Troy and Robin - Troy and I have lived in Newport News, VA for 19 years. Troy owns his own construction business and I retired from the Navy in 2012 after 29 years of service. We have a son in the Navy and our daughter works for an outdoor recreation company.
Robin and Troy Suntheimer purchased this lodge in 2013
In Oct 2013, Troy and I traveled to Gatlinburg, TN and fell in love with the mountain views and cabin life and decided to find a cabin of our own. We found a cabin in Grayson County for sale and we contacted a realtor. We immediately felt at home in Independence and fell in love with our vacation home, the mountain it sits on, the area and the people. I think you will love it just as much as we do. We closed on 20 Dec 2013 and have been up there more times than we can count.
When we first saw this lodge (cabin just doesn't do it justice) we noticed the numerous windows and the beautiful stain. We walked the deck which wraps around all but one side of the lodge and couldn't get enough of the million dollar view. We knew this was the place for us and hadn't even been inside. With the large master bedroom with its own deck, the loft with the amazing views, the high end appliances, wet bar and 22 acres we were hooked. The other two bedrooms are cozy and private. The finished basement isn't like most, as it has several windows and french doors that lead out onto the patio. While sitting in the hot tub you can watch the sunset over the mountains which is spectacular. The wood stove keeps the basement very warm and if you open a window, the wood stove will heat the main floor. The living room has a beautiful stone fireplace, high ceilings and a mountain view. There isn't a room in the lodge that isn't cozy and comfortable. If you come to our home, you won't want to leave.
We spent a long week end, and thoroughly enjoyed our time. Robin was friendly and helpful throughout the process. The cabin was clean, cozy and welcoming. I especially appreciated how well appointed it was. It was so nice not to have to pack dish soap, trash bags etc. for a week end trip. They even provided coffee! Should we ever need to stay in this area again, we will certainly be returning to this little slice of heaven!
We have had very few vacation rental experiences which caused us to begin and end our tenure with amazement and appreciation. Accolades are insufficient; you must see for yourself! Thank you, Robin and Troy, for our most remarkable vacation at your lovely lodge.
The property was exactly as described in the VRBO listing. Cabin was beautiful, clean, fully decorated in every room, spacious, with a breath taking view. The grounds were very neat, clean and spacious for outside activities. The location was perfect; directions very clear and easy to follow. It offers a perfect relaxing get away for families of all ages with priviacy and a scenic view of the mountains. I hope to have the opportunity to return for another visit soon!
Maybe the best vacation at a VRBO we have ever had. The Black Bear Lodge home is in fantastic shape. I must have taken 20 pictures off the deck of the mountains with the wispy clouds hanging like smoke over them. The kids enjoyed the Jacuzzi with their Mom and counted the number of black bears in the house and came up with more than 400 (about 100 were in a single painting). We asked the Black Bear Lodge owners who they would recommend for horseback riding and were told to go with Tommy Billings (search "Tommy Billings horseback riding"), who was great. We took our 2 kids along for the ride as well (6 and 8 years old) and they had a blast. We went to Pilot Mountain State Park via car (aka the town of Mount Pilot from the Andy Griffith Show) and did the hike at the top that takes you around the exposed rock edifice. From there we went to Mount Airy (aka Mayberry from the Andy Griffith Show), saw the Andy Griffith and Siamese Twins museums (one admission gets you both) and had dinner at a good restaurant, Thai Cafe. Mount Airy had an old car show going on in main street of the town that day which was an added treat. We went to the Grayson Highlands State Park and went to the top of the mountain (via car) to the Visitors Center. The Park has a great gift shop with friendly people and some interesting exhibits. The Visitor Center is feeding about 20 hummingbirds at a time with 3 feeders outside. We hiked down to the see the waterfalls on Cabin Creek Trail and found we were totally alone on that trail and at the falls that day in August. On the way home from our too short visit at Black Bear Lodge we stopped at the Natural Bridge, with a beautiful hike along a creek to see an Indian village and waterfalls. Everything on the trip, daily excursions and the quality of the house exceeded our expectations.
This our second time coming to Black Bear Lodge, and we love it! The cabin itself is beautiful and comfortable. The area around the cabin and the views are outstanding. Robin and Troy make sure that there are plenty of things available for all of their guests. My son-in-law and grandson especially love the "man cave" in the basement. We all appreciate how clean the cabin is and all the extras that are provided such as detergent, baggies, paper towels, etc. If you're looking for a place that will give you a great vacation, this is the place!
The quality of the house, the decor and the view is the best I've ever had. Beds are comfortable, the kitchen is more than adequately equipped and everything is clean and in great shape. We will stay here again.
At 2900 feet above sea level, this secluded mountain lodge sits on 22 acres on Pine Mountain in Independence, Virginia. We don't recommend motorcycles unless you are use to riding on gravel. The driveway is 700ft and can be challenging in some areas. The lodge is only 23 miles from Grayson Highland State Park where you will find hiking and horse trails that lead to beautiful waterfalls. Mount Rogers and Whitetop Mountain join Grayson Highland State Park to the North where you will find hiking, trout fishing, hunting and spectacular views. The New River winds its way through Grayson County and offers fishing, kayaking, canoeing, white water rafting and tubing. Black Bear Lodge is all about location. It is 5 miles from local shopping in Independence and the Historic 1908 Courthouse and easy driving distance to Galax for more shopping, restaurants, antiques, bowling and a cinema. If you want to get away from it all and still be close enough to civilization, then Black Bear Lodge is the perfect place for you. Independence and Galax are only minutes away and just a little further is Sparta, NC. For the outdoor enthusiasts, discover caves and spectacular waterfalls. Do you like to bike? Then you will surely enjoy the famous Virginia Creeper and Independence Bike trails that are relatively close. Horseback riding is also available. All you have to do is book a trail ride with a local stable. If you are a golfer, there are a slew of golf courses from which to choose. If you like river sports, then you are in luck. There is plenty of rafting, kayaking, and canoeing. For the fisherman, the New River offers a variety of fish and the ponds are stocked with trout. If you are tired of grilling, check out the historic Davis-Bourne Inn and tavern for dinner. For those who enjoy fine wine, be sure to visit Mt. Vale Vineyards in Galax. If you are here in the summer, be sure to attend the Grayson Wine Festival that is held every August and for those who stay with us in the fall, you can’t miss the Mountain Foliage Festival.
