About Amy McLaughlin & Shawn Means

I'm Amy and my husband's name is Shawn. We were both born and raised in Charleston, WV, where we still live and we both work for the same non-profit organization. Charleston is only about one hour from Fayetteville, so lucky for us, the best vacation spot in West Virginia is close by. Lafayette Flats began with our simple desire to get out of town. We love our home in Charleston's East End but we really like to travel. We found out early in our relationship that we travel together well and we love to do it as often as we can. We love taking weekend driving trips to places like Asheville, Columbus, Charlotte and Louisville, and we've been all over our home state of West Virginia. Two years ago we drove across the country on Route 66 and last fall we toured Northern California - Yosemite, Redwoods, Wine Country - we loved it all. But big trips are few and far between, so we satisfy our travelin' Jones by making the drive up to Fayetteville as often as we can. Maybe it's the Bacon Jam at The Secret Sandwich Society or the breathtaking views from Long Point Trail, but something keeps us coming back again and again. We looked for a small apartment in Fayetteville that we could rent, just to have a home base where we could escape to on weekends but found nothing suitable. After months of searching we decided to take on a project where we could build our own space. We looked a several opportunities, but the one that caught our eye was the historic building on the corner of Court Street and Wiseman Avenue - known as 'The Malcolm Building.' This building was built in 1906 to house The Bank of Fayette and is on the National Register of Historic Places as part of Fayetteville's Historic District. Our home in Charleston is in a 100 year-old townhouse community, so I guess it's safe to say that we are drawn to old buildings. We spent the summer and fall of 2013 renovating the building - doing much of the work ourselves. We are eager to show off our space!

Why Amy McLaughlin & Shawn Means chose Fayetteville

Our love for Fayetteville and the New River Gorge area caused us to something we had never done before: We bought and renovated this historic cut stone building, transforming the top two floors into four apartment style vacation rentals. Eddy is one of four flats in the building, and the one that we call our second home. Since it is on the Historic Registry, we were very intentional in our renovation plan to leave the building intact as much as possible. Originally built to be an office building, each floor only had one common bathroom and the heating in the building was hot water radiators. Since it was built before electricity, the electrical system was hodgepodge of makeshift circuits and ancient fuse boxes. Along with theses negatives, though, were a lot of positives: The beautiful original woodwork is still there and the fortress-like construction means that the building is very sturdy. The beautiful cut-stone exterior looks exactly like it did when it was built a century ago. Our renovation plans preserved the woodwork and the basic configuration of the building. Installing a new electrical system and the plumbing necessary to support two additional bathrooms and kitchens was done in such a way as not to change the character of the building. Fire codes made us make some alterations to doorways, but overall the building looks as it has for the last century. But in spite of the ancient spaces of this small town former bank building, the interior design is chic, modern and urban. We want to offer visitors to Fayetteville something completely different from the campsites, cabins and large vacation home rentals available in the area. Furnished with all the comforts of home and decorated to the nines with local original art and many unique design elements, this is not your typical vacation rental! We want you to more than just feel at home - we want you to wish that you lived here!

What makes this apartment unique

Most lodging in the New River Gorge area is campsites, cabins or oversized vacation homes in remote settings. Lafayette Flats offers a small town main street lodging experience with walkable access to unique locally owned restaurants, shops and activities. The decor, with an emphasis on local original art, provides visitors with a rich cultural experience. Travelers interested in history will enjoy staying in a building listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the stunning view of the Fayette County Courthouse. Even though Lafayette Flats sits on main street downtown, it still is walking distance from National Park trail heads and all of the outdoor adventure that the New River Gorge provides.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Notes:
It is one of our goals to introduce Lafayette Flats visitors to a new way to think about West Virginia. We want to surprise our guests with the real West Virginia and nothing will make us happier than if they walk away with an impression that is different from the prejudices they might have held when they arrived. We have tried to do this through the design, art and literature of each flat. We think that Fayetteville itself helps to illustrate this new narrative. Here is a place that through the years has attracted the attention of many people with its amazing beauty and rich supply of natural resources. But instead of repeating our state's history, where those resources are scooped up and taken away on a train, the New River Gorge has been able to remain beautifully intact and now welcomes people to come here to enjoy it.

Charming and convenient!

  • 5 of 5

The Eddy was awesome and adorable. The local art, local books, and decor were all so charming and fun. The location was convenient, and we walked to all of our favorite places in the area (Waterstone, Pies and Pints, Cathedral Cafe, and Epic Escape Room [which had a 10% discount for staying at Lafayette Flats]). The owners were so friendly and accommodating to our needs. Great communication from the owners ensured we had a stress-free vacation. We had one very minor issue during our stay, and the owners promptly stopped by to personally address the issue. We were visiting for rock climbing, and all climbers will love the convenience of this location and sleeping in a big comfortable bed after a hard day of climbing. Go stay at Lafayette Flats--you will be blown away!!!

What a wonderful, dreamy apartment!

  • 5 of 5

Three families came to stay here for a weekend wedding at the Gorge, and we all had fabulous accommodations. We stayed at Eddy, the purple and teal decorated flat. We loved the cleanliness, the contemporary decor, and all the cute touches that the owners put much thought into - from all the books and paintings, furniture pillows and throws, to the organic soaps, the chandeliers, and mirrors. I loved the artsy pieces - the tiny ceramic fairy door in the bathroom, the stained glass lamp, and the coiled figure rappelling down the side of the refrigerator. The mattress was nice and firm, and we loved the large shower. The only downside was that there were two flights of narrow stairs to climb to our flat - we realized all too soon that our 60-year old bodies were out of shape as we lugged our suitcases up and down those 42 steps. Overall, this was a great place to stay, the nearby restaurants were yummy, and the town residents were friendly.

The coolest spot in the coolest small town!

  • 5 of 5

Without a doubt, our stay at the Lafayette Flats was exactly what we needed during the second leg of our trip to the New River Gorge. We are newlywed climbers, and decided to spend the first three nights of our mini-moon in a more rustic space, followed by two nights in the Eddy flat. Boy were we excited to get to the warm, beautiful Eddy flat, with a huge walk-in shower, fluffy towels, and all the comforts of home (well, the home we WISH we lived in). The flat is spacious, has the amenities for cooking and hosting a small dinner party for four, and is walkable to the best restaurants in Fayetteville. We met Shawn and Amy on our second night there, and they are incredibly hospitable and kind people. The whole building is beautifully decorated with an artistic edge, and showcases the uniqueness of the town. Without a doubt we recommend staying at the Flats, and look forward to our next visit to Fayetteville!

A fabulous 4 night stay at the Eddy

  • 5 of 5

A beautiful place to stay in a beautiful part of the country. Numerous personal touches made the experience exceptional. The renovations to a historic building were quite impressive and quite comfortable. Thanks to both of you for making your place so inviting and pleasant. My wife and I can hardly wait to come back and stay.

Quaint accomodations in a quaint town ❤️

  • 5 of 5

The Flat was beautiful and clean. It was spacious with plenty of seating and accomodations for 4 even though there were only 2 of us. The full size kitchen is a bonus as we cooked a full meal twice - it could use measuring tools and a few other cooking utensil basics but overall not a deterrant!! There was an errant barking dog in the neighborhood but the local businesses are wonderful - especially the lawyer downstairs. Walking distance to everything! The cleaning staff is courteous and the owner's response time is Phenomenal!! The best I've ever experienced theough Homeaway or VRBO! Fayetteville was a great place to land for a weekend!

Cutest, unique rental!

  • 5 of 5

Ahh, what to say about LaFayette Flats besides best decision ever! This flat was perfect! The Eddy was emaculanty clean and the decor was phenomenal. We loved all the small touches of art everywhere and the somewhat hidden items such as the gnome and the fairy door. The towels and linens where great and the coloring books in the room where a plus for my kids. I would say my favorite feature with the flat was the building library. For a book nerd like me, this rocked! We rented the Eddy for a weekend elopement and it was absolutely perfect. I'm hoping this will be a new anniversary tradition
