THE NEIGHBORHOOD

Freret Street is located Uptown and is dubbed the Freret Arts and Entertainment District. It is an area that is experiencing revitalization to bring it back to its former glory. The Freret Corridor is just 8 blocks long but can claim great restaurants, cafes, a bakery, unique bar and other local flavors. Every April, the Freret Street Festival blocks the street for food trucks, musicians and over 200 vendors. The first Saturday of each month, at the corner of Napoleon and Freret is the Freret Street Market. The market is divided into food, art and flea, and is a great place to explore, eat and enjoy the music. Eat too much? Stop in at Anytime Fitness, open 24/7. Explore BrottWork Design Studio to see custom art glass or Freret Clay Center nearby. From the apartment it is just 8 blocks to St. Charles Ave. which is a major parade route during Mardi Gras. The St. Charles streetcar takes you to downtown, the Convention Center, Harrah's Casino and the French Quarters. It's 2.5 miles from the Super Dome and just a 15 walk to Tulane and Loyola Universities. For Jazz Fest, the Fairgrounds are just 5.17 miles away by car. Or, take the street car to Audubon Park and catch the shuttle. Oschner/Baptist Hospital is a few blocks away.

About Elaine Armour-Word

Years ago I made a promise to a friend. I told her I would come out of retirement and help her if she became a principal. Guess what? She I did! In June 2014, I completed my 40th year of teaching (OMG). I now serve as the Computer Coordinator for grades 2nd - 5th grade students.

I was born and raised in New Orleans. Graduated from St. Mary's Academy when it was in the French Quarters (long, long time ago). Moved to Los Angeles, CA to attend college and now live in the Bay Area. But, I still call NOLA home and come every 2 - 3 months. My husband and I love to travel. We have sailed most of the caribbean islands with friends, traveled Europe, South America and Africa. Paris is my most favored city. Since we travel with friends, we always rent apartments and prefer that to staying in hotels. I have tried to incorporate all of the good things I like about traveling and staying in homes to the space I have created for you because I want my guests to be comfortable, feel cared about and satisfied when you leave my special get-away home.

I am an avid reader with a library of over 700 books, most of them hardbacks. I have placed a number of them on the bookcase for my guests to enjoy. In my spare time I crochet, make jewelry, garden and feed a host of friends. I am in the process of creating a vegetable/herb garden in the back yard for the continued good health of all. Guests will be able to pick whatever is growing in the garden at the time.

I love the theater and see a minimum of 3 shows per year, including a few operas. There is also a collection of music and movies for guests to enjoy.

My Life's Motto: I believe that no matter what, things are in divine order in the universe. There is no greater power than Love and appreciation. I give thanks for all blessings - those I have received in the past - those I have now, in the present - and those I will have in the future. Thank you for considering and/or booking. Ma maison est votre maison.

Why Elaine Armour-Word chose New Orleans

After Katrina the New Orleans Redevelopment Agency (NORA) set about restoring sections of the city to its previous glory. Freret Street is now being redeveloped with new streets and new businesses. It is the new up-and-coming 'hip' area of N.O. and in a few years will rival popular Oak Street. It is walking distance to St. Charles Ave and the streetcar line as well as Tulane and Loyola Universities. The streetcar line will take you through a scenic route directly to downtown, the French Quarters, and Harrah's Casino. It's also a short distance to the Super Dome.

Great place to stay to visit Tulane!

The property was spacious and clean. Doris was helpful and available. It was great to have a parking space, near to restaurants and to Tulane. I would stay there again. Thanks for a great stay.

Freret Street, my new favorite spot!

  • 5 of 5

First off, let me just say how easy it is to work with Elaine and Doris. They are about as accommodating as you can get as hosts. If there was ever any questions or requests we may have had, we could always get in touch with one of them to help get the matter resolved right away. They really want to make sure you have a comfortable home to stay in while you are in their beautiful city.

In terms of the house, I am not sure you can find more space for a reasonable price. Two very large rooms with queen beds and and nice little cozy room up front with a comfy double. I was in New Orleans for Jazz Fest and needed to sleep in some mornings (ha!) and you can't hear too much from the rest of the house in those rooms. In general, the place feels very solid. There is an amazing little backyard patio down the stairs that is great to chill at after a long day. The full kitchen was great if we didn't want to spend more money on delicious restaurants.

The neighborhood itself is just amazing. I had no idea about the Freret neighborhood before renting Elaine's place the first time. But it has already grown in the couple years i have stayed there. Plenty of bars and restaurants within just a couple blocks of the house. You will never feel too limited here. The neighborhood is quiet and cozy which is sometimes hard to find in New Orleans. The area also felt very clean and walks down the street were pleasant.

With the coming of Uber and Lyft, you are never really too far away from the beautiful madness that is the French Quarter, Central Business District, Frenchman Street, and/or Garden District. Rides are typically 10-15 minutes to some of those places, and only about $7-12 each way. Not bad if you are in a pinch. The St. Charles street car is also very close if you want to be more scenic.

If I can help it, I would never want to stay anywhere else.

Thanks Elaine and Doris!

Terrific Stay!

  • 5 of 5

This apartment is in a great little part of town. The trip to Bourbon Street and the French Quarter is an easy walk and streetcar ride away (and Uber rides are easy), but after a day sightseeing and exploring, it was so nice to have the option to just walk a block or two to the neighborhood restaurants as well. There were several great options. The apartment itself is roomy and cute. We were so comfortable. The owner's communication was informative and complete. I would recommend this property enthusiastically!

Clean home, great neighbourhood, easy to get anywhere

  • 5 of 5

Elaine was right, the neighbourhood is great!! Beautiful area to walk around, magazine street is just a 15 minute walk away and it is an easy 10 minute walk to St Charles trolley. The house is great, very clean, fits 6 adults comfortably, nice back yard, and great front steps to sit and have a coffee and meet the neighbours! We had a blast and hope to be back next year!
