A More Peaceful Time and Place

  • 5 of 5

Very Charming Huge House! Mr Boyd the care taker was very helpful and cheerful, a great guy. The house sits a few yards from the river and makes any cares you may come with melt away. The house is so well equipped with pots, pans, utensils, spices, games, candles, towels, great beds that you need bring nothing but food and drink. They have bikes, fishing equipment, crab traps,BBQ grill, kayaks and more for your outside enjoyment. My favorite spot in the house was the Hugh screened in porch, we ate almost every meal there. The rooms are Hugh but the bathrooms are a bit small. The house sits on property away from most things. Getting somewhere takes longer than you expect but there is so much to do we stayed there mainly and relaxed. Being there I was able to see areas of Virginia I never have seen. The state park down the road is beautiful. We enjoyed the place and would recommend it to everyone, it would be a wonderful place for family reunions or a great place to bond with your kids.

Very Nice House

  • 5 of 5

A very nice old house approximately 100 years old with a gracious owner. We will definitely consider going back if we have a large group as we did this time.

Our first visit to this location for a week of sailing absolutely beautiful location. View of river stunning. Sailing access amazing. House is positively stunning!! Nelson property overseer unobtrusive and answered all our questions and addressed any of our needs immediately. The house is charming charming charming!! 6 adults had a perfect stay. And the use of the kayaks was sooooo much fun. First experience for all of us. We had such an awesome time we have already booked again next year. The house and property is a perfect spot for relaxing, swimming and most of all sailing. Thanks for a great place to spend time with family and friends!

Tranquil, Beautiful and Spacious!

  • 5 of 5

We were a total of four adults and two nine year old boys.

The house and property were perfect for a relaxing vacation away from the metro DC area. The house is old and basically a colonial reproduction, and because of this, it is very charming. It is very large -- a bit too large for our group of six, really - but we enjoyed not being on top of each other and having the space to do our own thing when we wanted to.

There were four kayaks with a multitude of life jackets (adult and kid sizes), a couple of bikes, and some lawn games (e.g. croquet). We were out on the river every day -- swimming, fishing and/or kayaking -- and the river is close enough to the Bay/ocean, that there are tides, which is nice because it keeps the water moving. The river is not fast moving or deep (for those with little ones).

There was a charcoal grill, a hammock, and several Adirondack style chairs on the lawn that were perfect for enjoying "sundowners" and quiet views of the sunset and aquatic/bird life. There is not much in the immediate vicinity of the house, but a 20-minute or so drive got you to what you needed (shops, supermarket, restaurants, etc). We quite liked how remote it was. While there are neighbors, the landscaping and size of the lot, make it seem like you were alone out there.

No need to bring towels -- beach or bathroom -- as the house has an abundance. The beds, sheets, pillows, are all comfortable. There is a dish washer, washer/dryer, and all of the silverware, glasses, serving plates, etc, that you could possibly need while on vacation.

While we were there, there was a heat wave. The downstairs is cooled by central air, and the upstairs bedrooms are cooled by window units, which worked fine for us.

There is a caretake for the house -- Nelson -- who was at the house several times throughout our week's rental. Normally, this would be a big negative to me, but he is a really, really nice guy, and the house and grounds are so big, that it was not an intrusion at all.

The only negative is that the house is getting a bit run down and could use a bit of updating. Nelson keeps it all in good working order, but it seems like it hasn't had any major investments in quite a while.

Overall, though, it really was a wonderful and relaxing vacation, and I recommend the property to others who just want to get away from it all, spend some real quality time with family and friends, and do lots of fun stuff outside.
