Great location with a beautiful view.

We loved our Nauvoo hideaway. The river was beautiful. The cabin was along the river and we loved the brief ride to and from the sites of Nauvoo. The trees were green and lush and the song birds spectacular. We saw cardinal, oriole, gold finch, and indigo bunting. The river was alive with turtles, ducks, and geese. It was fun to see the river barges. We also enjoyed accommodations that could house our entire family of nine for a great price. It was a great choice.

We were very excited to stay here when we booked this house. It seemed ideal for my sisters family and my family to stay. It was located near the river surrounded by trees. At arrival we noticed the place looked like it hasn't been vacuumed and there were many bugs and cobwebs in the corners of the house. I realize we are in the trees but if we wanted to camp with the bugs we would have brought a tent. Also, in the overview it said there was a bathroom upstairs. Not so, there were 2 bathrooms on the main floor and one of the was unusable. Water damage was on the ceiling with a large section of mold. I wonder how much mold is unseen? The shower head was disgusting and covered in mold as well as the tub itself. The pictures make the place look very nice and clean which is very deceiving, it felt dirty and grimy. I don't know how they would get rid of the smell but none of the kids wanted to sleep in the bunk house because of the awful smell, it's such a fun idea though. This place could be so great it just needs a bit of work. We have stayed in many VRBO properties and this is the first one I would not recommend...unless a few things were taken care of. Number one the mold issue.

On a positive note the rental property company was accommodating and found us a new rental.

Owner's Response: The guest called and the items were immediately addressed, so not sure of the purpose of the negative review. The items of concern with the home have been corrected. As always, we take our guests concerns very seriously, and were happy to ensure the guest had a great stay at another property. It's a great location, and a nice home.

Location

Nauvoo is an historic town established by the Mormons in 1839. It grew to be the largest town in Illinois, along with Chicago, with a population of 15,000 - 20,000 people. After the martyrdom of the founder of Mormonism, Joseph Smith, in 1844, Brigham Young led the Saints from Nauvoo to the Great Salt Lake over the Mormon Trail. Only about 1100 people remained in Nauvoo after the exodus of the Latter-day Saints. In the 1960's a descendant of one of the Nauvoo pioneers purchased his ancestor's home and began restoration. Nauvoo Restoration Inc. was established and since then over thirty historic homes and businesses have been restored or reconstructed, and are available for free tours. The Nauvoo Pageant is held every summer with thousands of visitors to the city to watch the performance of song and dance relating the Mormon history in Nauvoo. In addition, the Nauvoo Temple was restored in 2002, and is modeled after the original temple which was destroyed by arson in the late 1840's, and later by tornado in the 1850's. Visitors to Nauvoo enjoy the free tours and entertainment, where there is fun and education for the entire family! It is an extra treat to 'make your home away from home in Nauvoo!
