Welcome to Birch Point Cottage!
This peaceful and relaxing Scandinavian-style Maine cottage/retreat sits on five very private and secluded acres on the shore of a beautiful tidal ocean cove in Owls Head, Maine.
Recently restored, this light and airy post-and-beam barn-style home is a perfect blend of European style and Maine craftsmanship. The entire house can be rented for a comfortable, relaxing stay on the coast of Maine, and features 3 large bedrooms, 2 full baths, an open spacious floor plan, and great water views and access to the tidal cove.
The main floor is a beautiful, comfortable, sunny, open living area consisting of a modern and fully equipped kitchen/dining room/living room with oiled white oak floors throughout. There are large windows offering water views of the cove, and double doors that open onto a spacious deck, bringing the outdoors in. There is also a large den/media room/library/office. Upstairs are 3 large airy bedrooms with vaulted ceilings, skylights, whitewashed rustic pine floors, and comfortable beds. There are 2 full modern bathrooms- 1 up and one down, as well as an outdoor shower.
3 Bedrooms (sleeps 6 total) include:
- A large master bedroom with 1 Queen bed.
- A second large bedroom with 1 Queen bed.
- and a 3rd bedroom with 2 twin beds.
The outdoor area surrounding the home is nicely but simply landscaped, has an outdoor fire pit by the water, and ample lawn area to spread out, entertain, and play. Access to the tidal cove/water is 75 feet from the backdoor, offering swimming, kayaking, or paddle boarding steps from the house (water activities at high tide only, check tide charts).
This home is extremely private but also close to many area attractions and conveniences. Get away from it all and relax in a tranquil setting surrounded by nature, wildlife, and the beauty of the Maine coast. This is truly a unique and beautiful property and setting with a casual, comfortable, laid-back Scandinavian-inspired coastal living style!
There is a well-equipped kitchen with commercial gas range and dishwasher, washer/dryer, an outdoor shower, and a spacious deck with gas grill, summer furniture, etc.
The cottage has basic wi-fi as well as 3G/4G cell coverage. The wifi is good for basic online access, but is not always powerful enough for streaming movies or videos. There is no cable TV, but the house does have a DVD player with an assortment of movies and a flat screen TV. There is also a Tivoli radio in case you want to know what's going on in the world. Nice cotton linens and towels (beach & bath) are provided, as well as beach chairs & beach umbrella.
Guests with well behaved dogs are encouraged to bring them (upon approval). We know they like to go on vacation too, and miss us when we are gone! The home and property are well off the main road, and there is room for them to run, play, and swim (dog-towels provided too!). Owls Head is a small coastal town with an active commercial fishing community (lobstering primarily). Fresh lobster can be bought nearby. There is also a wonderful fish market in nearby Rockland. Other attractions and amenities include; Owls Head Light (a State Park w/lighthouse), accessible beaches (which are all great for small children), post office, a winery, and a general store.
10 minutes away is the artistic seaport town of Rockland, with great restaurants and cafes, museums and galleries, entertainment, shopping, and more. A short drive up the coast brings you to the picturesque coastal towns of Camden and Rockport- a destination for hiking, sailing, skiing, and other outdoor adventures.
Other great areas to explore in the mid-coast include; the Saint George Peninsula and Port Clyde; Camden Hill State Park; Belfast; the islands of North Haven, Vinyl Haven, Islesboro, and Monhegan (great day trips!) and more. Summer brings the annual Lobster Festival, The Blues Festival, Boat Show, Farmers Markets, blueberry picking, yard sales, and lobster bakes! The owner will leave all guests a detailed list of area attractions and activities, and can offer suggestions based on your interests.
Also, this area boasts a thriving food scene, and there are many wonderful restaurants, eateries, farmers markets, and wineries which the owner will be happy to point out for you (including where to get the best lobster roll, fresh seafood & local produce, or hand-crafted cocktail!).
There is no public transportation in the immediate area. Guests will need a car to explore.
The house is a short drive to Owls Head airport, a small local airport catering to small private planes, and service to Boston via Cape Air Airlines. If arriving at the Owls Head airport, pick-up can be arranged with the host, and car rentals are available there. Buses run daily from Boston and points south, to Rockland.
