Every April, the Freret Street Festival blocks the street for food trucks, musicians and over 200 vendors. The first Saturday of each month, at the corner of Napoleon and Freret is the Freret Street Market. The market is divided into food, art and flea, and is a great place to explore, eat and enjoy the music. Eat too much? Stop in at Anytime Fitness, open 24/7. About Elaine Armour-Word

Years ago I made a promise to a friend. I told her I would come out of retirement and help her if she became a principal. Guess what? She I did! In June 2014, I completed my 40th year of teaching (OMG). I now serve as the Computer Coordinator for grades 2nd - 5th grade students.

I was born and raised in New Orleans. Graduated from St. Mary's Academy when it was in the French Quarters (long, long time ago). Moved to Los Angeles, CA to attend college and now live in the Bay Area. But, I still call NOLA home and come every 2 - 3 months. My husband and I love to travel. We have sailed most of the caribbean islands with friends, traveled Europe, South America and Africa. Paris is my most favored city. Since we travel with friends, we always rent apartments and prefer that to staying in hotels. I have tried to incorporate all of the good things I like about traveling and staying in homes to the space I have created for you because I want my guests to be comfortable, feel cared about and satisfied when you leave my special get-away home.

I am an avid reader with a library of over 700 books, most of them hardbacks. I have placed a number of them on the bookcase for my guests to enjoy. In my spare time I crochet, make jewelry, garden and feed a host of friends. I am in the process of creating a vegetable/herb garden in the back yard for the continued good health of all. Guests will be able to pick whatever is growing in the garden at the time.

I love the theater and see a minimum of 3 shows per year, including a few operas. There is also a collection of music and movies for guests to enjoy.

My Life's Motto: I believe that no matter what, things are in divine order in the universe. There is no greater power than Love and appreciation. I give thanks for all blessings - those I have received in the past - those I have now, in the present - and those I will have in the future. Thank you for considering and/or booking. Ma maison est votre maison.

Why Elaine Armour-Word chose Uptown

After Katrina the New Orleans Redevelopment Agency (NORA) set about restoring sections of the city to its previous glory. Freret Street is now being redeveloped with new streets and new businesses. It is the new up-and-coming 'hip' area of N.O. and in a few years will rival popular Oak Street. It is walking distance to St. Charles Ave and the streetcar line as well as Tulane and Loyola Universities. The streetcar line will take you through a scenic route directly to downtown, the French Quarters, and Harrah's Casino. It's also a short distance to the Super Dome.

Very comfortable and convenient

  • 5 of 5

We were five adults staying over Christmas. The apartment was very clean and comfortable. We all slept well on the beds. It was a relatively short walk to St. Charles where we we could catch the trolley. We had dinner out every night and Uber took us to the restaurant and back. I would definitely recommend this rental.

Terrific Stay!

  • 5 of 5

This apartment is in a great little part of town. The trip to Bourbon Street and the French Quarter is an easy walk and streetcar ride away (and Uber rides are easy), but after a day sightseeing and exploring, it was so nice to have the option to just walk a block or two to the neighborhood restaurants as well. There were several great options. The apartment itself is roomy and cute. We were so comfortable. The owner's communication was informative and complete. I would recommend this property enthusiastically!

Clean home, great neighbourhood, easy to get anywhere

  • 5 of 5

Elaine was right, the neighbourhood is great!! Beautiful area to walk around, magazine street is just a 15 minute walk away and it is an easy 10 minute walk to St Charles trolley. The house is great, very clean, fits 6 adults comfortably, nice back yard, and great front steps to sit and have a coffee and meet the neighbours! We had a blast and hope to be back next year!

Great Stay for Mardi Gras!

  • 5 of 5

I booked the apartment for a bachelorette party during Mardi Gras. Elaine was really easy to work with - very responsive and accommodating. She has one of the other tenants of the apartment watch over the property and stay on call if you need anything. The apartment was very cute and felt really safe. Everyone kept saying it was "so perfect" in every way.

We were worried about there only being 2 bathrooms for 8 people. This did not end up being a problem at all. We never ran out of hot water, and two of the rooms have large dressers with mirrors that we used to get ready.

The location is in a great spot - walking distance to a really popular bagel shop, gourmet hot dog place, cake shop, and other cute restaurants and shops. Just a quick uber ride to the French Quarter and the Garden District, although those were really expensive during Mardi Gras. It is close enough to the "action" of New Orleans, but far enough away were we could have peace and quiet when we wanted.

The property is pretty old, but well maintained. The back door and freezer randomly open at times. Since it is NOLA, I thought it would be fun to attribute that to a ghost, but we all knew it was just a quirk from the house being old and the floors being uneven :)

I would definitely stay here again and recommend to others!

Owner's Response: Christina, thank you for staying. Actually, there are ghosts :) (Just kidding!) but this is a first for the freeser and back door, so I can't explain it either. Please do come stay again. We are always making improvements with a new kitchen planned in the next year. Elaine

Fun Times in NOLA

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 7 adults and 1 child were visiting NOLA for the weekend before leaving on cruise. We were very pleased with the unit. The beds were comfortable and we made use of the washer/dryer. We did notice a slight slant in the flooring (which is very typical of the shotgun style homes in New Orleans) but it was no bother to us. We liked having the lock box on the door so we did not have to carry and keep up with a key to the unit. The location was convenient with coffee shops and cafes within walking distance. We never felt unsafe in the area. We had dinner at the HIGH HAT CAFE and enjoyed the catfish and shrimp po boys. We did not have a car but made use of the street cars (we walked to St. Charles) and public buses (which had a stop about 3 blocks from the unit). The apartment was clean and everything was just as pictured. Our arrival time was later than expected so we contacted Doris to let her know. We never met her in person but she was very pleasant on the phone and let us know that she was available if needed. Elaine was very easy to work with and answered all my questions in a timely manner. I would recommend this rental!

Trying to be something it isn't

  • 1 of 5

This is a property managed by an out of town owner who insists that renters adhere to one standard while they don't keep it themselves. For instance, renters must pay for an insurance policy to cover possible damages, as well as pay a mandatory cleaning fee. Superficially, the apt is clean enough, but on closer inspection, the range hood is filthy, all of the cabinets need a good going over, and my wife decided we'd have a better chance of not contracting a stomach bug if we avoided cooking anything in the unit at all. The unit is supposed to have 3 bedrooms, but one of them has a glass door with no curtain; not exactly the kind of privacy one might expect in a bedroom. But the real issue here is parking, which is a big deal, as this part of town is very congested. There is supposed to be one off-street space for each unit, however, the onsite manager who lives in one of the downstairs units seems not to understand the way the parking layout is meant to work. Every time we returned to the unit we were unable to get into our parking space either because the manager had blocked access to the driveway or another car had parked across the driveway while picking up food on nearby Freret St. Neither the manager or the owner ever actually picked up the phone when I called to let them know that I was unable to get in the driveway, and once, I was even told by the manager's boyfriend to circle the block a few times in the hopes that the situation would sort itself out! I suppose if your travel plans to New Orleans include being drunk the entire time you're there (a scenario that the completely out of whack floors will complement) you may not care much about the cleanliness of the unit or the inconsistency of the parking accommodations. If you think, however, that all the extra charges are going to get you a professionally managed VRBO by competent staff, be forewarned.

Owner's Response: Steve, this is a first. I am sure anyone reading the previous reviews and then reading yours must wonder, “What happened?” or “Where is the lie?” I live in California as stated in the Owner’s Bio. Property damage and cleaning fees are standard for STRs. There are other options available. You gave no objections prior to booking, nor did you inquire. Superficially, the apt is clean enough… WOW! In 3 years, this is a first! If this is true, this is what your complaint should have been about, not parking, which you described as the “real issue.” I take pride in the cleanliness of the apts and fired the last cleaning person after receiving 2 complaints. Both got a cleaning deposit refund – not because they asked for it, but because I adhere to a particular standard. If your wife decided not to cook in the unit, it was because she didn’t want to as people don’t come to N.O. to cook. The bedroom of which you speak has French doors with adjustable mini blinds and this is the first lack of privacy complaint. But the real issue here is parking… Parking is the ONLY thing that you spoke with me about. Neither the manager or the owner ever actually picked up the phone when I called… I responded within 30 mins and your email response to me was: Elaine: Thanks for responding promptly to my concerns about the parking. … Your picture showed your car parked against the wall. My response - Steve please park so that your car is accessible and I will speak with Doris. No one else is there until next month. Make it work for you. For the life of me I could not imagine why you would park so that your car was against a wall when there was space in the middle of the parking lot. ...and once, I was even told by the manager's boyfriend to circle the block a few times in the hopes that the situation would sort itself out! That is a lie. Doris explained to you that sometimes people blocked for a few minutes when they were picking up from a restaurant. That situation is out of our control! You were asked to drive around the block to keep from blocking traffic and keeping anyone else from passing. You were no further than the end of the block when the car moved. Doris offered you her parking space and you declined, saying it was OK, You asked for a discount for the parking inconvenience, or you would be writing a bad review. I was considering it until I found out you declined Doris' offered parking space. I refused to be blackmailed.
