About Mill Race House

I live and work in London but I know and love Ireland from my childhood. It has always been a special place for me and I am glad to still have this house to make this connection with the country strong.

Mill Race House purchased this cottage in 1990

Why Mill Race House chose Rusheenaniska

This was my grandmothers house and it is very dear to me, I am renting it so that it stays in the family. I hope that it brings as much joy to you as much as it does me.

What makes this cottage unique

The magnificent thing about this house is you feel completely closed of from the world and totally at piece, however you are mere metres from the lively little town of Durrus. It is very comfortable and has a warm feel to it and there are plenty of great bars nearby so if you fancy ducking out of the quiet life it is easily done!

Do not rent this house. I never write reviews, but in this case I must warn others. I have visited Cork many times and I have no complaint with the people or the place. And while this property may have been fine in the past, it is now in very poor condition. This is NOT a Calm Irish Grandmother's Cottage, as advertised. It is in fact a big, cold, damp, party house meant for large groups. Basic expectations for VRBO properties were not met. The house (it is NOT a cottage) reeks of serious mould. The house is FREEZING cold. The heating policy is: 20Euros buys you ONE hour of heating per day! If you ask for heat - you are offered hot water bottles. The house does not overlook a garden, as shown in the photos; instead, you are looking at a creepy, cracked, white marble courtyard covered in moss and green slime, with broken lawn furniture strewn around. Inside, the decor is ugly and dated. The layout is bizarre, awkward, with the showers upstairs. The furniture is covered in white draperies (presumably to protect from the party people). A big pale brown leather sofa dominates the living room. The bedding is polyester. Think threadbare 70s party house. It is obvious that this place is, of late, geared more towards party people and is definitely unsuitable for: small quiet families or couples. You definitely do not want to stay here by yourself. A few hours after I checked in, the house was still freezing, and I realized that the heating would never come on. My eyes were stinging from the mould odour. Spiders/cobwebs in the corners, and insects on the curtains - was the final straw. I had to leave, and luckily I got the last room at a local hotel. I emailed the owner right away to tell him I had to leave, and why. The owner (who lives in London) sent me a reply: "This is not a hotel and was never advertised as such." I was also repeatedly told that "he didn't know when I was coming or they would have had the place ready." In fact I emailed the day before to inform exactly the time I would arrive.

My request for a refund was denied. I lost the entire amount for the week's stay. Still, it was worth it just to get out of there! I would not go back to this house. Just got a really bad feeling from the place.

I have stayed in VRBO rental homes all over the world, for many years. This is my first bad experience.

Lovely spacious cottage

  • 4 of 5

Great location for walking the Sheep's Head Trail. 200 year old year old cottage had had the fire lit before we arrived but it was still cold and damp. By the third day it had warmed up, but Ireland in March ...! Kitchen extremely well equipped, linen and towels good, no hair drier. Loads of space, chairs, cutlery, crockery etc. 3 pubs very close, local shop. Great play space for children. Emer, who looked after the cottage was very friendly and helpful.

Charming, large, clean house near village, walks and larger town on Sheep's Head

  • 4 of 5

We stayed in this house with another couple and two children. It's large and very clean. Really lovely kitchen for cooking and enjoying evening meals. Lovely big sitting room with comfortable couches and open fire. TV with channels and DVDs provided. Bedrooms and bathrooms were large. Lots of towels and clean bed linen provided. Back garden is enclosed, great for kids and just off the kitchen so great for spending time outdoors. Durrus had a couple of pubs and a good shop to get supplies but Bantry isn't far for more restaurants and a supermarket. Very near to lots of walks on Sheep's Head and lots of small villages with nice restaurants. One day was extremely wet and the house feels a bit cold and damp in that weather but Eimear had left us fuel for the open fire which was lovely. Would really recommend this as a summer rental and really enjoyed our stay.

Plenty of room for family, charming, relaxing.

Tons of room to spread out! House is not modern fancy, but charming, as is the private large garden area. If you're a cook, you'll love the kitchen. Not a lot of choices of restaurants in Durrus but you're only 7 miles from Bantry, which is cute, small town with plenty of choices. The lady who takes care of house is sweet, friendly, and knowledgeable about all sorts of things to do in the area. She is available if you need her for anything but leaves you to your privacy. We loved the break from the touristy big cities.

charming quaint old cottage cosy but with all modern amenities nestled in the idyllic area of Durrus

  • 5 of 5

Charming old cottage that offers the taste of quaint old Ireland. Very comfortable, clean and bright full of quaint antiquities and an amazing library. Fabulous kitchen if you love to cook and satellite tv if you can't live without your sports! Brilliant location that offers privacy and tranquillity yet close to neighboring towns like Bantry. Ideal to use as a base to explore around Cork and Killarney.

We loved our stay there and would love to return again.

The small town of Durrus has to offer restaurants, bars, scenic walks in local countryside, Irish charm and hospitality, live music, and the many bays within a ten to twenty minute walk.

You are a ten minute drive from Bantry which can offer sea fishing, golf, a wider selection of bars, music and restaurants. There is also a charming market in the market square and many historical sights such as Bantry House.

There are further attractions throughout the county such as Blarney castle and the famous Blarney Stone. The English Market in Cork city and the many museums within the Capitol. The fantastic live music in Clonakility and it's market. Kinsale town has a wide variety of excellent restaurants and the harbour port has a number of entertaining distractions.

Or it is easy to relax and stay in the local area and drink well and eat good food. Whatever it is you are looking for we are happy to advise and offer our insights.
