About Jan Ferry-Axman

The Ferry Family is a large and close knit group. I am the youngest of 4 children and act as property manager for our family. I live near by in Rochester NY. This cottage was purchased after the one next door when my sister retired to be near my parents and thought the best place to have a second home. This makes for a great family vacation as we gather every year and use BOTH cottages. VRBO 166827 and VRBO 563369.

We love the space and flexibility this allows and love our family cottages.

Jan Ferry-Axman purchased this cottage in 2000

Why Jan Ferry-Axman chose Sodus Bay

The Ferry family is large and close knit. Our parents purchased the first property over 30yrs ago with the idea of fixing it up for retirement. Over the years we have loved visiting and over 30 years we have become a pretty large group who has spent a great deal of time trying out all the activities and restaurants in the area. Two or the four siblings who own the cottage live locally near Rochester but our larger family is spread from San Diego to Fla and NYC. We all LOVE to come back to Sodus and bring our many kids and now grand kids.

What makes this cottage unique

The Sprongs Bluff area, a small cove set into Lake Ontario, is remote and beautiful. We love that we have a huge lot, beautiful sunsets and LOTS of space. The little set of cottages here are completely surrounded by NYS forever wild parkland. The old Girl Scout camp next door was also purchased by NYS and turned into Beachwood Sate Park. We have a private path leading back there. Beachwood has Maxwell Creek running through it as well as Maxwell Bay. This makes for great Canoe and Kayak trips into the Maxwell Creek area. Bald Eagles nest on the point and beauty and tranquility surround you. Lastly when you want to eat out, get a fishing charter, enjoy a drink and entertainment, walk a sandy beach and long pier a quick 3-4mi. drive to Sodus Point and additional fun can easily be had. Also we are about 3-4mi. in the other direction to Sodus village for a post office, grocery store, library, bank and more restaurants. We think we have the perfect spot to enjoy peace, beauty quiet and a just about any fun activity.

Beautiful Cottage with amazing views of Lake Ontario

  • 5 of 5

My family and I stayed for a week in July and had a wonderful time. The home was set up perfectly for our weeks stay. Had all the extra's we needed to make it comfortable. The deck is absolutely beautiful and perfect to sit on while watching the water hit the shore, sunrise and sunset. Jan was very helpful and met us when we got there to show us around. She had a ton of information on the area and brochures available for us to see what activities were around us. She told us to contact her if we needed anything...however, we did not have any issues. :) The area is beautiful, peaceful and cozy. Short trip (5 minutes) into Sodus Point to the beach and light house. The only thing I would say negative would be the amount of stairs down to the water. (water access) This wouldn't be he cottage to stay at if you have any disabilities and can't navigate stairs well. However, they also own the cottage next door which is equally as beautiful and better access to the water. I would recommend this house to families looking for quiet, relaxing time away with their family. Thanks Jan for your hospitality....we had a great time!

Relaxing and beautiful

  • 5 of 5

We were very pleased to stay at this lake house for a week for our family vacation. We did use the boat rentals and were able to go out on the water a couple times within the week and enjoyed kyacking and row boating. Other days were quite windy with pretty big waves but we didnt mind relaxing out on the spacious back deck (where we spent most of our time) Being right on the lake was perfect as we could go out swimming or view the lake at anytime.

We had 5 adults and 2 children and fit comfortably in the bedrooms as well as the livingroom and dining areas. We brought our meals/food with us for the week and it was exciting to find portable pantry shelving in the front closet that we were able to pull out and use. We used the grill almost everyday and never ran out of gas. The stove seems to take awhile to boil water but as long as you use the lids it didnt seem as bad.

There did tend to be a lot of spiders BUT being on the lake that is expected. The mosquitoes are not bad as you have wind almost all the time. We had a fire a couple times and enjoyed watching the lake as the sun set. Absolutly gorgeous scenery. My 7 year old daughter was very sad to leave, as we all were!

Overall, we would deffinatly recommend this property to families and/or couples, friends as a week vacation or even a weekend get away.

Thank you Jan for providing a wonderful experience for us!

Owner's Response: Glad you enjoyed your stay, and took advantage of the classics. Campfires, cookouts, swimming and sunsets. I do hope you got to Sodus Point and enjoyed the sandy beach, pier, marinas, restaurants, and lighthouse museum. If not well maybe next time. Hope we see you again next year. Thanks Jan

Beautiful Sunsets and lake views!

  • 4 of 5

Jan is a very good hostess. She was prompt in communicating with us. The cottage is a bit worn but cozy. This is to be expected when you are permitted to bring doggies. Our dogs had a blast walking in the state park a short walk from the cottage. Very good directions were left for the supermarket (very short drive) and the farmers market and cafe. Jan recommended the market to us and what a great pick. Outstanding pie and lunch!

It gets a bit hot in the cottage if the wind does not come off the lake. In a storm or high winds the lake is great to look at. We appreciated being able to take our dogs as they enjoyed the trip. The rental is perfect for relaxation. the listing was truthful and accurate as well. I give 4 stars because of the heat (not owners fault and she supplied plenty of fans).it would be a 5 star in the fall!

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for your kind review. It was great to have you! Glad you got to Burnaps too, one of my favorite simple country places. I too love their pies and fresh fruit and more. I do hope we see you back again for a visit soon. Fall is a great time to visit and one of my favorite times to visit.

don't overlook this GREAT overlook of a Great Lake!

  • 4 of 5

It's all about the SUNSETS! Every night a new experience... often changing views from day to day and sometimes minute to minute. Sunrises were almost as good, though they have a nasty habit of showing up soooo early in the morning: whos idea was that??

The deck is magnificent, and the trip down to the water well worthwhile even at cooler times. Lake Ontario is next best thing to ocean views... and better for boating. Plenty of wildlife too! Don't forget the state park on adjoining land, with easy access trails and ponds just 15-20 feet from this property line. There are TWO lighthouses nearby also: the historic (museum) Sodus Point light is impressive high on the bluff, and the newer and active pier light down by an excellent beach. Even more stunning during rough weather in my estimation. Add a very nice farm market/cafe (with Giffords ice cream!) just beyond the access road and you are set for the week.

The home itself is a bit worn but clean and comfy... I enjoyed having signs of living around me, though some may not. Jan was kinda frantic (lol) but always ready to help with information or issues that might come up. The kitchen is well stocked (saves a lot of grocery runs for things forgotten) and quite functional. I would have to say the living room furniture is in poor shape, somewhat uncomfortable, and needs replacement. Then again, the deck is well furnished and we certainly spent most of our time there, doing more grilling than we ever get around to at home. And watching the sunsets.... did I mention the sunsets?? Hahaha! We had mixed weather conditions during our stay, but EVERY day was well spent, even when we had to light up the iron stove for heat... and ambience.

The most relaxing vacation ever.

Owner's Response: Thanks Rick, your kind review! I do deeply care about the guests having a good experience. And Yes I Was frantic as I do try hard to make sure all is well set up and running well. You were wonderful guests and I particularly thank you for your patience at check in. We were running late w/cleaning and you were more than gracious about that. We really love the area and wish all to share in the experience with kind guest such as your family. Loved your teddybear of a dog too, could tell he is an old sweetie. Hope we see you back again soon! Thanks again Jan

Sodus Cottage

  • 3 of 5

The cottage was cozy, the deck was beautiful. There was plenty of linens and towels, comfy beds, and a fully stocked kitchen.

The lake is beautiful, but the beach is very rocky. Use much caution when entering the water,if you are swimming.

Thank You for your hospitality. We enjoyed our stay!

Owner's Response: So glad you enjoyed your stay! We do work hard to make it welcoming and comfortable for guests. However, sadly this year we have lost our nice beach as the water is so high it is up to the breaker rocks. As the home next door has no breaker rocks and we own both, we encourage sharing waterfront. The home you were at has the boats used by both cottages. You are welcome to enter the water on their beach which has a better entrance. In fact the lot just past them is public and another good place to enter the water. I regret that we did not explain this more clearly. The beachfront is generally shared making it easier to access.
