to go downtown or to the universities and Audubon Park. The space itself if surprisingly big for a weekend rental. Three bedrooms and two baths. Nicely furnished. Great to grab a drink in a go cup from the bar around the corner and sit on the steps, watching life go by. Nice backyard seating as well.
We had a small hiccup with getting the key, and Elaine got it taken care of right away. Just what an owner should be.
As we opened the door, we were amazed at the decor, space, cleanliness, etc! It was a joy to be in a home away from home.
The site mgr was very friendly and helpful with suggestions. It was very appreciative to have extra assistance if needed. She welcomed a phone call if she needed.
Thanks for a well written notebook of information of policies to follow and ideas of restaurants and sights to see.
Everyone was pleased!
This is a gem-the property was perfect for our long graduation weekend - 4 adults but could have comfortably fit more. It is clean and quiet and convenient to getting around. Elaine was helpful with any questions or concerns we had prior to our arrival and accomodated our requests (early arrival, parking for rental car). We would definitely stay here again, thanks!
We were in New Orleans for a graduation and stayed in the 3 bdroom apartment with 8 people (including kids) It wasn't crowded AT All! And was amazing. Close to food and entertainment and a short drive to the French Quarter and attractions. Our biggest regret? We didn't have another week to stay. Elaine was amazing the entire time including allowing us to add an additional day to our stay. I highly recommend this amazing unit! Check it out and head down to the hotdog stand and get a drink and a yummy treat!!
We had a great experience at this house! It was extremely spacious and located next to some excellent places to grab a bite to eat. It was also simple to get to other parts of town as the house is near a major thoroughfare. Overall a great place to stay.
We had a good stay to the house. The location was great. It was an easy walk to the trolley and there are many great restaurants very close by. It is an older house that has its quirks, but was clean and suited our needs. The rooms were big enough, the water pressure was good. Only thing we would recommend is new mattresses.
Apt. is walking distance to a small park and to Audubon Park and Audubon Zoo. It is also a short walk to Loyola/Tulane Universities. The Super Dome is about 3 miles away. Catch the St. Charles streetcar to get to downtown, the French Quarters and Harrah's Casino.
