Buddha's Cup Retreat at Leleka'ae Falls is situated on 20 acres above Hilo Bay providing sweeping 360 degree views of the Pacific Ocean, Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. This unique retreat is perfectly suited for sports groups, reunions, an adventure vacation with family and friends or a corporate retreat and includes two 70' waterfalls on the property. This property is off-grid and totally self-sustainable featuring a state-of-the-art photovoltaic solar system. Enjoy the beauty and aloha spirit of Hawaii's Big Island and leave a light footprint on Nature at the same time.
Natural light spills into every room through large picture windows and French 10-light glass doors highlighting the unique koa, chocolate heart and tropical ash hardwood floors and hand-carved balinese doors. Tastefully decorated accommodations are found throughout the space featuring an upper and lower level. Each level includes a full kitchen, washer and dryer, three bedrooms, two living areas and two full baths.
The 1200' wrap-around upper level lanai provides guests with plenty of outdoor space to take in the superlative views. The large lanai area off the upper level family room features a grill, an area for dining and plenty of lounge chairs to take in the sights and sounds of the waterfalls.
Mauna Kea can be seen on clear days as a towering backdrop to the property and Mauna Loa, the largest active shield volcano in the world, can be seen above the ridge. Plumes from the current lava flow from the Kilauea volcano vent can be seen in the distance, about 20 miles away.
The large waterfalls on the property feature two waterfall ponds in which to swim or raft, however, guests do so at their own risk as we have no control over the weather up mountain. Large boulders and rocks dot the landscape and the air is fresh and oxygenated from the water's flow.
There is about 2 acres of lawn surrounding the house on the property with a gazebo for waterfall gazing. About 5 acres of the property has been planted with Hawaiian coffee and you'll enjoy a fresh, hot cup for breakfast since coffee is provided for our guests.
This 3,000 sq. ft. estate-styled Retreat will accommodate groups of up to 16 and is 10-15 minutes up mountain from Hilo and 20 minutes from the Hilo International Airport.

Once you visit you'll know why the owner chose this 20-acre property. It offers the best views on Hawaii's Big Island. In addition, being situated on 20 acres makes it ideally private, quiet and relaxing. And, the gentle sound of the water creates a perfect retreat.
The 1200 sq. ft wrap around deck and back lanai overlooking Leleka'ae Waterfalls is a unique feature providing endless views of Rainbows, Shooting Stars and Volcanoes. The custom built estate home features exotic wood floors, carved interior doors, granite countertops throughout, custom Ash wood kitchen cabinets and large windows to bring the outside, in. The beamed, vaulted custom wood ceilings open up the upper level space - yet it's situated only 10 minutes mauka (up mountain) from Hilo Town shopping, sights, beaches and restaurants. It's truly your perfect retreat to experience the adventure and lush, tropical environment that the East Side of Hawaii's Big Island has to offer.
Just as advertised. Well kept and decorated. very comfortable and tranquil.
Buddha's Cup Retreat was perfect for our team of 12! We stayed here for a few days prior to our Ragnar relay race, which started in Hilo. This property is amazing! The photos are accurate - stunning and so relaxing. The home was very clean and well-maintained. The property manager even brought us fresh fruit from the grounds! The only minor critique I have is the 6th bedroom. It really isn't a bedroom as much as a sitting room with a bed in it. The interior doors of this room have windows with sheer curtain panels - not private - and the room is a main entrance to the ground floor. We really enjoyed our stay, and will definitely consider it for future group vacations!
We absolutely loved our stay at Buddha's Cup Retreat! It was so much more beautiful than the photos made it look, and even though it's only 10-15 minutes from downtown, it felt so secluded and peaceful up there. The views were stunning all around, and petting the horses, picking fruit in the yard, and swimming down by the private waterfall was so much fun! Everything was extremely clean, the house was well equipped, the beds were super comfortable, and we were amazed by the solar set up-- plenty of power and hot water all the time even with 8 people staying there. Such a cool house, and for an awesome price! Next time we travel with a big group, we will definitely be returning here! This place is the best!!!
I have been facilitating retreats in Hawaii for five years now, and this was by far my favourite location. A large private house above Hilo with great views, and lots of space for guests to spend time in solitude and reflection, both indoors and out. One of the highlights is certainly the close proximity to the waterfalls, but the entire grounds lent themselves well to a group event such as ours.
The listing accurately reflecting the space, and everything was clean and well maintained. It is a bit of a drive from Hilo, but the road is good, easy to navigate, with very little traffic.
We did yoga every morning on the open lanai's which was lovely. One morning was too wet, but the downstairs living area was a suitable substitute. There were even brand new yoga mats supplied! The upstairs kitchen is large and functional, and the upstairs living room was comfortable for our whole group to congregate, as was the covered lanai.
Anna was a pleasure to deal with for all of the booking and pre-retreat planning. Even when there was some confusion around my adding extra day, Anna stayed on top of it until it was straitened out. Then Neal took over once we arrived, and helped us out with our requests, right down to making sure we had sufficient high quality drinking water.
There were a couple of small things that could have been responded to in a more timely fashion, such as the replacement of the barbeque.
Overall the space. location, ambiance and customer service were excellent. I would definitely book there again and certainly recommend it if you are considering a retreat with a small group.
Well maintained estate on a coffee plantation.
Serene and peaceful.
A must for the travelers seeking peace and quite minutes above the city of Hilo, Hawaii.
The Leleka'ae falls will sing you a lullaby to have sweet dreams by.
We have been to Hawaii 9 times and Buddhas cup retreat has been the best home (by far) that we have rented.
If you are looking to get away from it all this is the place.
The property manager was great.
It is an off grid home with plenty of solar power and has satellite T.V. and great internet access.
We were able to stream net flix with no lag at all.
15 minutes from downtown close to all food and shops.
Truly a great place to relax and recharge your batteries.
We are looking forward to coming back as soon as we can.
I have stayed at Buddha's Cup Retreat twice so far, each time with a large group of around 15 people. My experiences here have been excellent and I hope to come again when the chance arises. Please allow me to share a few things that might appeal to anyone interested in staying here.
The house is located above Hilo town a bit, about a 15-20 minute drive from the town center. It enjoys the peace and calmness of seclusion while not being too far away from town.
The house is off the grid in terms of water and electricity. Power is gathered via solar panels and a generator when needed. The charge level for the house can be easily monitored by a panel in the kitchen. My group, consisting of 15 people, resided at the house while we participated in a weekend-long sports tournament. Even with this many people fussing around the house and doing many loads of laundry, we were never hindered with any power issues. Most often the need to use the generator will come at night when the sun isn't out to charge the home's battery. The generator is simple to operate, and management will provide extra fuel when needed.
The style and furniture of the home I do love. It made all of us feel instantly comfortable; we were all charmed, as if we were a big family on vacation together. With a wide selection of ambient music and the constant rush of the waterfalls behind the property, you could lose hours swinging in the hammock out on the top patio, overlooking Hilo in all its warmth.
And my favorite part! The waterfalls! There are 3 total. One at the top of the property which you can only view, but the lower two have trails that lead down to them. The waterfalls are advertised by Anna and her team, and it is okay to go down from my understanding, although they do express caution. I do too. Flash flooding in times of heavy rain is possible, and in certain areas of the pond, the current can be strong. Most of all though, fresh water is more difficult to tread in than salt water. I am born and raised in Hawaii and have swam most of my life, but even I tired quickly treading in the freshwater. Nonetheless, they are truly wondrous to see and be in. After a long and exhausting tournament, the cold waters of the fall were rejuvenating, both physically and mentally. The biggest highlight of my trip. If you are able, do take a look and a dip.
All and all I really love this place! Many thanks to Anna and her team for providing such a great venue for amazing experiences to be created.
Hawaii's Big Island features some of the most picturesque and varied beach landscapes in the islands. Here you’ll find not just white sand beaches but black sand and green sand beaches with olivine crystals. And along with beautiful resort beaches, Hawaii Island also has rugged, off-the-beaten-path sands that are wild, remote and rewarding.
Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens and Akaka Falls State Park are within a 20 minute drive up the Hamakua Coastline. Volcanoes National Park is 45 minutes South of Hilo.
