About Amy McLaughlin

I'm Amy and my husband's name is Shawn. We were both born and raised in Charleston, WV, where we still live and we both work for the same non-profit organization. Charleston is only about one hour from Fayetteville, so lucky for us, the best vacation spot in West Virginia is close by. Lafayette Flats began with our simple desire to get out of town. We love our home in Charleston's East End but we really like to travel. We found out early in our relationship that we travel together well and we love to do it as often as we can. We love taking weekend driving trips to places like Asheville, Columbus, Charlotte and Louisville, and we've been all over our home state of West Virginia. Two years ago we drove across the country on Route 66 and last fall we toured Northern California - Yosemite, Redwoods, Wine Country - we loved it all. But big trips are few and far between, so we satisfy our travelin' Jones by making the drive up to Fayetteville as often as we can. Maybe it's the Bacon Jam at The Secret Sandwich Society or the breathtaking views from Long Point Trail, but something keeps us coming back again and again. We looked for a small apartment in Fayetteville that we could rent, just to have a home base where we could escape to on weekends but found nothing suitable. After months of searching we decided to take on a project where we could build our own space. We looked a several opportunities, but the one that caught our eye was the historic building on the corner of Court Street and Wiseman Avenue - known as 'The Malcolm Building.' This building was built in 1906 to house The Bank of Fayette and is on the National Register of Historic Places as part of Fayetteville's Historic District. Our home in Charleston is in a 100 year-old townhouse community, so I guess it's safe to say that we are drawn to old buildings. We spent the summer and fall of 2013 renovating the building - doing much of the work ourselves. We are eager to show off our space!

Why Amy McLaughlin chose West Virginia

Our love for Fayetteville and the New River Gorge area caused us to something we had never done before: We bought and renovated this historic cut stone building, transforming the top two floors into four apartment style vacation rentals. Eddy is one of four flats in the building, and the one that we call our second home. Since it is on the Historic Registry, we were very intentional in our renovation plan to leave the building intact as much as possible. Originally built to be an office building, each floor only had one common bathroom and the heating in the building was hot water radiators. Since it was built before electricity, the electrical system was hodgepodge of makeshift circuits and ancient fuse boxes. Along with theses negatives, though, were a lot of positives: The beautiful original woodwork is still there and the fortress-like construction means that the building is very sturdy. The beautiful cut-stone exterior looks exactly like it did when it was built a century ago. Our renovation plans preserved the woodwork and the basic configuration of the building. Installing a new electrical system and the plumbing necessary to support two additional bathrooms and kitchens was done in such a way as not to change the character of the building. Fire codes made us make some alterations to doorways, but overall the building looks as it has for the last century. But in spite of the ancient spaces of this small town former bank building, the interior design is chic, modern and urban. We want to offer visitors to Fayetteville something completely different from the campsites, cabins and large vacation home rentals available in the area. Furnished with all the comforts of home and decorated to the nines with local original art and many unique design elements, this is not your typical vacation rental! We want you to more than just feel at home - we want you to wish that you lived here!

What makes this apartment unique

Most lodging in the New River Gorge area is campsites, cabins or oversized vacation homes in remote settings. Lafayette Flats offers a small town main street lodging experience with walkable access to unique locally owned restaurants, shops and activities. The decor, with an emphasis on local original art, provides visitors with a rich cultural experience. Travelers interested in history will enjoy staying in a building listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the stunning view of the Fayette County Courthouse. Even though Lafayette Flats sits on main street downtown, it still is walking distance from National Park trail heads and all of the outdoor adventure that the New River Gorge provides.

Amazing apartments with incredible attention to details.

The flats themselves are stunning. Artistic and modern with everything you need for a weekend stay. Right downtown so you can easily walk to my favorite restaurants. Try Vandals Kitchen for the best espresso and breakfast in town. Then for lunch or dinner hit up secret sandwich society. I get the Fillmore. Best veggie sandwich for 300 miles.

We were visiting family in Fayetteville and stayed at the Fayetteville Flats. The apartment was large and comfortable and we walked down to The Station for a drink before calling it a night.

We'll stay here again the next time we're in town.

Gorgeous, comfortable and convenient.

I was absolutely blown away when I walked into the Lafayette Flats. I have stayed in a lot of nice vacation rentals and AirBNB properties over the years, but none were as artistically decorated or comfortably equipped with the level of details as the Eddy. The location is great for walking to the best dining options in Fayetteville. The hosts made check in very easy; they answered all of my questions promptly and were very helpful during the booking process. The hosts' attention to detail was exceptional. There are games and extra toiletries available in the main area and coffee makers and coffee in the flats, as well as everything you would need to cook a meal. In addition to the incredible accommodations, I was so impressed about the hosts' obvious commitment to supporting local artists. There were numerous pieces of art from local artists and the hosts maintain an annual Writer in Residence program. I definitely hope to stay at the Lafayette Flats in the future, and I can't recommend them enough.

A joy to return to at the end of a long day of having fun outdoors!

As good as they are, the photos on the website don't really do justice to the Lafayette Flats. As soon as my daughter and I walked into the historic building that houses the apartments and saw the wide blue painted stairway going up, lined with artwork on the walls, I knew we were in a special place. The door to each apartment features a transom window with a unique abstract pattern of brilliantly colorful stained glass.

We entered the Eddy to find ourselves in a large, light filled and well-thought-out space with lots of windows, decorated in a cool palette of aquas and blues punctuated with lively complementary colors. It was fun to discover delightful, whimsical touches everywhere - such as a wire-twist figure rappelling up the side of the refrigerator - and know that Amy and Sean, the owners, must have had a grand time putting their own stamp on the individual apartments.

Our apartment was very clean and comfortable. We might have preferred a firmer mattress in the master bedroom, but the linens were good and the towels were big and soft and fluffy. Even though we did not cook, we found the kitchen very well equipped. I don't know if anything can be done about it, but the air conditioner kicking in makes quite a racket. My daughter, a light sleeper and who wound up in the master bedroom, found that earplugs did the job. For me, sleeping on the couch was very restful. The wooden blinds do a great job of keeping out the light in the mornings. The bathroom is spacious and the shower head delivered a good jet of water.

All in all we had a wonderful stay in the Eddy. I certainly hope to return to this beautiful part of West Virginia and get to experience the other apartments in LaFayette Flats.

It is one of our goals to introduce Lafayette Flats visitors to a new way to think about West Virginia. We want to surprise our guests with the real West Virginia and nothing will make us happier than if they walk away with an impression that is different from the prejudices they might have held when they arrived. We have tried to do this through the design, art and literature of each flat. We think that Fayetteville itself helps to illustrate this new narrative. Here is a place that through the years has attracted the attention of many people with its amazing beauty and rich supply of natural resources. But instead of repeating our state's history, where those resources are scooped up and taken away on a train, the New River Gorge has been able to remain beautifully intact and now welcomes people to come here to enjoy it.
